A very cool tune I stumbled upon this morning by British DJ/Producer Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. It’s a bit of a peculiar namesake one has to admit, but I was willing to look past that and peep the majority of this lad’s work, which is, for the most part, pretty forward-thinking. I’d heard his debut EP, as well as the odd remix pop up here and there throughout the summer, including his renditions of Wafa and Sky Ferreira, but this EP brought something a bit more complete to the table.
The tune Waulking Song opens up with a nice elastic house groove, slowly developing into something noticeably more tribal than you thought you were getting into. The foreign vocal is absolutely flawless, cut and pitched perfectly; one of the best I’ve heard in a hot minute. But, just when you’d expect a classic tribal/dutch breakdown, you get something totally unexpected, something much more conserved and soothing. It’s not a trance breakdown, but I’d liken it to the trance element you often find in the dubstep work of Nero and/or Martyn. Regardless of how you’d classify it, it’s really fresh in this application, and once the groove is layered on top, there’s something super catchy about this track.
