JOT5

January 17, 2012

Today marks the notable release of the JOT5 EP, on A-Trak’s renowned Fools Gold record label, for the Toronto-based duo of DJ Booth & Chameleonic aka Jokers of the Scene. Cleverly delivering on the prophetic number five which graces the EP title, this pentagon of production does well to explore the very broad terrain of dance music — no track more indicative of this than “In Order to Trance”. Touching on some really convincing techno to begin the eight and a half minute voyage, the piece proceeds with a series of delicate ambient notes, only to be shattered by shredding electro-esque distortion, resounding cymbals & “hoo-hah’s” from the one and only Lyn Collins. A real coalescence of musical style that comes together quite seamlessly, a theme pervasive throughout the entire release, with harder vestiges by way of “Black Mountie”, alongside epic low-bpm vestiges in “Killing Jokes II”.

All in all, nothing too ground-breaking here to be fair, but the JOT5 record is a thoughtful and well-produced number from a pair that have certainly withstood the test of time, improving & evolving in a punctual fashion. Sure, their moniker isn’t mysterious and/or understated, nor is their label astonishingly sexy, but these renowned purveyors of conscious techno make good on some quality dance music, emblematic of some of their most iconic peers.

Platinum

January 12, 2012

Two of this page’s most seasoned veterans, in Poupon & Prince Club return, this time in a collaborative capacity, on the silver jubilee release for Riva Star’s Snatch Records. A solid triumvirate of tech house production showcasing some well-balanced, cleverly-conceived grooves & an unmistakable appearance by Christopher Wallace aka The Black Frank White aka Biggie Smalls. The EP includes two collective efforts, entitled Platinum and La Nuit, as well as one solo effort by the Montreal-duo alone, entitled Everybody. The release marks a big win for the Toronto-based Faceless Management, the first of many exciting prospects in 2012, including releases by Urulu, forthcoming on Exploited, in addition to Meech’s much anticipated I Want extended-player, coming out on Demento Mori.

Immunity

January 11, 2012

The fifth release off of London-based imprint, Orca, (released earlier this week) features Toronto-native, XI. Two tracks showcasing the broad scope of garage music, and XI’s malleable, dynamic approach production. We’ve had the pleasure of catching him play a number of times, whether it’s funky, d&b, whatever really, it’s always conscious, and always educational. Yet another concrete example of Toronto’s sparkling start to 2012.

Anxiety

January 9, 2012

Today, the sinister, brooding techno textures posited by our good friend Gaunt have officially become embossed on the Divided Recordings catalogue. Such a natural fit for the monicker put forth by homegrown DJ/producer Brandon Sprouse, joining lofty artists like Linda Swallow & Memnock, among others, on this Italian imprint founded in 2010 by Stephan Barnem and Johnny Aemkel. Needless to say, a splendid start to 2012 for our dear city’s techno contingent; one that easily garners our stamp of approval. Do your part and support the release exclusively through Beatport.

Air Jamaica

January 5, 2012

As you might have noticed, we were a tad busy earlier this week, putting together those tiresome top-20 lists, so we unfortunately had to neglect a rather important announcement from the Get Flavor Records camp. Indeed, this past Tuesday, our good friend Todd Douglas aka Meati released his long-anticipated Air Jamaica EP, one that we’ve been squawking about for quite some time now, probably ever since we played it on etoLIVE, way way back. The EP comes loaded with remix support from John Roman, Ardalan, and several others. Needless to say, it’s been a busy couple months for Meati, fresh off his mix for AO-AO, not to mention some exciting new material with Deebs, and now this, so do your thing, and support the full thing right here.

WGW

January 4, 2012

This could possibly be the quietest weekend we’ve ever seen this city serve up, and for that reason we’re not even entertaining the option of listing the events in our conventional WGW fashion, simply because they are literally non-existent. That’s not to say the clubs aren’t open, it’s just none of them are dishing what we necessarily want to be consuming, and if anyone has an issue with it, feel free to hit us up. There is however a cool little jam-ting going down at Wrongbar on Saturday, the always reliable sweat-box that is Slowed, featuring the likes of Torro Torro and crew. Aside from that, if you’re just looking to bro out, The Hoxton is your best bet.

TOP 20 LABELs

January 3, 2012

Ah yes, finally the last chapter of our 2011 review series is among us, the top-20 record labels in electronic music. Definitely the tightest race we’ve had to call in the three years we’ve been doing this, but I think we nailed it. Again for the sake of historical reference, we would encourage you to check out our top label lists from 2009 & 2010, just so you can see how our taste, and the industry itself, have both evolved.

20 | [NAKED LUNCH]

Est: 2008
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 4
Notable Artists: Kevin McPhee, Instra:Mental, Boddika, Jon Convex, Kowton, Scuba, TRG
Website

When you convert on your four releases with grades that are easily 90 points out of 100, you have the honour of making this list. Incredible efforts by the likes of local kid Kevin McPhee, and you know, a couple other dudes who may or may not have heard of.

19 | 100% SILK

Est: 2011
Headquarters: New York City
# of 2011 Releases: 15 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Ital, The Deeep, Maria Minerva, Gillette, Cuticle, Sir Stephen
Website

What an incredible job by this vinyl-producing operation that literally burst on to the scene just this year. Defined by innovation and having no musical boundaries, this is an imprint that you should definitely keep a pulse on for 2012 and beyond.

18 | SOUND PELLEGRINO

Est: 2009
Headquarters: Paris
# of 2011 Releases: 11
Notable Artists: Noob, High Powered Boys, TWR72, Joakim, Bambounou, Bok Bok, Tom Trago
Website

Look who’s back, back again. After being neglected in our ranks last year, and being crowned #1 the year before, our loving relationship with Sound Pellegrino is once again among green pastures. A truly startling list of dance music releases, of which we fully endorse.

17 | HOT CREATIONS

Est: 2010
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 10
Notable Artists: Lee Foss, Jamie Jones, Danny Dayz, Robert James, Hot Natured
Website

One of our most highly rated labels of last year is back in a much less authoritative position, not because of a specific decrease in quality or quantity, rather, there is simply only so much deep house you can create before the concept starts to lose its varnish and nostalgia.

16 | VISIONQUEST

Est: 2011
Headquarters: Berlin
# of 2011 Releases: 9
Notable Artists: Visionquest, Seth Troxler, My Favorite Robot, Benoit & Sergio, Lee Curtis
Website

A new outlet for yet another serving of well-produced and admirably conceived house music. Efforts by Benoit & Sergio, MFR, alongside Lee Curtis and the Visionquest crew were all extremely impressive. How long will this deep sound last though?

15 | 3024

Est: 2007
Headquarters: Berlin
# of 2011 Releases: 5
Notable Artists: Martyn, Julio Bashmore, Jon Convex, Addison Groove, Mosca, Instra:Mental
Website

In much the same way that [Naked Lunch] converted on four outta four of their EPs, Martyn’s 3024 one upped them and managed to convert on five outta five. Each of the releases here all grade out admirably, with Jon Convex being the particular crown jewel that sweeped us off our feet.

14 | RUNNING BACK

Est: 2002
Headquarters: Berlin
# of 2011 Releases: 12 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Todd Terje, Tiger & Woods, Suzanne Kraft, Redshape, Disco Nihilist
Website

Running Back is to disco, as biblical scripture is to Catholicism. A label that boasts the most talented names in proper disco and disco house, including, but not limited to, the incredible releases by Todd Terje, as well as Tiger & Woods, both of which made our EP and LP lists respectively.

13 | AUS

Est: 2006
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 5
Notable Artists: Scuba, George FitzGerald, Midland, Cottam, Lee Jones, Ramadanman
Website

Yet another small operation with unquantifiable ambitions. Five releases that could easily make up a year end chart of their own, with personal favorite producers across the board. Each of these 5 EPs would make our top 50 with ease.

12 | INERTIA

Est: 2011
Headquarters: Amsterdam
# of 2011 Releases: 4
Notable Artists: Lucy, Mike Dehnert, Skudge, Sigha, Cosmin TRG, Area Fourty_One
Website

So-what if this Delsin sublabel only released extended-play compilations. Their arrival was one of the biggest techno storylines of the year, offering a dearth of playable material ideal for the 3am to 6am range. Massive names across the board on all four releases, we can only pray that this bountiful oasis continues.

11 | SWAMP81

Est: 2009
Headquarters: Brixton
# of 2011 Releases: 8
Notable Artists: Joy O, Boddika, Addison Groove, FaltyDL, Pinch
Website

South London’s badboy label embodies so much hip UK tradition, it hurts. No other label in the world understands the role, attitude, demeanor and particular components of dubstep more than these gentlemen. Needless to say, an imprint to look out for in 2012 and beyond.

10 | PLANET MU

Est: 1995
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 25 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Machinedrum, Kuedo, FaltyDL, Boxcutter, Chrissy Murderbot
Website

With the FaltyDL album garnering all the attention here, it’s easy to overlook other albums by the likes of Machinedrum, Kuedo, that were on the very cusp of making our list. For argument sake, both would be in included in our top-30, had we invested the time to expand the list.

09 | R&S

Est: 1989
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 14 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Blawan, Space Dimension Controller, Pariah, James Blake, The Chain
Website

One of London’s most historic imprints, originating in Belgium. Perhaps the most nose-in-the-air talent rosters of all the labels on this list, but you shouldn’t hate them for it. There is no denying the talent of the monickers outlined above, and the 2012 releases lined-up will result in an inevitable bump for next year.

08 | CROSSTOWN REBELS

Est: 2003
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 24 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Maceo Plex, Damian Lazarus, Mathew Jonson, Art Department, Jamie Jones
Website

The Prime Meridian of deep house, celebrating the release of the Art Department and Maceo Plex albums, among several others. This is the standard which all other house music is held to at the moment, just not completely sure if that’s a good thing or not.

07 | TURBO

Est: 1998
Headquarters: Montreal
# of 2011 Releases: 30 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Tiga, Terence Fixmer, Gesaffeslstein, Sei A, ZZT, Azari & III, Borderline
Website

A bit of slip here for our comrades to the northeast whom, as you’ll recall, reigned atop our label ranks in 2010. The albums by ZZT  and Azari & III were home-runs, and the birth of Twin Turbo was a notable storyline as well. Guaranteed, 2012 will see a return to the top-three.

06 | NONPLUS+

Est: 2009
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 18
Notable Artists: Instra:Mental, Boddika, Jon Convex, Actress, Kassem Mosse
Website

The label run by Alex Green and Damon Kirkham, better known as the dynamic duo of Instra:mental admittedly have a pretty decent talent base to start off with, releasing one of the years most memorable albums in Resolution 653, and a number of top-class EPs as well.

05 | 50 WEAPONS

Est: 2006
Headquarters: Berlin
# of 2010 Releases: 16 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Cosmin TRG, Dark Sky, Marcel Dettmann, Phon.o, Anstam
Website

Rounding out the top-five with one of the most relevant names in techno, and experimental techno bordering dubstep. When you look back at each of the EPs on this list, there is no identifiable weakness or soft spot, just quality across the entire board.

04 | OSTGUT TON

Est: 2005
Headquarters: Berlin
# of 2011 Releases: 17 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Marcel Dettmann, Steffi, Planetary Assault Systems, Nick Hoppner
Website

Probably the most consistent techno juggernaut of the past half-decade, this Berghain affiliated institution has the benefit of attaching itself to a pipeline of talent, which comes by way of the Panorama Bar residents. Steffi’s album was a masterpiece that JUST missed our top 20.

03 | STROBOSCOPIC ARTEFACTS

Est: 2009
Headquarters: Berlin
# of 2011 Releases: 12 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Xhin, Lucy, Perc, Pfirter, Ercolino, Dadub
Website

Every year there’s one label that we develop an inseparable, call it amorous, connection with, and this year it was easily the Berlin-based techno stronghold known as Stroboscopic Artefacts. Both Xhin & Lucy’s ablums were dark delights, and the docket of EPs were spell-binding.

02 | HOTFLUSH

Est: 2003
Headquarters: London
# of 2011 Releases: 21 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Scuba, Joy O, Sigha, George FitzGerald, Sepalcure, Braille, Roska
Website

Featuring one of the most star-studded casts in the business, Hotflush is now a perennial giant regardless of sub-genre, releasing some of the finest extended-players in the industry, two of which (Scuba’s Adrenaline & George FitzGerald’s Shackled) made our top-20 in stylish fashion.

01 | RUSH HOUR

Est: 1999
Headquarters: Amsterdam
# of 2011 Releases: 39 (+/-)
Notable Artists: Cosmin TRG, Lando Kal, Braille, BNJMN, Tom Trago, Virgo Four
Website

Boasting the top-rated EP in our humble ranks, Cosmin’s A Universal Crash, as well as number of highly rated albums and extended players, Rush Hour was able to stave off the contenders in one of the closest calls we’ve ever had to make for top label assessment. The BNJMN, Tom Trago, and Virgo Four releases put them over the top.

TOP 20 LPs

January 2, 2012

Selecting the premier long-play records of the year may typically be a less tiresome task than the extended-play records, for the mere fact that there are probably one tenth the number of releases to consider, but as we’ve been saying all year, there were truly a ridiculous number of top-tier albums in 2011. Forevermore, as much as this pains us, we must note that a narrower focus was necessary here. As much as we would have loved to include the James Blake album, or the Nico Jaar album, there was simply not enough room to open up the boundaries so broadly. Thus, the term electronic, had to serve a much more obedient and resolute purpose for us in this area. For a look at our assessments from 2010 & 2009, click here & here respectively. Here we go:

20 | THROUGH THE GREEN

Artist: Tiger & Woods
Label: Running Back
Release Date: June 2011
Cat #: RBCD02
Purchase

Much like what the Terje record did for the EP charts, this T&W album brought much of the finest that disco had to offer to our long-player ranks. No surprise then that German imprint Running Back was the institution that put it forward.

19 | USA

Artist: Surkin
Label: Marble
Release Date: November 2011
Cat #: 19888
Purchase

Don’t let the snob deep inside you forget that this album ultimately represents an entire era of mid-2000 French dance music. It’s not especially trendy or chic, but at the end of the day, this album stands as a gorgeous collection of seamlessly produced tracks from a golden age.

18 | IRIS

Artist: Tom Trago
Label: Rush Hour
Release Date: April 2011
Cat #: RH114CD
Purchase

Yet another gleaming example of how the gentlemen holding down the fort at Rush Hour are working overtime. Dutchman Tom Trago really turned it on in 2011, and nothing was more impressive than this here album, specifically the tune “What You Do”, an easy bet for top-10 track consideration in 2011.

17 | BIBLE EYES

Artist: Egyptrixx
Label: Night Slugs
Release Date: March 2011
Cat #: NSLP001
Purchase

A major step forward for Toronto’s own David Psutka who offers this contribution to London-based imprint, Night Slugs, as his sophomore full length. Ten tracks that come correct from start to finish, proving yet again how talented our home-grown soldiers are.

16 | SYMETA

Artist: Byetone
Label: Raster Noton
Release Date: October 2011
Cat #: CDR130
Purchase

Maybe the biggest sleeper on this list, an album that we just couldn’t shake off our brain, or our playlists. Olaf Bender provides insight into some of the foundations of conventional dance music with a foray into distortion and minimal glitch. Don’t let unfamiliarity dissuade you here.

15 | NEON DREAMS

Artist: Lvis-1990
Label: PMR
Release Date: October 2011
Cat #: PMR005
Purchase

For an album that explicitly lent itself to the mainstream, this piece was still incredibly well produced and well thought-out. High-expectations were set out for this one when its release was announced back in July, and the final product never quite attained the greatness that it was apparently destined for.

14 | YOU STAND UNCERTAIN

Artist: FaltyDL
Label: Planet Mu
Release Date: March 2011
Cat #: 359608
Purchase

NYC-based Drew Lustman has the incredible gift of crafting nostalgic garage music that makes a habit of flirting with the flavours of Chicago house, rendering something warm and altogether meaningful. This effort for Planet Mu explores this relationship, leaving the listener with a rare, soulful variety of future.

13 | FEVER

Artist: 2562
Label: When In Doubt
Release Date: March 2011
Cat #: DOUBT001LP
Purchase

What a triumph for Dave Huismans, putting together a flawless collection of evolved dubstep, built around disco samples and foundational house groove, a piece which simultaneously served as the debut full-length for his own imprint When In Doubt.

12 | ESCAPISM

Artist: Conforce
Label: Delsin
Release Date: December 2011
Cat #: 90DSR
Purchase

Honestly speaking, I wasn’t particularly familiar with Conforce’s work before this album, but upon treking down the LP during some rigorous digging, I saw it was signed to Delsin, and the hopes were instantly sky-high. Needless to say, the willingness to approach all things from ambient to acid did not go unnoticed.

11 | THE MESSENGER

Artist: Planetary Assault Systems
Label: Ostgut Ton
Release Date: October 2011
Cat #: OSTGUTCD20DIGITAL
Purchase

What can you really say about techno visionary Luke Slater that hasn’t already been said either on this site, or any other. A techno purist’s wet dream who’s unremitting and unrelenting approach to bigroom Berghain muscle music is an under-appreciated artform.

10 | PASSED ME BY / WE STAY TOGETHER

Artist: Andy Stott
Label: Modern Love
Release Date: May 2011 / September 2011
Cat #: Love069 / Love072
Purchase / Purchase

Two albums within five months of eachother left us in a peculiar place with these Andy Stott records, so we hope you’ll understand that we felt obliged to group them together for convenience’s sake. Both crafted with a willingness to be exceptionally haunted, these albums have 7am written all over them.

09 | Phantom

Artist: Skudge
Label: Skudge Records
Release Date: April 2011
Cat #: SKUDGELP01
Purchase

This Swedish duo have mastered the sounds of cavernous warehouse techno, and it wouldn’t be for lack of trying, seeing as they release tracks like rabbits reproduce. Often amounting to beatless white noise nurtured by filters, echo and decay, this album introduces you to a world of subterranean, droned-out analogue brilliance.

08 | AZARI & III

Artist: Azari & III
Label: Turbo
Release Date: September 2011
Cat #: TURBOLP031
Purchase

What an album this ultimately turned out to be. A group born & raised on our own mean streets, who’s astronomical success was fueled by home-run single after home-run single. Sure this LP may technically date back to 2009, but neglecting it on this list would have been a travesty. Indigo remains one of my favorite tracks ever.

07 | SWORD

Artist: Xhin
Label: Stroboscopic Artefacts
Release Date: November 2011
Cat #: SACD002
Purchase

The precise recipe for uncharted darkness is not an easy one to achieve, let alone master, but the third album from Singapore’s own Xhin, on one of our favorite budding imprints, was easily this year’s most welcome surprise for techno enthusiasts. Often unintelligible by the average ear, this one takes more than one listen to comprehend.

06 | WE’RE NEW HERE

Artist: Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX
Label: XL
Release Date: January 2011
Cat #: XLYTLP517
Purchase

An improbable undertaking, to reshape the timeless work of Gil Scott-Heron into beautiful dubstep, but if there was ever anyone with the necessary understanding and musical grasp to do so, it would be Jamie xx. A startling marriage between classic blues and the seemingly infinite boundaries of UK bass.

05 | PARTYS OVER EARTH

Artist: ZZT
Label: Turbo
Release Date: November 2011
Cat #: TURBOCD033
Purchase

The renowned work of Zombie Nation & Tiga showcases an unmatched ability to shred analogue conventions into what can only be described as the most authentic rendition of proper electro available in the modern day. Sounds that literally ooze scalding hot energy, resulting in tracks that provoke uncontrollable dancefloor rioting.

04 | GHOST PEOPLE

Artist: Martyn
Label: Brainfeeder
Release Date: October 2011
Cat #: BF025
Purchase

Martyn delivers a flawless, yet blissfully chaotic treat from start to finish. This album may be the frontrunner for most versatile LP of the year, boasting a mastery of every conscionable avenue of electronic music production. If not for some timeless albums ahead, it would have had every right to sit atop this list.

03 | SIMULAT

Artist: Cosmin TRG
Label: 50 Weapons
Release Date: September 2011
Cat #: 50WEAPONS03CD
Beatport

What a year it’s been for the Berlin-based production chameleon, Cosmin TRG. If you tuned into our EP assessment from last day you would have seen his name perched atop the pedestal of our EP recognition, and he comes close with this full-length for 50Weapons.

02 | RESOLUTION 653

Artist: Instra:Mental
Label: NonPlus+
Release Date: April 2011
Cat #: NONPLUSCD003
Purchase

Perhaps the most storied electronic duo of 2011, Boddika & Jon Convex aka Instra:mental — if not for their accolades as individual producers (which are piling up like mounds of pirate treasure) then for this album that undeniably wrote the script for the most novel techno sound of the year.

01 | DEDICATION

Artist: Zomby
Label: 4AD
Release Date: July 2011
Cat #: CAD3119CD
Purchase

There it is, the biggest long-play title of the year. Perhaps the most outspoken and explicitly controversial figure in any music circle at the moment, Zomby, who’s identity remains void of any detail, showcases a willingness to break down the borders of dubstep and grime, only to provide something honest, and sincere.
