What’s Good Wednesday!?

September 1, 2010

Pictured above is an early 20th century photo of the Labour Day parade in Toronto. Fast forward, oh about one-hundred years, and society has found a couple more enticing ways to celebrate this statutory holiday. This weekend is summer’s final hurrah. An opportunity to go hard, for three, four or maybe even five days in succession. Most notably, Labour Day weekend is synonymous with the Guvernment’s super event, Labour of Love. Although this year’s line-up leaves much to be desired in our eyes, it still presents an opportunity for thousands of electronic music enthusiasts to congregate around good music, and explore the subterranean realm of synthetic drugs.  One more item of note, an absolute sizzler of a booking at Mod Club on Friday, when Fake Blood attempts to rekindle his dominance of the Toronto club scene.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

February 24, 2010

Simply put, our city has been on musical crack lately. Big time artists, from all branches of electronic music, have been flocking to our city’s finest establishments, resulting in some of the biggest parties in recent memory. This weekend is no different. It starts off big and wonky on Thursday, at The Social with 12th Planet and company. Next, on Friday, progressive/tech house legend D. Ramirez makes an appearance at This Is London.

Now Saturday, it deserves a paragraph of its own. With international sensation, Vitalic, set to hit up Wrongbar, you would think that would be enough — but no, not even. German techno royalty, Marc Romboy, will be throwing it down at FootWork, and local heroes Azari & III will be spinning at an underground warehouse near you (TBA). Enjoy everyone.

TRASH ft. Jokers of the Scene

The Headliner: electroTO Presents TRASH ft. Jokers of the Scene, Sat. @ Augusta House

Ladies and gents, the time has come. Ottawa’s Jokers of the Scene (of Fool’s Gold Records) will be gracing the Augusta House this Saturday, as a part of electroTO’s TRASH. With a long list of world-class tracks including their remixes of “Turbo” (by Burns) and “The Change-Up” (by Rob Threezy), as well as their original production “Baggy Bottom Boys” — JOTS is well equipped to put on one of the summer’s biggest nights yet. In case that’s not enough, myself, Trackson and Bordello will be hitting the decks earlier in the evening, so come check us out, and show love.

The Opener: 12th Planet, XI, Sek One, Zeds Dead, Fri. @ Wrongbar

Cody LeKush, James Forsythe and David King somehow always find a way to pack their bills, no matter where they throw a jam. Friday night at Wrongbar will be no different, with 12th Planet set to wreck the discotek, DUBSTEP style. As explained on the Wrongbar event page, “The British dubstep movement takes hold in LA thanks to 12th Planet and the events he aligns himself with; Smog, Media Contender, HARD, and his own club night Dubtroit [...] His wicked beats are off axis. His subsonic frequencies surround you in their own orbit. America’s first king of dubstep is ready for impact.”

The Opener: TapeDeckBros, Brake, Vaneska & Tricky Carrera, Fri. @ Supermarket

We always love boosting local talent that we’ve previously featured on this space, and the TapeDeckBros. are a prime example. We pushed their remix of the GoldenGirls track “Do The Criminal” a while back, and it was met with overwhelming support. The duo will be kept company by some of the Toronto electro scene’s top talents, listed above. With The Mansion in charge, the party should be pretty dope.

The Opener: DJ Maus, Fri. @ Nocturne

Well done by nocturne for their write-up. Have a look: “Making an impact on the international scene with her recent productions for Thoughtless Music, DJ Maus has been keeping dance floors moving through the cold Montreal winters for over ten years. Don’t miss this rare chance to catch her signature smooth mixing style and lush tech-house selections before she decamps to Europe!” Should be a very good show, at an equally solid venue.

Have fun kids,

The Vamp
