Mighty Ducks

by The Vamp on March 26, 2010

If you’ve been lurking the #WMC hashtag on Twitter, you may have been a tad befuddled by the sequence of Tweets bearing the name of super-diva “Barbra Streisand”. No, Ms. Streisand has not been frequenting the WMC festivites; however, when the A-Trak and Armand van Helden collabo of Duck Sauce appeared at the Fool’s Gold Records party for the first time ever, her spirit was present.

Basically, Duck Sauce’s newest track has been the talk of the festival, garnering attention from music heads of all backgrounds and preferences. The track is set to be titled “Barbra Streisand”, named after its incredible, yet puzzling, vocal hook. Our best guess is that the harmony throughout is a genius sample from a classic Streisand track (which we’re still searching for). The underlying formula is typical of Duck Sauce, but the result is truly astonishing — pushing the Fool’s Gold faithful over the edge last night. Stay tuned to this space for updates.

[Update: March 30, 2010]

Here’s a clip of Barbra Streisand passed on to us by one of our regulars, TurtleTosser — from the Fool’s Gold Label Jam. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE5Jk3Yf9IY

Eyes Will Roll

by The Vamp on October 19, 2009

A-Trak

In a world saturated by tech release after tech release, sometimes you have to take a step back and enjoy some soft-serve, pop-infused electro, and who better to provide the arrangement than DMC wonderboy Alain Macklovitc aka A-Trak.

The track in question is a Yeah Yeah Yeahs original by the name of “Heads Will Roll”.  A-Trak’s remix has all the makings of a frat party favorite, with slow-developing builds, semblances of a progressive trance synth, and a melodic vocal guiding the whole thing. Sure, it’s not something you’ll find in tech-heavy sets, but who are we to discriminate. A-Trak’s production quality is a thing of beauty, and we love the wide appeal of the track, so use this one to explain to your anti-electro friends that it isn’t so bad after all.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

time_festival

The Headliner: Embrace Presents Time Festival, Sat. @ Sound Academy

Talk about an event that need no sales pitch at all — the 2009 Time Festival, hosted by Embrace, at the Sound Academy. The bill is absolutely packed with world-class electro personalities, you can peep the event poster above if you don’t believe us. A-Trak, Mehdi, Felix Cartal, Don Rimini etc. etc. will all be spinning non-stop exclusives, showcasing their undeniable skills. Anyone who is anyone in the Toronto electronic scene will be in attendance Saturday, and we highly recommend you do yourself a favour and attend. We will be there in full force, tearing up the d-floor and providing you with the track ID play-by-play, on our trusty Twitter account, which you can check out right HERE.

The Opener: Congorock, Thurs. @ The Social

On any other weekend, a visit from the Italian-native Congorock would certainly be crowned the week’s glorified ‘Headliner’, but it just so happens that his appearance falls on the same weekend as TIME. Such is life. Regardless, The Social is the undisputed place to be on your Thursday night, and that has been verified by our good friend and Toronto promoter, Mr. Cody Lekush. We’ve kept a close eye on Congorock ever since his debut single “Runark”, we’ve watched him explode under the watchful eye of Bob Cornelius Rifo of the Bloody Beetroots, and we look forward to going buck with him on Thursday.

The Opener: Steve Porter & JELO, Fri. @ Footwork

The weekend’s final warm up for the TIME festival will showcase international house/techno dee-jay, Steve Porter, alongside Toronto-native JELO. The New York-born Porter dropped the album ‘Homegrown’ in 2005, a release that propelled him onto the global stage and contributed to DJ Times anointing him as one of “America’s Best DJs”. Meanwhile, JELO has ripped local events for years, and blew up after his widely regarded collabo with Deadmau5 entitled “The Reward Is Cheese” — again, a very solid bill.

Enjoy this weekend’s festivities everyone. It’s going to be wild.

The electro world has been waiting in eager anticipation as of late for the release of the aNYway/You’re Nasty from the collabo of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden entitled Duck Sauce. They’re set to release four tracks on Fool’s Gold in September but in the meanwhile they’ve dropped the extremely hyped aNYway and You’re Nasty on beatport as a gift to the world.

Word has it that the other two tracks are going to be more laid back and less bang-(ier?) than these two musical gems. Today we have You’re Nasty for you and while aNYway is also a dominant track and is also in our library it’s not our style to post two tracks especially not when it’s a whole EP. You’re Nasty’s vocal sample is infectious and feels so familiar that it’ll make you recall fond memories that you don’t even have. For once, we’ll keep this short and will instead let the duo themselves break it down for you in the video above.

Golden Gloves

We can count ourselves lucky for two reasons. First, we are lucky because home-grown electronic talent from the Toronto area is expanding far beyond the shadow cast by MSTRKRFT, and these DJ/Producers are making their names heard through their quality work. Second, we are lucky because these up-and-coming producers are willing to show love to independent blogs from the GTA, so that their fans can truly embrace their music.

There is no better example of this than Toronto’s own Golden Gloves– the duo of Benny Bumpdatsh*t! and Cowiebunga.  Though they come from diverse musical backgrounds, they have come together to create a dominant DJ/production team that has catapulted onto the electro scene.

It would seem that this duo have locked themselves in the studio as of late, and it has paid off large dividends. Here at ElectroTO, we’ve been blown away by GG’s collaboration with John Roman (posted a while back),  as well as their remix of Major Lazer’s “Hold The Line” (which might be the best of the batch so far). So you can imagine how excited we were to find their newest production Pick Up The Slack in our drop box today.

The track has been described as having a “Dutch house” feel, and we can honestly say we’re feeling it 100%. Simply put, the track is massive. The catchy harmony, the bouncy bassline, and the well-timed drops have all the makings of a d-floor smasher.

Also, you can check out GG at the Time Festival in Toronto on July 25th alongside Canadian talents like A-Trak, Felix Cartal, Barletta etc. We will be in attendance– losing our minds, of course. If you want to join us, check out the line up and grab tickets HERE. Without further adieu, straight from Golden Gloves, here it is:
