Aeroplane

Long have we been ambassadors for disco, and just as long have we been avid supporters of the now bifurcated Aeroplane duo. Vito is still operating about under the same illustrious namesake, and as we explained, Stephen Fasano took the highroad as The Magician. Both have been operating as the class of the genre, but if history has taught us anything, then we should know that it’s awfully difficult to compete with magic.

Such is the case today, as Kitsune have brought us the latest Magician project, this time in collaboration with Peter, more notably known as Yuksek. That’s correct, The Magician has proceeded to pair up with one of the most influential producers in France to revolutionize Balearic disco for the umpteenth time, an EP that spans three tracks, pulling no stylistic punches. The release, which goes by the Twist EP, comes at a very exciting time for Yuksek, having just recently released a full length album on Universal, Living on The Edge of Time.

On to the tracks now, and pause for a moment, imagine yourself drifting back about thirty years, when the only thing that mattered for music connoisseurs in Europe was Italo. The unmistakable synth-infused, digi-pop, disco sound has been revived in three unique fabrications under this duo, with two bouncy dancefloor gems, and one more easygoing arrangement clocking in closer to 110. My favorite of the bunch is Love In Rimini, packed with overbearing 80′s synth leads, melodic plick plocks, claps that resonate into tomorrow, and eventually an organ drop big enough for Wrigley Field.

Silicon Love

December 16, 2010

Me & Madonna by Black Strobe, has been one of my favorite tunes for a long time, close to two years to be exact. So I was caught off guard when earlier this month, French label Kitsune re-released the work with a collection of really nuschool remixes, by some really fresh producers. One of my favorites from the package is the rendition by the Parisian trio Jolie Cherie, adapting the piece into something much more chic, much more European. The sound is yet another example of the ultra trendy disco-electro-pop made so popular by heavy hitters like Aeroplane, The Magician, Villa, Mustang, C90s and Flight Facilities. Some easy listening on this bright Thursday afternoon.

Rekindling The Magic

September 1, 2010

Not too long back, we documented the tragic break-up of disco divas, Aeroplane. Indeed, the glamorous duo of Vito De Luca and Stephen Fasano have gone their separate ways, both embarking on solo projects, much in the same musical vein. Vito has effectively carried on the Aeroplane moniker, continuing the release of the now widely-celebrated monthly mixes, and various production under that banner. Stephen, on the other hand, briefly fell off our radar, before returning just recently, in a very big way — and this here, is the chief purpose of our rant tonight. Stephen Fasano can now be referred to as The Magician, his recently founded solo project.

First and foremost, the fundamentals remain the same, which is a good thing in our estimation, because both Vito and Stephen remain the unquestioned tastemakers and soundtesters for this very fragile ‘nu disco’ subgenre. To drift away from this expertise seems a bit counterintuitive. Alas, Stephen is still concentrated on the beautiful low-bpm groove that had us hooked just months ago, and he goes on to showcase his reaffirmed love for disco by giving us Magic Tape 2. The mix (which is quite obviously the second in this series) fuses the contemporary with the legendary, and even allows for some new wave indie to sneak into the lot as well. Refer to the tracklist below for all your music-nerd needs.

Much like the photo above, this weekend’s compilation of talent is sky-high, off the charts, or just “really good”. Perhaps the two events that have the most intrigue for us, would be the appearance of Aeroplane (Vito) @ Wrongbar on the Thursday night, and Zombie Disco Squad @ The Social on the Saturday night. Both of these bookings provide some really special international talent (the first of which is nu disco, and the latter, some of the finest gangster house), that don’t come around every weekend. Friday, be sure to take an opportunity to support a wide selection of local-talent jams going down at familiar venues like Mod Club, Wrongbar, Andy Poolhall, and the list goes on. Enjoy!

We Can’t Fly

June 30, 2010

Talk about a bitter-sweet post.

Yes, I’m ecstatic to be able to share with you the newest disco-house masterpiece by Aeroplane entitled “We Can’t Fly”, which will appear on the duo’s full length album (by that same name), set to drop on September 6th. However, this comes with a side of very unfortunate, and saddening news — the Belgian DJ/producing tandem have called it quits; they will be going their separate ways after a three year run. Stephen Fasano was reportedly the one who walked out, and Vito De Luca will proceed with the project on his own accord.

This news had floated around the web since mid-June, and we were honestly flabbergasted as to how it could be true given its peculiar timing. With a widely applauded 500th Essential Mix on BBC, a more-than-promising upcoming album, and an international cult-like following that is ever-growing, it just didn’t add up. Regardless, this is an incredible loss to the electronic music community, and time will only tell whether Vito can single-handedly steer the ship. For the moment, be sure to bask in one of the final works from this magical production duo, not only for nostalgia’s sake, but because it’s one of the most flawless summer tunes available right now, the Extended Drum Mix of “We Can’t Fly”.

Invisible Light

June 8, 2010

I’m not sure if it’s simply the warm weather, combined with extended periods of sun-exposure, or the fact that I haven’t been overly impressed with the deep sounds lately, either way, I’ve been pleasantly stuck in a low-bpm nudisco vacuum. To be honest, I think it all spawned about a month ago, with the release of the 500th BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix which featured Belgium’s nudisco aces, Aeroplane — but that is neither here, nor there.

To continue this funky & contagious trend, I’m reaching for a remix done by a dude who appeared in our Top-10 EP ranks for 2009, and who continues to impress us with each new mp3 file that makes its way to our itunes. German DJ/producer stalwart, Siriusmo has been a top-flight fixture in our musical rotation for quite some time now, and really broke out during the period of 2004-2006 with a series of  successful releases on Grand Petrol Recordings. Without getting too inquisitive or detailed, you could just say his style is indescribably unique, crossing all sorts of musical boundaries, and is oftentimes miles outside the box. Check out a slice of his most recent work below, and see if it tickles your fancy.

HARD Party

March 25, 2010

In just a couple of hours, this quaint aquatic paradise will host the widely-renowned Hard Pool Party, which will feature the likes of Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Busy P, Mehdi, Fake Blood, Aeroplane and too many more to mention. The glimmering venue pictured above is literally our next door neighbor, the ultra-chic Fontainebleau Hotel. Though the sun is well from full blaze, we’re looking at daytime highs in the twenty-eight degree range, with minimal cloud accumulation. Just in case you don’t believe us, peep a twitpic taken by Boys Noize Recordings artist Housemeister just moments ago.

Enough with the nostalgic scene illustration, let’s get to the latest work from the aforementioned Housemeister, and his track featured on the Miami Noize Sampler. The track is fittingly called Famous, as the stars have unquestionably come out this weekend. The track itself builds nicely, with a distinct arpeggiator throughout, climaxing with some psycho synths. (Also, don’t fret over the small meg size, the track is certainly 320kbps).

Drive Like You Disco

November 26, 2009

Testarossa Overdrive

You know it’s a great day in the world of electronic music when our homeboy Bordello provides us with an only-for-electroTO minimix. The montage is called “Drive Like You Disco” and is meant to provide the musical accompaniment to a fairly prolific (and well-documented) joy-ride/car-crash that went down on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, in 2006. Bordello’s mix is meant to parallel the events that happened on the night in question, where a Ferrari Enzo was left in ruins, and mafia involvement loomed.

01 KAVINSKY // Flashback [Record Makers]
02 DAS GLOW // Lite Brite (Strip Steve Remix) [Institubes]
03 DAFT PUNK // Da Funk [Virgin]
04 KAVINSKY // Grand Canyon [Record Makers]
05 SEBASTIEN TELLIER // Kilometer (Aeroplane “Italo 84″ Remix) [Record Makers]
06 BURNS // Heartbeats [2112 Records]
07 DAS GLOW // I Want To Wake Up With You [Vulture]
08 SIRIUSMO // High Together [Monkeytown]
09 STRIP STEVE // Point Break [Boys Noize]
10 FEADZ // Constant Ovulation [Ed Banger]
11 SHADOW DANCER // Drivetime [Boys Noize]

Running Time – 32:21
Quality – 192kbps
