Farewell Faktory

July 2, 2011

Tonight we bid farewell to one of the unquestioned staples of the Toronto electronic music scene, The Social’s Faktory Saturday; founded by booking visionaries Mike Scrimshaw & Ryan Burton. This weekly arrangement, which has gone steady for well over two years, rewrote the script on bringing conscious DJ/producers to the city, including folks like Untold, Soul Clap, Art Department, Damian Lazarus, Justin Martin, Douster, Teki Latex, Orgasmic, Roska, SBTRKT, Zombie Disco Squad, Camel, Round Table Knights, just to name a handful.

This evening, The Faktory will open its doors one more time to a number of influential local acts, including names like Brandon Sek, St. Mandrew, Nitin, and of course, our good friend Poupon. We’d encourage you to stop by, pay your respects, and rejoice in the wonderful memories that this nostalgic space has provided over the years. That being said, don’t dwell too long on The Social’s closing, as a completely new venue, tabbed The Hoxton, is set to open by summer’s end — ensuring that much of the same quality will continue to flow to our ears.

Greetings electroTO-nians, just a couple of house-keeping items that we have to convey before we get to the normal What’s Good Wednesday items. A huge batch of official eTO merchandise has just come in, so we’re fully stocked in all sizes ranging from extra-small to extra-large, and both classic black and classic white models. You can pick those up online, right HERE, and we suggest you do so! Now on to the pressing event details for this upcoming weekend. Perhaps the most notable item for this weekend, is the prolific return of the Bloody Beetroots — granted their act is quite a bit different from their good ‘ol DJ days. Apparently, they have metamorphed into a rock-band, so that should be interesting. Regardless, our pick of the weekend is Matthew Dear on Saturday at Wrongbar. Wrongbar’s talent finder deserves a raise; just sayin.

Art Attack

October 2, 2010

Tonight marks the arrival of Nuit Blanche here in Toronto, where different zones within the downtown core have been attributed a wide-range of artistic installations. However, this year, the only Art we’re interested in, is going down tonight at The Social — where Soul Clap will be in town, alongside Canadian DJ-duo Art Department. Resident Adviser does a tremendous job of laying out the pedigree of this duo, “Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house Legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star and No.19 label owner – Jonny White. As individuals both Kenny and Jonny have released countless critically acclaimed records and are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, revolutionary underground producers out of North America.”

The track Vampire Nightclub by Art Department is sort of a tease, for the mere fact that it isn’t the track entitled Without You, which is the one that has really caused a stir since WMC 2010. Regardless, that incredibly groovy downtempo bassline is still present, the slow mode arpeggiator and the low-pitched techno vocals are in full effect. Be sure to come out tonight for the real thing.

For our new readers…

What’s Good Wednesday!? (–proper noun) pronounced: whatsgoodwednesday
1. A very useful and reliable resource that proceeds to document Toronto’s electronic music events each and every weekend, 2. A weekly post that can be found exclusively on electroTO, 3. The highlight of many people’s Wednesday afternoon/evening.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

February 24, 2010

Simply put, our city has been on musical crack lately. Big time artists, from all branches of electronic music, have been flocking to our city’s finest establishments, resulting in some of the biggest parties in recent memory. This weekend is no different. It starts off big and wonky on Thursday, at The Social with 12th Planet and company. Next, on Friday, progressive/tech house legend D. Ramirez makes an appearance at This Is London.

Now Saturday, it deserves a paragraph of its own. With international sensation, Vitalic, set to hit up Wrongbar, you would think that would be enough — but no, not even. German techno royalty, Marc Romboy, will be throwing it down at FootWork, and local heroes Azari & III will be spinning at an underground warehouse near you (TBA). Enjoy everyone.

For the third weekend in a row, we’ve been blown away by the acts that are making their way through the Toronto nightclubs. For starters, Luca Bacchetti (Thursday), LA Riots (Friday) and John Dahlback (Saturday), make a pretty nice trio of headliners for the weekend. They also bring diverse sounds to the table, with Bacchetti doing his Techno thing, LA Riots bringing the finest in Electro House, and Dahlback busting out true Swedish Tech House.

In addition, exciting local acts, which include sets by Brandon Sek, Riviera, Y-Pro and many more, make your alternate options very very enticing. Enjoy everyone.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

September 30, 2009

I Love Annie

The Headliner: Annie Mac — Thurs. @ The Social

This Thursday, Toronto will welcome Annie Mac, the widely recognized host of a number of shows on BBC’s Radio 1. Her most notable show,  Annie Mac’s Mash Up,  “is renowned for playing an eclectic mix of new musical genres such as electro, dubstep, dnb, hip-hop, and disco.” In addition to her on-air accolades, Annie Mac has a reputation for throwing it down live. This will be crazy.

The Opener: Laidback Luke — Fri. @ Mod Club

With simply too many top-notch productions to mention, it is sufficient to say that this Friday Toronto will host one of the world’s top electro-house acts, Laidback Luke. His resume speaks for itself, and regardless of the fact that he was in town less than a year ago, you’d be silly to sleep on this one.

The Opener: Zombie Disco Squad — Sat. @ The Drake Underground

The weekend’s super-sleeper involves the Dirty Bird, Made to Play, and Sound Pellegrino breakthrough DJ/producers, Zombie Disco Squad. These guys are popping up all over the place, and that is music to our ears, as there is no denying the quality of their productions and live sets. Take advantage of the rare opportunity to check these guys in North America.

The Opener: Tommie Sunshine & Felix Cartal — Sat. @ London Music Hall

If it’s a roadtrip that you fiend, then you might as well make the two hour trek down to London, Ontario and check out the London Music Festival’s tent party.  It will be a star-studded affair with both Tommie Sunshine and Mr. Felix Cartal on the decks. Definitely worth a nauseating drive West on the 401 highway.

The Closer: Martyn — Sun. @ Wrongbar

“The man the dubstep scene has come to know simply as Martyn has been a drum & bass DJ in his native Holland for more than a decade (he even recently collaborated with Mancunian D&B king Marcus Intalex). Deykers grew up in Eindhoven, but eventually settled in Rotterdam (his record label, 3024, is named after his old zip code there), and his fingerprints are all over the Red Zone D&B club nights that were held throughout the country.” (Thanks xlr8r.com) Be sure to check out the city’s solution for dubstep, Wrongbar Sunday.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

Toronto International Film Festival

This week’s edition of What’s Good Wednesday!? is absolutely jammed packed with events in light of the Toronto International Film Festival. Because of the total log-jam of talent, we’re going to switch up this week’s format, and outline a headliner for each day this weekend — Thursday to Sunday. With headlining names like AC Slater, The Twelves and DJ Spun , this sporadic collection of events was the only feasible way to publicize the incredible electronic agenda that’s in-store for our city, in lieu of the TIFF festivities. In addition to the surge of musical talent, the majority of the host venues will be operating under extended (4am) bar licenses — every ravers dream. Enjoy, everybody.
