Friday evening is the people’s choice gala with everyone’s favorite ‘pa ‘pa Americano — errm — Yolanda Be Cool — lots of local radio-play foreshadows a fun-filled evening. Saturday is our pick of the litter, with House music’s cream of the crop Swiss duo, Round Table Knights at The Social for another dazzling edition of Faktory Saturday.  Other massive Saturday options include disco mastermind, The Magician (Wrongbar) and everyone’s favorite, Chromeo (Opera House).

Planet Turbo

September 28, 2010

“What we’re doing is like planting trees all over the world, but far more important.” – Tiga

Planet Turbo has transcended the notion of world-tour, it has gone beyond showcasing individual talent; moreover, it has served as a palpable reminder to all electronic music enthusiast that there is only room for one label in the top-drawer of our beloved genre. The purpose of this brief foray will be to catch you up on the recent going-ons down in Montreal, where the Turbo brain-trust are casually putting work before sleep, on a consistent basis.

Rewind back to April 29th, when Tiga and his goon-squad (which included the likes of Erol Alkan, Riton, Zombie Nation, Proxy & Thomas Von Party – no big deal, right?) stopped off in Rotterdam, Holland to kick off the first stop of their 2010 world tour. Needless to say, this event crippled the will of those in attendance, and sent some very meaningful shockwaves throughout the entire electronic aristocracy. Turbo was here to claim 2010 as their own, and from there, global metropolitan strongholds like Glasgow, London, Madrid, Sydney, Montreal, etc. were lined up like Jenga pieces in front of a wall of Marshall monitors (à la the Justice promo photo).

As you may, or may not know, Turbo was recently kind enough to release an entire EP showcasing some of the most well-received bombs of the Planet Turbo world tour. This can be purchased at the Turbo shop, available right HERE. There, you will also find some of the label’s latest releases including Azari & III’s Indigo EP, Boy 8-Bit’s Yard Birds EP, and the most recent, released today, Discosamurai’s Yes & No EP. In addition to these latest works, Turbo has provided you with three no-charge downloads via their Soundcloud account to prove to the consumer that they aren’t capitalist vampires (see below). Pay particular attention to the Deepgroove remix of Sei A, which could possibly be one of the best free tunes ever released.

This past September, Tiga James Sontag (Turbo Recordings bossman and honorary electroTO Yahweh) spun at The Guvernment’s yearly Labour of Love super-party, alongside notable figures such as D.I.M., AutoErotique and a long list of others. Needless to say, Tiga’s mixing mastery was on full display that evening, and reaffirmed our undying support.

One of the biggest crowd-pleasers on Tiga’s setlist that evening was a unique retooling of the industry-shaking track titled What You Need, which appeared on the album Ciao! (released early last year). As soon as the tune was clearly audible, there was little doubt as to who the remixing artists were — the dynamic Montreal duo of Dave 1 and P-Thugg, aka Chromeo. The result was (and still is) beautiful, as Chromeo add their classic harmonic vocal element to the composition, giving rise to something that sounds completely foreign to the original. This one has major mainstream appeal, so tell your friends.

Chromeo

Once in a while, a remix comes along where the remixing artist truly understands the dynamic of the original production, adapting each of the song’s key elements into something perfect. Siriusmo’s rendition of Chromeo’s “Night By Night” is one of these rare instances, and we’re happy to showcase this track for you here today.

This “Night By Night” remix dropped early last month, and has done nothing but pick up steam in the music community. In typical Chromeo fashion, the track is charming, and speaks of romance like only Dave and P-Thugg can. Now throw Siriusmo in the mix, a dude who is oft-cited as one of the most talented up-and-coming producers in the industry, and was cited as “producer of the year” by A-Trak. Check this one out — it’s soft, and gets you in all the right places.
