Crookers

With everyone and their mothers talking about the valiant return of the Crookers and the absolute shit-show set to go down at Sound Academy on Saturday, there are a number of notable acts that are flying under the radar. Take for example local kids Talal and Zoi (Dirtybird Records), two cousins who have absolutely mastered house music, playing on Thursday at Augusta House. Also, your Saturday evening includes sleepers such as Prince Language (The Social), as well as Azari & III (Wrongbar). Choose wisely my friends.

Tons Of Talent

March 8, 2010

The long awaited Crookers debut album Tons Of Friends is finally upon us and let us be the first to say that it’s actually quite good for a pop album. By no means are the Crookers selling out in this one – they’re simply applying their producing talent to a different sound. Yes it’s true that not all the tracks are particularly that good, but there are definitely a few that make up for that. The album is twenty tracks of collaborations with other artists (thus the name Tons of Friends) and each of the tracks caters to the genre of artist that is featured on the track. While the tunes featuring popular music stars such as Pitbull and Will.I.Am don’t really float our musical boat, there are others such as those featuring Tim Burgess, Porier & Face-T, Miike Snow and Yelle that are an exhibition of the duo’s diverse talent if nothing else.

The latter is probably our favorite and the one that we present to you today. Yelle is an extremely talented French vocalist whose original tracks gave way to tones of brilliant remixes and the collaboration with Crookers is simply beautiful. It just so damn French and so damn perfect. Cooler Couleur is the track of this album and while the DJs out there probably won’t be playing this out it’s bound to be a hit on your car stereo or at those poolside barbecues that are imminent as we come into spring.

We Love Animals

December 11, 2009

This is going to pop up everywhere on the internet but I just thought I would share the new Crookers ft. Soulwax and Mixhell called We Love Animals. This is a really cool track off the new Crookers album Tons of Friends that drops on March 8th of next year. It’s nice to hear the influence of so many talented producers in one track and the full version doesn’t really sound how I imagined it would after watching the videos of them opening with it at I Love Techno. Even though it’s not as big as I thought it would be, I’m excited for the album, especially if this song is any indication of what to expect. Listen to and download Crookers Ft. Soulwax & Mixhell – We Love Animals below.

Crookers

The Thanksgiving edition of What’s Good Wednesday gives us plenty to be thankful for in the world of electronic music. Peep the top-notch event list below, and be sure to enjoy the fruits of electronic labour, in addition to the heaps of turkey and stuffing. Much Love.

The Headliner: Crookers & Major Lazer — Sunday @ Guvernment

On my 13th birthday, my folks were gracious enough to plan a surprise party for me, where they invited a whole group of my closest friends, and we jammed out until about 11:30pm. When the Guvernment Nightclub turns 13 this upcoming Sunday, they too will invite their closest friends (all 5000 of them), and jam out — to both the Crookers, and Major Lazer — arguably the two biggest DJ duos in dance music today. This is an absolutely world class bill, an opportunity to see two of the most skilled tandems in the industry, and would be well worth the relatively steep investment.

The Opener: In Flagranti — Friday @ The Social

In a huge event that flew somewhat under the radar, The Social welcomes the New York City duo, In Flagranti, a personal favorite of us here at electroTO. Thanks to Night Track & Undiscovery for this — “The duo have recorded, remixed and edited some of the most fucked-up, amazing dance releases on their own Codek Records label, as well as DFA, Rong, Kitsune, RVNG, Mindless Boogie, and the list goes on and on. In Flagranti have just released their second album Brash & Vulgar which can only be described as an irreverent balance of disco, sex, dirt, distortion and tounge-in-cheek humor, all wrapped up in a gritty 70’s aesthetic.” — This is going to be massive.

The Opener: Rusko w/ Bombaman & More — Friday @ The Mod Club

Christopher Mercer aka Rusko, a production ace for Mad Decent, Downtown, Fabric, among many others will be featured in the latest installment of Arcade Friday’s at The Mod Club. Rusko has been described as, “Dr Dre, Timbaland and Switch all rolled into one with a serious overdose of bass.” Boom. Add to this, that there will be an afterparty at the Factory Loft, hosted by our good friends at The Factory — prepare to get slapped in the face with bass.

The Opener: Meech w/ Golden Gloves, Bordello & More — Sat. @ The Social

Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Mee-eeeech. Happy Birthday to you. How better to celebrate the day of birth of Mr. Michel Fournier, than by reaching The Social, and checking out some of the city’s finest talent. With our homies Bordello, Golden Gloves, and the man himself, all set to hit the decks — this one will get outta control in a hurry. Get there early to witness all the action.

The Opener: Barletta — Saturday @ Wrongbar

Thanks FAK for this — “Barletta’s latest EP, Whisper is coming out on Tremendous Records/Last Gang on September 29th as a Beatport Exclusive before it goes to the rest of the planet on Oct 20, 2009.” — Reach Wrongbar on your Saturday night for the exclusive drops from the man himself.

The Closer: Harvard Bass — Sunday @ Drake Underground

In our humble opinion, bearing in mind that the Crookers and Major Lazer are in town, this could well be the biggest event of the weekend. Harvard Bass, of the widely celebrated Sound Pellegrino Recording label will grace the Drake Underground, and treat the people to some of the most epic pieces of aural stimulation that we have heard in quite some time. The sheer quality of everything this dude touches is beyond remarkable, and we are giddy over the opportunity to see him live. Scour our blog for some sample work, as he has been featured on this space more than once.

Much Love and Happy TG,

Afrodisiac

August 7, 2009

Picture 4

Last night, we were jammin’ it up at Skybar nightclub, down at the Guvernment complex, where we had the pleasure of checking the Crookers live in action. The evening’s opener was none other than Mr. Nasty Nav, one of the GTA’s finest club owners, DJs, and all-around good dudes. As Nasty was doing his due diligence pumping up the bubbling Skybar crowd, one of his biggest drops was the track we have for you today — the Afrojack remix of Moombah.

The Dutch-born Afrojack has blown up since 2008, when the track “Drop Down” sent shockwaves through the electronic world. His remix of Moombah also appeared in Bordello’s July top-10 chart over a month ago, and since then we’ve been going bonkers over it. The track features some vintage snares and congas, in addition to a blaring synth that is undeniably rude.
