Trick or Remix

October 31, 2010

It only made sense that on the day of Halloween we would post a track by Mr. Florian Senfter aka Zombie Nation. It all worked out perfectly considering the aforementioned Mr. Senfter  just released a brand new EP on his very own UKW label, based out of Germany. But; our plans took a bit of detour when we heard the remix by DJ Mehdi.

The track in particular is titled Overshoot, and yes the Original Mix is tremendous, and it would have done wonders for a Zombie theme, but the rendition by Mehdi was just too good not to post. For me, it’s certainly one of the catchiest remixes I’ve heard in a hot minute, with an inspiring organ progression, and some of the heaviest drumming since John Bonham passed. So it all works out, we get the Zombie theme we anticipated and we manage to snag a remix from one of the top DJ’s in world –  everyone goes home happy.

À La Carte

May 14, 2010

The sudden collaboration of superstar solo DJ talent seems like the trendy thing to do nowadays, and one would only have to site the likes of ZZT (Zombie Nation & Tiga), Major Lazer (Diplo & Switch), Boys Noize & Erol Alkan, and Duck Sauce (A-Trak & Armand Van Helden), among a few others. Well, you can now add DJ Mehdi and Riton to this prestigious list — under the moniker Carte Blanche, and we couldn’t think of a more chic duo at this point in time.

Our love affair with Mehdi dates way back, but was set in stone this past March when we spent a number of hours in this suave frenchman’s presence during Miami’s Winter Music Conference. It was there that we were first introduced to Carte Blanche’s big single Gare Du Nord, specifically at the White Room during a jumbled triple team set by Brodinski, Mehdi and Busy P. Not surprisingly, the track went off like a firecracker and induced the crowd into some serious jacking. This doesn’t even account for the fact that the presence of Riton seemingly pushes this duo over the top, both in the production room and when they spin live.

Although we’re not giving out Gare Du Nord, we are dishing you another very fresh cut from Carte Blanche’s five-track Black Billionaires EP. The tune goes by Jigga Bite and stands alone for its contagious groove.

Whether it was Fontainebleau poolside at the HARD Pool Party, or under the cloth canopies of the White Room at the Annie Mac Presents jam — one of the unquestioned showstoppers thus far has been the back-to-back magic of DJ Mehdi and Louis Brodinski. Their groovy tribal house sympathies complemented each other perfectly, and had notable DJs like Diplo, Fake Blood, Annie Mac, Busy-P (and pretty much everyone) thrashing backstage.

The dynamic duo spun from 1am until about 5:30, so identifying one particular track that stole the show would be a trying task. One particular snake-charming house work-out that really caught our attention was a super slick collabo between DJ Gregory & Sidney Samson (much love to Louis for hitting the CD text button on the CDJ to ease our curiosity).  The track is called Dama S Salon, and is composed of all the essential parts — foreign (possibly Angolan Portuguese?) vocals, latin percussion, and an absolutely incredible build. Get it!

HARD Party

March 25, 2010

In just a couple of hours, this quaint aquatic paradise will host the widely-renowned Hard Pool Party, which will feature the likes of Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Busy P, Mehdi, Fake Blood, Aeroplane and too many more to mention. The glimmering venue pictured above is literally our next door neighbor, the ultra-chic Fontainebleau Hotel. Though the sun is well from full blaze, we’re looking at daytime highs in the twenty-eight degree range, with minimal cloud accumulation. Just in case you don’t believe us, peep a twitpic taken by Boys Noize Recordings artist Housemeister just moments ago.

Enough with the nostalgic scene illustration, let’s get to the latest work from the aforementioned Housemeister, and his track featured on the Miami Noize Sampler. The track is fittingly called Famous, as the stars have unquestionably come out this weekend. The track itself builds nicely, with a distinct arpeggiator throughout, climaxing with some psycho synths. (Also, don’t fret over the small meg size, the track is certainly 320kbps).

The Headliner: Embrace Presents Time Festival, Sat. @ Sound Academy

Talk about an event that need no sales pitch at all — the 2009 Time Festival, hosted by Embrace, at the Sound Academy. The bill is absolutely packed with world-class electro personalities, you can peep the event poster above if you don’t believe us. A-Trak, Mehdi, Felix Cartal, Don Rimini etc. etc. will all be spinning non-stop exclusives, showcasing their undeniable skills. Anyone who is anyone in the Toronto electronic scene will be in attendance Saturday, and we highly recommend you do yourself a favour and attend. We will be there in full force, tearing up the d-floor and providing you with the track ID play-by-play, on our trusty Twitter account, which you can check out right HERE.

The Opener: Congorock, Thurs. @ The Social

On any other weekend, a visit from the Italian-native Congorock would certainly be crowned the week’s glorified ‘Headliner’, but it just so happens that his appearance falls on the same weekend as TIME. Such is life. Regardless, The Social is the undisputed place to be on your Thursday night, and that has been verified by our good friend and Toronto promoter, Mr. Cody Lekush. We’ve kept a close eye on Congorock ever since his debut single “Runark”, we’ve watched him explode under the watchful eye of Bob Cornelius Rifo of the Bloody Beetroots, and we look forward to going buck with him on Thursday.

The Opener: Steve Porter & JELO, Fri. @ Footwork

The weekend’s final warm up for the TIME festival will showcase international house/techno dee-jay, Steve Porter, alongside Toronto-native JELO. The New York-born Porter dropped the album ‘Homegrown’ in 2005, a release that propelled him onto the global stage and contributed to DJ Times anointing him as one of “America’s Best DJs”. Meanwhile, JELO has ripped local events for years, and blew up after his widely regarded collabo with Deadmau5 entitled “The Reward Is Cheese” — again, a very solid bill.

Enjoy this weekend’s festivities everyone. It’s going to be wild.

Pine Soul

Boy 8-Bit

David Morris aka Boy 8-Bit first burst on the scene when he appeared on DJ Touche’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix back in 2004. On that day, Touche proceeded to drop the 8-Bit original entitled “The Colonel”, and things simply blew up from there. Fast-forward five years, and Boy 8-Bit’s resume includes a long list of Essential Mix appearances, a solid collection of original productions and a remix count around 40. Also, we should mention that 8-Bit has also held down lead guitar duties for the Black Ghosts, so sick.

Boy 8-Bit’s latest production-piece comes to us via the Baltic Pine EP. A diverse four track collection, that reminds us slightly of an enchanted fantasy-land soundtrack. The most uplifting and exhilerating track from this quartet is the track that takes the name of the EP, “Baltic Pine”. It has been said to have the same airy feel as Mehdi’s “Pocket Piano”, high praise indeed. This track that has all the makings of a summer classic — gentle, soulful and bright.
