What’s Good Wednesday!?

by The Vamp on September 1, 2010

Pictured above is an early 20th century photo of the Labour Day parade in Toronto. Fast forward, oh about one-hundred years, and society has found a couple more enticing ways to celebrate this statutory holiday. This weekend is summer’s final hurrah. An opportunity to go hard, for three, four or maybe even five days in succession. Most notably, Labour Day weekend is synonymous with the Guvernment’s super event, Labour of Love. Although this year’s line-up leaves much to be desired in our eyes, it still presents an opportunity for thousands of electronic music enthusiasts to congregate around good music, and explore the subterranean realm of synthetic drugs.  One more item of note, an absolute sizzler of a booking at Mod Club on Friday, when Fake Blood attempts to rekindle his dominance of the Toronto club scene.

I’m going to be honest. I didn’t really like Fix Your Accent the first time I heard it. In fact, it was my least favorite track on the EP. That was until Drop The Lime dropped it this weekend and I saw it in a different light. It played out completely differently than I imagined, and transformed a track that I was luke-warm on, just hours earlier.

The Fix Your Accent EP drops on September 1st and all three tracks aren’t exactly what you’d expect them to be, based on Fake Blood’s previous work, especially the disco work-out “I Think I Like It”, which is a favorite of both The Vamp and myself. It’s his first original production release since Mars last summer and it’s on track to have the same success.

While Mr. Theo Keating has made it well known that none of the tracks from his EP are blog safe, we did get something equally attractive from our boy Granton from the Aussie duo PSEUDO-LICIOUS (who’s massive track Panzershrek was featured here a while back). They sent us over their remix of the EP’s title track, and it’s proof that their remixes are just as strong as their originals.  The PL remix is a little toned down from the original version and isn’t as jumpy either. I’d say it’s more useful to get a crowd built up than to have them going bananas. The use of the vocal is nuts throughout the whole song, so that’s just a little something to keep you excited until the official drop which happens to be tomorrow. You can grab that EP here. Just for the record I love how it says that it was all produced by him in his flat.

Welcome to Amsterdam

by Bordello on July 17, 2009

About a month or so ago, Theo Keating, Mr. Fake Blood himself, graced Wrongbar with his presence and absolute, unadulterated mayhem ensued. I think anyone in attendance on that night won’t deny that it was the craziest they’ve ever seen it.

In any case, Mr. Blood threw down some real gems during his set, one of which is the feature of my maiden post to this glorious blog. The vocal in this song, “Welcome to Amsterdam”, was stuck in my head for weeks following, and so I asked the knowledgeable guys over at the Erol Alkan forum for some help. I was pleased to find out that our very own member RipTidE was actually the genius behind the remix for this track, and that he was graciously contacted by Mr. Blood for a copy to play in his sets. We’re glad he did. Here it is in full 320, but be sure to keep an eye on RipTidE’s future releases, because if they are as good as this one, you know this is a name you’ll be hearing about more often.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

Fake Blood @ Wrongbar

Today’s edition of WGW marks the beginning of the NXNE festival in Toronto, sensibly named after the compass quadrants “North By Northeast”.  This is essentially the Canadian version of the film/music/culture festival that takes place every year in Texas, by the name of SXSW. What does this mean for the electronic aficionados in the Toronto area? Well let me tell you, it has provided us with one of the strongest weekly event line-ups in recent memory.

The Headliner: Fake Blood, Nasty Nav and Barletta, Sat. @ Wrongbar

Fake Blood exploded on the scene the day Steve Aoki dropped his Essential Mix on BBC’s Radio One. On that day, Mars became much more than a red planet—it became the track of summer 2008. Then there was his Toronto appearance this past winter, where he absolutely blew the doors off of Wrongbar, and left resident DJ Nasty Nav playing his “Stuck On Repeat” remix for months. Yikes, with opening acts by Mr. Nav himself, as well as local-boy Barletta, Saturday will be off the hook, no questions asked.

The Opener: Bird Peterson, St. Mandrew and Guests, Thurs. @ The Social

NXNE’s high-power electro line-up kicks off with Bird Peterson at The Social, a venue which is infamous for its big-time sound system, in its not-so-big main room. Regardless, this doesn’t bode well for your eardrums, especially when Mr. Peterson drops his earth-shattering banger “The Essence”.  Peterson will be joined by the very skilled St. Mandrew, cousin of MSTRKRFT’s JFK. (Note: We incorrectly suggested that Bird Peterson was on the Dim Mak recording label– totally our bad– thanks for keeping us sharp)

The Opener: Klever, Fri. @ CiRCA

Friday night, CiRCA’s Randomland will feature Klever, a world-renowned scratch DJ from the United States who will make a point of opening his bag of tricks and shredding some serious vinyl throughout the night. Coming from a notorious hip-hop background in the mean streets of Atlanta, you can expect Klever to drop a diverse track arrangement with a Baskin Robbins-esque assortment of flavors.
