Today, it is with great pleasure that we are unveiling our third annual Producing For Presents charity EP, a yearly holiday initiative which enlists our most beloved local DJs to produce compositions of electronic dance music, and sell them in an attempt to raise money for a charitable cause. We crafted this idea way back in 2009, executed the project again in 2010, and here we are today, with arguably the strongest line-up yet. Like the two preceding years, all proceeds will be donated to the Heart House Hospice, a local charity which will ultimately use the donations to purchase Christmas presents for children in less fortunate circumstances.

Incredible and infinite thank yous must go out to our talented contributors including Max & Zach of Prince Club, Meech, John Roman, Todd & Will of Tsuka, Gold’N'Grams, Poupon, Gaunt, Colin Alexander, Vlsonn, and our two mysterious festive contributors, Sugarplum Fairies and Saddam Antler. Again your tireless work has paid immediate dividends, and we’re excited to see how much money we can raise this year, after coming within dollars of 1000 last year. Also, special shouts to the likes of Michel Fournier (Meech), Ben Rosenberg (Poupon) and John Roman, who have all contributed in P4P001 right through to P4P003 — endless gratitude for your donations.

For the third year in succession, Nasty Nav and the folks at Wrongbar have been kind enough to open their doors to us and host the annual EP release party on Saturday December 17th. The docket of artists looks more of a Toronto-based festival line-up rather than a one-off, but you certainly won’t see us complaining. Vouchers to download the EP will be made available on the night of the event, but we highly suggest you check out our Bandcamp page where you can purchase the entire collection for a minimum of $15 via PayPal. Your donation can be infinite.

International Affair

October 16, 2011

After a weekend of being charmed by the finest that the French capital had to offer, we must take a moment now to catch you up on some of the going-ons both domestically, and abroad.

To briefly recap things on our end, Saturday was a celebration of the highest order, as we bared witness to teen heartthrob Brodinski carrying out his residential duties at Paris’ Social Club; only this time, it was on the cusp of his FABRICLIVE60 release, which we warned you of a little while back. The night was an unquestioned success, with everything from the debuting of Brodi’s brand new line of merch, to the redeeming performance of TWR72, to the masterful display from the man himself — overseeing an overcapacity crowd, no less.

Even beyond our attendance, it was an explicitly Toronto affair Saturday evening, with intersecting Canadian themes unfolding and unwinding throughout. The most obvious of which, was the always bashful appearance of Rynecologist, who is actually set to play Social Club this upcoming Thursday for The CameRoscope, alongside Style of Eye and Jan Driver. Ryne has, and will continue to be touring Europe for the next two months, jumping back and forth between France & Germany, among other destinations.

BUT, Rynecologist surely isn’t the only Toronto-based EDM act making international moves at the moment, as Faceless Management folk Poupon & Meech have both announced fall European tours of their own. These two came up over and over in conversation as the evening progressed, with Poupon’s latest release on DubNoir again garnering playlist consideration from Brodinski, and the incessant buzz surrounding the Cooked Up Volume 4 mixtape as well.

It is also significant to mention that Turbo Recording friends Gingy & Bordello have a massive month ahead of them as well, with confirmed gigs at Social Club alongside Azari & III, as well as a confirmed closing slot at Fabric alongside Brodinski, Gesaffelstein and several others — that being the official FABRICLIVE60 release party. This of course will be on the heals of their Twin Turbo release set to drop in the coming days, which I’m sure you’ll hear more about relatively soon.

The Toronto takeover is on.

Brodi Acid

July 27, 2011

If you’ve paid any attention to anything we’ve said in the past two plus years, you would’ve certainly come to know Gingy & Bordello by now. With vapor still in the air, the local duo are ready to launch an all-out acid attack by way of Turbo Recordings. We’ll keep the majority of the details under wraps, but we can tell you that the anticipated release will likely be in September, with a fairly incredible surprise in store. Above, you’ll see Brodinski rinsing the track hard at the Monegros Desert Festival in Spain, as he’s been doing for many many months now.

Such a big weekend for local talent, it really makes us proud. Special attention has to go out to the budding new movement under the Futura banner, with an event going down Friday at Sneaky Dee’s. Another notable local act features a rare appearance by local kid Mix Chopin, of Solid Bump fame. Of course, who could forget our boy Rynecologist spinning with Etienne De Crecy at Wrongbar on Saturday, but the one that sorta takes the cake in our mind must be the appearance of Untold at The Social on Saturday — we saw this dude spin at Social Club Paris, and he single-handedly tore those multi-colored orbs off the ceiling.

Also, stay tuned after the show for a complete tracklist.

Bears & Friends

January 31, 2011

Today marks the release of The 2 Bears’ Curious Nature Remixes EP, which dropped on the always relevant Southern Fried Records. The release contains quality interpretations from the original tapes of the Curious Nature EP, and showcases the work of producers like T.E.E.D., Supabeatz, DJ Sneak, and most relevant to us, Toronto’s very own Gingy. This makes for some incredible timing, as it was announced just last week that Gingy and his partner in crime Bordello have be signed to Tiga’s own Turbo Recordings.

If you’re not totally familiar with The 2 Bears, let us attempt to explain this to you. The duo is made up of Mr. Joe Goddard and Raff Daddy Rundell, a relatively mysterious pair who make few public appearances, but have cloaked themselves in enormous teddy bear costumes for their press photos. They’ve gotten surprisingly little flack for this publicity stunt, especially Goddard, but that’s understandable, seeing as he is one half of the band Hot Chip, and also the bossman for budding EDM label Greco-Roman Music. Quite a small world this electronic music industry is, huh? Be sure to preview the groovy remix of Church that our good friend Gingy put together below, and if you like what you hear, click that little “buy the whole set” button.

Our New Era

January 30, 2011

This has been a fairly important forty-eight hours here at electroTO headquarters (major understatement). We’ve undergone significant changes right under your noses, and unless you proceed to sift through our massive back-catalog of posts, you may never know the true extent of these changes. At a basic level, all problematic mediafire links (from today all the way back to our humble beginnings) have been unceremoniously taken down. By problematic, we mean links that have previously provided tracks that are simultaneously being sold for profit by a record label. We’re happy to say that we have not been prompted to do this by any external authority; rather, we’ve always been firm believers in supporting labels, and at last, we’ve come to our senses to do this purge, completely on our own.

What does this mean? What does the future hold?  Will electroTO be music-less?

Absolutely not. Music will always and forever be at the forefront of our content/posts; however, instead of exploiting high-quality music from our most admired artists, we will be exploring different avenues to support the arrival of new music, while satisfying the consumer’s insatiable desire for the newest tracks and the latest releases. Whether it be strictly streaming new music on our page through our convenient new play/pause icon, whether it be linking to soundclouds, or whether it be dishing you tracks for download that have been explicitly given to us for the purpose of sharing — we will certainly find ways to numb your ears drums. Here’s a preview of how we will be hosting all new tracks for download.

One more item for discussion will be our renewed focus on the EDM talent in Toronto, and its surrounding areas. We have dozens of kids all on the verge of massive electronic projects on a global level, and we’re excited to be the news source that diligently tracks the progress and development of these local acts. Check below for some of the latest musical updates from some of our favorites.

Thanks for hearing us out here, and we’re very excited about the future.

Some would suggest that the weekend actually starts this evening at Wrongbar with Skrillex rolling into town, but we didn’t want to stray from our sleek three-day WGW format. Regardless, that one is well sold-out by now anyway, so those who know, know.  Now, on to the gigs that fall within our jurisdiction, which include some really world-class bookings. Thursday brings a rarity to the table, with techno giant Marc Houle of Minus playing at Cobra. Mr. Houle just released a widely celebrated album, so this is a perfect opportunity to appreciate, and celebrate. Friday the lofty standard continues as The Drake will welcome one of the UKs brightest names in techno, Mr. Matt Walsh of Turbo Recording fame. Finally Saturday, why not finish up with a legend, as Mr. John Dahlback will work his magic at Footwork.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

November 24, 2010

Really excited about this upcoming weekend, with a whole ton of options, options, options, dispersed evenly throughout all three evenings. Some very cool Canadian content kicks it all off on Thursday night at The Drake with The Mole, alongside fellow canucks Nacho Lovers. Look for the dark vibes here, with the finest in murky house and daunting techno. Friday introduces a whole ‘nother level with the likes of Tiga at the Mod Club, alongside techno’s black sheep, Fuhgahzi Bordello. Other Friday options include Sydney Blu and Shapeshifters. Saturday goes just as hard with Felix Cartal, Poupon and Gingy at The Faktory’s Saturday. Also, Nocturne will host the start of the Bully parties with the likes of Bombaman, Brandon Sek and a bunch more.
