What’s Good Wednesday!?

September 22, 2010

Yes, we’re sad to see TIFF go as well, but look at the bright side, dress code requirements will return to normalcy, low-cut v-neck/blazer combos will be reduced by approximately 94%, and pornstars will go back to getting blasted, as opposed to blasting tunes at well-respected venues. We jest, we jest (or do we?); all in all, TIFF was a great time, and we must thank all the promoters who worked double time to bring in some truly spectacular names, most notably Footwork, who were able to snag Tim Green, Popof, among others. This week offers another delectable docket of events, with Saturday being the most appealing of the trio. For all of you in London, be sure to check out a star-studded cast on Sunday night which includes young guns like Neoteric, John Roman, Gingy and Milt Mortez.

This weekend kicks off with a resounding clap, nu-disco style, with In Flagranti poised to hit the decks at Wrongbar, and bring the dfloor to a simmer. No doubt this is a rare opportunity to witness one of the unquestioned biggest names in the disco resurgence, made so popular in 2009. The weekend continues with a massive tribute to Toronto’s electronic music scene at The Great Hall (equipped with a tantalizing after-party line-up), as well as a star-studded cast at Mod-Club. Finally, Saturday, the main event  in our humble eyes is the much anticipated release party for Gingy & Bordello’s “Vaporizer” EP. This one has the makings of a serious bender.

Turned On

May 18, 2010

In what amounts to one of the most compelling developments in the area of local electronic music production, we would like to warmly congratulate our friends Gingy, John Roman, and Milt Mortez for all being featured on DJ Neoteric’s much anticipated music compilation, which was featured on Discobelle Records, entitled Turned On: Volume 1. The selection features 17 of the most cutting edge tracks in our scene, coming from producers based around the globe, and we are truly so proud to see three of these tunes being sourced from our home and native land.

Gingy’s Thermite, John Roman’s Nigerian Dub remix of Nadastom’s Save Us, and Milt Mortez’s Pluto are all very diverse pieces, conveying the wide spectrum and strength of our local production — having no fixed sound, or uniform trait, whilst being malleable and dynamic . All three of these guys are on fire with their studio work, and it’s almost certain that the releases will continue to flow, at full throttle.  Please be sure to purchase all three of these tracks, in addition to the remaining 14 tracks featured on the compilation, by clicking on the link below. Great work gentlemen!

BASICS Friday

April 16, 2010

BASICS Radio, Headliner: DJ Neoteric

Today marks our inaugural collaboration with the notable mix series that we’ve be squacking about for some time now, BASICS radio. As is always the case in the hectic world we live in, we are doing this one on the fly, but rest assured, once we get into more of a routine, these will be executed seamlessly. At the moment, our homeboy Gingy aka Mr. Brian Wong is killing it, warming up the airwaves for the undisputed headliner, Mr. Jeremiah Neoteric. This live feed you see above is being broadcast in real time.

Also, yet another incredible feature of the live broadcast is the live chat, where you can converse with electronic music’s most talented minds, including Gingy, Milt Mortez, and of course Stonewall Trackson and the Vamp. So tune in, say what’s up, and most importantly, seize the opportunity to enjoy some very good music.

Basic Addition

April 8, 2010

As is always our chief mandate here at electroTO, tonight we will be documenting some major local movements, creating some serious buzz in the Toronto electronic music scene, and abroad. Basics Radio is a project being head-manned by our friends, and electroTO compatriots, Gingy and Milt Mortez. Based out of London, these dudes have basically created a radio show on CHRW London where they “showcase guest mixes from friends and other interesting people”.

The Basics mix series has included top-notch musical journeys by notable names such as Johnny Hockin, Koreless, Andrew Ross (Nacho Lovers), Sharivari, and the latest addition, Minor Modes, the latest project from Mark Meny. The MM mix is incredibly intelligent, skipping along with swooning jazz elements, and an atmospheric, feel-good theme throughout. Look out for big things from Minor Modes with original productions, and some notable remixes on the horizon. Chalk this mix up as another win for the city of Toronto. Tracklist after the jump!

Also, be sure to check out the full roster of Basics Radio mixes right HERE.

This post not only brings us an immense sense of pride and joy but also a sense of relief for finally getting it out there. London, Ontario has become a hot spot for electronic music and along with Golden Gloves and John Roman, Gingy and Bordello have aided the spread in popularity in a very big way.

Gingy and Bordello and the masterminds behind Vaporizer, the big room track that has graced countless youtube videos, charts and even Brodinski’s Mystery Mix. This power house of a track has also warrented huge remixes already from the likes of Rynecologist and the ever talented NT89 (which we haven’t heard yet but can only assume is massive). There is really nothing to say about this track that could do it justice. It’s one of the biggest things that you’ll ever own and has torn up every locale we’ve heard it played out. Enjoy this electroTO exclusive as a gift from us to you, our beloved fans.

Gingy Goes Styrofoam

December 17, 2009

Gingy

A very neat collaboration highlights the happenins at electroTO today –  as one of our favorite London-based DJ/Producers, Brian Wong aka Gingy has adapted a piece by the Styrofoam Ones, a Toronto-based pseudo-punk get up. The result is an addictive, house-infused, indie-rock anthem that is begging to be dropped at a holiday jam near you.

Here’s a brief low-down on the Styros: “Synth-Punk trio Styrofoam Ones are taking Toronto parties and basement jams by storm. Their spacey keyboards, fuzzed-out bass and pounding drums will lure you into a shattered mirror ball world populated with the latest species to emerge from a pop noir generation.” Combine this with the seasoned producing talent of Gingy, and you have the makings of something special. Gingy’s work has also appeared on electroTO’s Producing For Presents EP where his meticulous approach to house music is once again on display. Peep the remix below, and enjoy!

Producing For Presents

December 12, 2009

Producing For Presents EP

If you thought our charitable initiative ended on Thursday with the Charitable Rave at Wrongbar, you’re totally mistaken. With the incredible musical donations made my John Roman, Meech, Golden Gloves and Gingy — we were able to assemble a digital release EP, where all proceeds will go to the Heart House Hospice Charity. The EP retails at $8 for all three tracks, or $3 a piece. Be sure to grant the wish of the electronic music fan on your shopping list, and give them the gift of good music this Christmas!

All three tracks bring something different to the table, and all are previewable before purchase. Find it in your heart to donate even $3 to our cause, and receive some quality music, from our favorite local artists.

Over the past few months, we’ve seen this city truly embrace electronic music. It is now a rarity for there to be less than 10 quality events on any given weekend, and top-bill artists simply keep flowing. This weekend is no different, with tech-house legend Riva Starr descending upon The Social on Saturday night, brought to you by The Faktory. Friday, Mod Club has it on lock with electroTO homeboy Meech, who will be holding it down with the likes of Milano. Also, before the weekend is gone and done, our fam down in London will be throwing a jam under the banner of Real Real Hard — the bill includes the likes of John Roman, Gingy, Golden Gloves and DJ Neoteric (Dubsided).

Get It Started

November 5, 2009

Boys Noize hits London, ON tonight in a continuation of his Power Tour that we mentioned earlier in the week, and the night is set to really go off. Those attending this one won’t regret arriving early as they’ll be treated to sets by Bordello, Golden Gloves and a Gingy/John Roman combo, all of whom are native to London and none of whom are strangers to electroTO. In anticipation, we’re dropping you a track from Golden Gloves and one from John Roman to give you a little sneak peak of what you might see before 1am when Boys Noize hits the stage at the London Music Hall.

Firstly, we have Golden Gloves, the duo of Ben and Kevin, whose distinct sound has really set them apart from a lot of the local production powers of the GTA.  Their track Casablanca has been played out by notable figures such as Blatta and Inesha, and their consistency suggests that they’re bound to receive more of the same international attention in the future. This tune, “Next To Nothing” is one of their newer tracks that’s been making some noise.

Golden Gloves – Next To Nothing

Following the set by Golden Gloves will be the tag team duo of John Roman and Gingy. Word on the street has it that the two have a track that they worked on together that they want to debut and what better time to do it than to the bass thirsty fans that will converge on the London Music Hall tonight? JR is getting some serious attention as of late, with fans ranging from London, Ontario all the way to Sydney, Australia. The recent news that his Nadastrom remix was charted by Brodinski confirms that he’s only getting bigger, and a blow-up is on the way. Here’s a tune that he sent out via his Facebook, Twitter etc. earlier this week, which has him trying his hand at the extremely popular disco trend but still putting that magic John Roman touch on it.
