Gold Standard

March 10, 2010

Remember when you were just a little kid, and you were inseparably attached to your favorite toy figurine, or favorite stuffed animal? Even to this day, you couldn’t really explain the immaterial bond you shared, but it just seemed to always exist, from the very beginning of your conscious life. For electroTO , we’re proud to say that we share a similar bond with our good friends Ben and Kevin, of Golden Gloves. They’ve had our back from day one, sending us tracks like Pick Up The Slack, Casablanca, and Next To Nothing, while also appearing on our Producing For Presents EP.

We’ve had the pleasure of seeing these guys grow and mature as local DJs and producers, as they have indeed become the Gold Standard for London’s electronic music scene. Today, this point is reaffirmed, with three sizzling new tunes from this dynamic duo. The first being a stunning tropical collabo with our good friend Bordello — remixing Schlachthofbronx’s Ayoba, the second being a clever tech-house take on a Lil’ Mama track, and the last track being a revolutionary dubstep rendition of Popof’s Shades. All three of the tunes bring something totally unique to the table, and put Ben’s production ingenuity on full display.

Be sure to check out Golden Gloves during the hectic (yet amazing) Canadian Music Week festivities. They will be appearing TONIGHT @ COBRA alongside Nadastrom, Nasty Nav and Jedi. Also they’ll be spinning SATURDAY @ SOUND ACADEMY alongside a long list of talent which includes A-Trak, Klever, Scratch Bastid, Meech, Rynecologist and Bordello. Also, outside the CMW hooplah, Golden Gloves is also competing in the Latin Fever remix contest being run through Beatport. Their collaboration with John Roman is massive, and deserves your vote — so do that right HERE!

Producing For Presents

December 12, 2009

Producing For Presents EP

If you thought our charitable initiative ended on Thursday with the Charitable Rave at Wrongbar, you’re totally mistaken. With the incredible musical donations made my John Roman, Meech, Golden Gloves and Gingy — we were able to assemble a digital release EP, where all proceeds will go to the Heart House Hospice Charity. The EP retails at $8 for all three tracks, or $3 a piece. Be sure to grant the wish of the electronic music fan on your shopping list, and give them the gift of good music this Christmas!

All three tracks bring something different to the table, and all are previewable before purchase. Find it in your heart to donate even $3 to our cause, and receive some quality music, from our favorite local artists.

Get It Started

November 5, 2009

Boys Noize hits London, ON tonight in a continuation of his Power Tour that we mentioned earlier in the week, and the night is set to really go off. Those attending this one won’t regret arriving early as they’ll be treated to sets by Bordello, Golden Gloves and a Gingy/John Roman combo, all of whom are native to London and none of whom are strangers to electroTO. In anticipation, we’re dropping you a track from Golden Gloves and one from John Roman to give you a little sneak peak of what you might see before 1am when Boys Noize hits the stage at the London Music Hall.

Firstly, we have Golden Gloves, the duo of Ben and Kevin, whose distinct sound has really set them apart from a lot of the local production powers of the GTA.  Their track Casablanca has been played out by notable figures such as Blatta and Inesha, and their consistency suggests that they’re bound to receive more of the same international attention in the future. This tune, “Next To Nothing” is one of their newer tracks that’s been making some noise.

Golden Gloves – Next To Nothing

Following the set by Golden Gloves will be the tag team duo of John Roman and Gingy. Word on the street has it that the two have a track that they worked on together that they want to debut and what better time to do it than to the bass thirsty fans that will converge on the London Music Hall tonight? JR is getting some serious attention as of late, with fans ranging from London, Ontario all the way to Sydney, Australia. The recent news that his Nadastrom remix was charted by Brodinski confirms that he’s only getting bigger, and a blow-up is on the way. Here’s a tune that he sent out via his Facebook, Twitter etc. earlier this week, which has him trying his hand at the extremely popular disco trend but still putting that magic John Roman touch on it.

No headliner this week, but still a whole bunch of talent.

The Opener: electroTO Presents TRASH, Fri. @ Augusta House

Friday evening marks a major milestone in electroTO‘s young and illustrious history — and it goes by the name of TRASH.  The Augusta House (located in the heart of the Kensington village) will welcome the trio of Stonewall Trackson, The Vamp and Bordello to provide the musical accompaniment for the evening. The event has been tabbed TRASH: Opening House Party, and will hopefully be the first of many successful electroTO parties under the TRASH label. The evening will be absolutely ridiculous, there is very little doubt — and with 4 dollar drinks and a 5 dollar cover, you really can’t go wrong.

The Opener: Barletta, John Roman, Conor Cutz & Real Talk, Thurs. @ Wrongbar

Familiar faces descend upon Wrongbar on your Thursday night. Four of the sharpest up-and-comers in the T-dot electro scene come together for a night of debauchery and some of the hardest hitting electronic music on the planet. Also, with Barletta and Mr. Roman present, you can be assured that exclusives will be flying around like a leaf on a windy day.

The Opener: Motor, Thurs. @ The Social

This week’s version of Social Thursday’s brings the duo of Mr. No and Bryan Black into town — who are more commonly known as Motor. Both 4Play and ADD have said it beautifully: “The duo have remixed the likes of Marilyn Manson, Throbbing Gristle and most recently, Depeche Mode as well as remixing the theme song for the final Godzilla film, Final Wars, in a collaboration with Felix Da Housecat. The MOTOR duo are also known for their work under the alias XLOVER whose album, Pleasure & Romance, was released on DJ Hell’s Gigolo Records last year…” and it goes on and on. Bottom line, don’t miss out on this one.

The Opener: Zeds Dead & Medley, Thurs. @ StrangeLove

StrangeLove opens it’s doors to a pair of producers who have been blowing up as of late, namely Zeds Dead. The Toronto-based duo perfectly fuse vulgur dubstep basslines with hard-hitting breaks, creating a top-notch brand of dubstep music. Their newest track “Summer Grime” is an absolute masterpiece, and we highly recommend checking out their Myspace for a listen, right HERE.

The Opener: Nasty Nav, Meech & Golden Gloves, Sat. @ Wrongbar

Three of the Toronto-area’s best DJs go at it Saturday at Wrongbar. We had the pleasure of catching our good friends Meech and Golden Gloves just last week opening for Congorock, and of course, they dismantled the place. If Nasty gets on the decks, prepare yourselves for an always stellar job as well. We will never get tired of these guys.

time_festival

The Headliner: Embrace Presents Time Festival, Sat. @ Sound Academy

Talk about an event that need no sales pitch at all — the 2009 Time Festival, hosted by Embrace, at the Sound Academy. The bill is absolutely packed with world-class electro personalities, you can peep the event poster above if you don’t believe us. A-Trak, Mehdi, Felix Cartal, Don Rimini etc. etc. will all be spinning non-stop exclusives, showcasing their undeniable skills. Anyone who is anyone in the Toronto electronic scene will be in attendance Saturday, and we highly recommend you do yourself a favour and attend. We will be there in full force, tearing up the d-floor and providing you with the track ID play-by-play, on our trusty Twitter account, which you can check out right HERE.

The Opener: Congorock, Thurs. @ The Social

On any other weekend, a visit from the Italian-native Congorock would certainly be crowned the week’s glorified ‘Headliner’, but it just so happens that his appearance falls on the same weekend as TIME. Such is life. Regardless, The Social is the undisputed place to be on your Thursday night, and that has been verified by our good friend and Toronto promoter, Mr. Cody Lekush. We’ve kept a close eye on Congorock ever since his debut single “Runark”, we’ve watched him explode under the watchful eye of Bob Cornelius Rifo of the Bloody Beetroots, and we look forward to going buck with him on Thursday.

The Opener: Steve Porter & JELO, Fri. @ Footwork

The weekend’s final warm up for the TIME festival will showcase international house/techno dee-jay, Steve Porter, alongside Toronto-native JELO. The New York-born Porter dropped the album ‘Homegrown’ in 2005, a release that propelled him onto the global stage and contributed to DJ Times anointing him as one of “America’s Best DJs”. Meanwhile, JELO has ripped local events for years, and blew up after his widely regarded collabo with Deadmau5 entitled “The Reward Is Cheese” — again, a very solid bill.

Enjoy this weekend’s festivities everyone. It’s going to be wild.

The Headliner: Indie DJ Music Festival, Fri. @ MOD Club

This Friday the MOD Club treats our city to some of the most talented indie DJs and producers around. They managed to bring together Golden Gloves, Tom Wrecks and John Roman (all of whom have been featured here on our glorious blog) and others under the same roof so it really goes without saying that you’ve officially found plans for your Friday night that promises to be full of bangers. One can almost consider this a warm up for TIME Festival, where we’ll see many of the same faces once again, this time alongside the likes of A-Trak, Felix Cartal and co. Don’t let the indie title fool you, some of the tracks being dropped will undoubtedly be world class.

The Opener: Derrick Carter, Sat. @ Footwork

It’s not very often that Toronto has the opportunity to welcome a house-producer with as much distinction as Mr. Derrick Carter. Being raised in the Western suburbs of Chicago, Carter comes from a city with one of the most notorious house music pedigrees in the world, and he has successfully channeled that into his own productions. Derrick Carter has been dropping monster tracks in the underground house scene since before myself or Trackson were even born, and has collaborated with legendary names that include Mark Farina and Chris Nazuka. Be very excited for this one, it shall be nuts.

The Opener:  Dirty Dale and Medley, Thurs. @ StrangeLove

The always dependable option for your Thursday night is, of course StrangeLove’s Dance Like You F*** event, hosted by The Jons.  This week they welcome Dirty Dale, a veteran to the Toronto party scene, and a dude known for his extensive house-music knowlegde. For a listen, check out his “Dirty Dirty Dirty Sessions” Podcast right HERE. He will be joined by Medley, the man who virtually laid the foundation for StrangeLove’s dominant Thursday night party.

The Opener: Little Dragon, Thurs. @ Wrongbar

If it’s the European downtempo, lounge-esque scene that you’re feinding on your Thursday night, you most definitely want to make your way down to Wrongbar and check Little Dragon. Their chilled out, melodic sound (stemming from the voice of Yukimi Nagano) is euphoric in the most beautiful of ways, and will definitely have the Wrongbar faithful swaying in an inescapable trance. Definitely a step outside the ordinary for the electro-propers, but a tremendous musical experience nonetheless.

The Opener: The Sheen Brothers, Fri. @ Wrongbar

For those who aren’t completely sure who The Sheen Brothers even are, it is simply the collaborative offspring of Cosmo Baker and the Toronto born, 4th Pyramid. Again, this will be step outside the realm of electro, but sometimes some ‘Jherri Curl Funk’ music is just what the doctor ordered. The Sheen Brothers will also be joined by 84.85 and Lucie Tic.

Deebs

Friday evening, we found ourselves wandering into the obscure and unknown electronic domain of Guelph, Ontario. Believe it or not, the small university town to the Northwest of the city has been slowly making a name for itself by bringing in bigtime local talents to wreck the discotek at Van Gogh’s Ear. The resident DJ of the operation is Mr. Will Diebel, aka Deebs, and as we saw first-hand Friday night — the kid can straight up, throw it down.

What’s even bigger than Deeb’s live game, is his Internet reputation as a producer, climbing into the upper echelons of the Hypem.com Top-10 for his remix of Tegan & Sara’s “Walking With A Ghost”. Now even though it’s against electroTO policy to throw 3 to 4 tracks up at a time, when it’s in the spirit of promoting a budding electronic talent, we can undoubtedly make an exception. All three of the tracks we have for you are miles beyond solid, and if by chance you wander into the far and away city of Guelph, fear not electro fans — you have a home at Van Gogh’s Ear with the Four To The Floor boys.

Now comment on this post, hit up Deebs’ MySpace, send him parcels via snail mail — just let him know what is good. It’s truly the least you can do.

Glove-Struck

June 30, 2009

As my boy Trackson lovingly pointed out, it was indeed my birthday this past weekend, and was I feeling pretty gloomy about my haul of gifts — that is, until about 11:30 this morning, when Benny Bumpdatsh*t! of Golden Gloves dropped us an email. Lo’ and behold, my best birthday gift of them all, the newest Golden Gloves production, “Casablanca”, paired with the official Barletta remix.

Last time we heard from Golden Gloves, they dropped us their banger “Pick Up The Slack” (which, if you don’t have, you need to get now) and we joked that the duo of Benny and Cowiebunga had locked themselves in the studio. All joking aside, now we’re convinced. The local tandem have obviously been focusing on drawing up production ideas as of late, and they’re on the money once again with the single “Casablanca”.

Both the Original Mix and the Barletta Mix offer the same hard-hitting throws, cued with the ever-so-clever Beastie Boys vocal, “DROPPP!!”. The almost Major Lazery feel at the outset of the Original Mix, tricks you into thinking you can chill on the track — then the build, break and drop turn the dance-floor into Hiroshima (ouch!). Incredible work.

And on the eve of Canada Day, we’d like to mention how it makes us so proud that these dudes are from our very own backyard, cranking out world-class chunes. Unreal.
