Hello Bordello

June 21, 2009

Bordello

This marks yet another significant day in the young history of electroTO. We’ve decided that bringing you the finest in electronic singles was simply not enough– thus, a June Promo Mix was born. To make this dream a reality, we enlisted one of Toronto’s up-and-comers to conjure up a set list, and impress us. And this is just what Bordello did.

Who the f*** is Bordello? — Is no doubt the first thing that comes to mind; so let us enlighten you. The kid is a GTA native, but spends the majority of his days lurking the mean streets of London, Ontario, attaining an education. He’s managed to develop rapport with notable local talents including Meech, and electroTO homeboys, Golden Gloves. Most impressive in our mind, is Bordello’s knack for mixing without a laptop, which is indisputably rare in this day and age.

As for the set itself, Bordello proves to be more than just a one trick pony, providing an eclectic mix of crowd-pleasing electro, alongside a fair share of hard-hitting tech house. The mixing is seamless, and the drops are well-timed. With names like Zombie Nation, Tiga, Proxy, Shadow Dancer, MSTRKRFT, and Boys Noize all appearing on the set, we hope you’re as excited as we were to download and play it. Peep the track list that we’ve included below for the full breakdown.

Most importantly, hit up ‘Dello’s MySpace, his Facebook page, his front porch (if you know where he lives), and show him some love. There is something to be said for investing time and creating these mixes for the enjoyment of others– so say something back.

We can count ourselves lucky for two reasons. First, we are lucky because home-grown electronic talent from the Toronto area is expanding far beyond the shadow cast by MSTRKRFT, and these DJ/Producers are making their names heard through their quality work. Second, we are lucky because these up-and-coming producers are willing to show love to independent blogs from the GTA, so that their fans can truly embrace their music.

There is no better example of this than Toronto’s own Golden Gloves– the duo of Benny Bumpdatsh*t! and Cowiebunga.  Though they come from diverse musical backgrounds, they have come together to create a dominant DJ/production team that has catapulted onto the electro scene.

It would seem that this duo have locked themselves in the studio as of late, and it has paid off large dividends. Here at ElectroTO, we’ve been blown away by GG’s collaboration with John Roman (posted a while back),  as well as their remix of Major Lazer’s “Hold The Line” (which might be the best of the batch so far). So you can imagine how excited we were to find their newest production Pick Up The Slack in our drop box today.

The track has been described as having a “Dutch house” feel, and we can honestly say we’re feeling it 100%. Simply put, the track is massive. The catchy harmony, the bouncy bassline, and the well-timed drops have all the makings of a d-floor smasher.

Also, you can check out GG at the Time Festival in Toronto on July 25th alongside Canadian talents like A-Trak, Felix Cartal, Barletta etc. We will be in attendance– losing our minds, of course. If you want to join us, check out the line up and grab tickets HERE. Without further adieu, straight from Golden Gloves, here it is:

Tiga

In what will become a weekly phenomena at electroTO, we will be providing our loyal following with a “What’s Good Wednesday” segment, exactly like the one you see here. These specific posts will survey the ground-shattering events that are scheduled for the weekend ahead in our wonderful city.  We will then use our best judgment/psychic powers to provide you with the “Headliner”, or the event that you simply cannot miss. This week’s attempt will likely be the easiest edition in our existence, given that the Turbo Recording all-stars are in town. So without further adieu, What’s Good Wednesday!?

The Headliner: Tiga feat. Thomas Von Party and Milano, Fri. @ CiRCA

If this is not one of your most anticipated events of the summer, you need to shift your priorities immediately and make it one. This friday, the golden-boy of Turbo Recordings, Tiga, will descend upon Toronto’s CiRCA nightclub accompanied  by Thomas Von Party and Milano. Forums, Blogs and Viral Videos have all been raving about Tiga’s performance during his world tour. With well-documented exclusive drops such as Proxy’s “8000″ , Brodinski and Noob’s “Peanut Club”, and the Proxy remix of Zombie Nation’s “Shottieville”, the set-list promises to leave you awe-struck.

The Opener (1): Shit La Merde feat. Nasty Nav and Famous Players, Sat. @Wrongbar

If you have any left in the tank after your incredulous Friday night at CiRCA, you could always head down to Queen West on Saturday evening and hit up some local talent at Wrongbar. Shit La Merde hails from the Toronto area, and is coming off a huge gig at Sneaky Dee’s on May the 29th that apparently was out of control. He will certainly put on quite a show for his home-town fans.

The Opener (2): John Roman feat. Golden Gloves, Fri. @StrangeLove

The electroTO favorite, and London (Ontario) native, John Roman will be lurking on College street Friday night, at no other venue than StrangeLove. With a growing assortment of original productions, there is a very good chance you’ll be exposed to exclusive material. Roman is joined by another local tandem, namely, Golden Gloves who we’ve seen open for both MSTRKRFT and Felix Cartal. This will be a solid alterntive for your Friday evening if you have something against CiRCA.

The Opener (3): Meech, Thurs. @ StrangeLove

What better way to kick off your weekend than by sharing your Thursday evening with one of Toronto’s most talented up-and-coming DJ’s– Meech. Equipped with his widely acclaimed smasher “Bottom of the Fourth”, Meech has shown a knack for dominating crowds across Southern Ontario. Fresh off a series of gigs in So-Cal, Meech will certainly have a couple new tricks to share with the StrangeLove faithful.

John Roman

John Roman has been a favorite of electroTO for a while. First, he had us warping it down, then soon-after he  wrecked the diskotek, which, after a timely edit by Barletta, had us going absolutely nuts every time we heard it being dropped. The local Canadian producer has been tearing it up lately, and how better to complement his skill than team up with two more Canadians, namely, Golden Gloves.

Roman dropped this little gem mere moments ago via his Facebook, and we couldn’t help but share it. If you hadn’t already heard of him, John Roman is definitely somebody you should be looking out for as an up and coming producer. The kid out of London is doing big things, and this track in particular will leave no doubt in your mind as to why you keep hearing his name. So here it is: A collaboration with Golden Gloves. The brand new John Roman track,  Huh?.
