Harvard Bass

One of the most sensational Thursday evening dockets we’ve ever seen. A long-weekend festival line-up awaits us, with some of the finest DJs in the land descending upon some of the biggest, baddest venues the city has to offer. Tack on to that the fact that we will be airing the tenth installment of etoLIVE tonight at 10:30pm — this is going to be a weekend for the ages.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

February 16, 2011

I write this little blurb with an air of excitement looming, as the second test session of etoLIVE is set to pop off tonight on this very domain around 22:30hr (in, oh, about 45 mins or so). We took a good swing at the whole live radio thing last week (not without a hitch), and we’re confident that we can build upon that inaugural session, with a bundle of fresh tunes, and some hopefully intelligent commentary. During the show, we’ll also take time to talk about some of the events coming up in Toronto this weekend, including timely appearances by Harvard Bass, alongside Torro Torro, Meati, and Meech (Friday @ Mod Club), as well as Zombie Disco Squad, alongside Andrew Ross, and Poupon (Saturday @ The Social).

Watching You

February 8, 2011

We’re always very interested to see what’s going on at Sound Pellegrino headquarters, keeping close tabs on their forthcoming releases, while staying up to date with Teki’s always intriguing Twitter account. By now, you’ll know that for the entirety of 2009, this label could do no wrong, catapulting names like Renaissance Man, Momma’s Boy, Harvard Bass, Douster and Gucci Vump to the forefront of electronic music, repeatedly shocking the world with a series of incredible EPs, exclusively for digital download.

In more recent times; however, the releases haven’t quite tickled our fancy in quite the same way. Maybe we’re simply not adjusting well to the evolution of forward-thinking house music, or maybe they’re just overthinking the forwardness altogether. In our estimation, it’s more of the latter, but I’m sure Teki and Orgasmic would gladly refute that.

Next on the short-term agenda for the Institubes sub-label, is an EP by German duo Savage Skulls, whom I was surprised to discover do quite a bit of unheralded ghost producing — including work on Robyn‘s album, as well as work on Carli and Marcus Price’s “Matt Bira Kvinnor Weed” EP. Not bad side gigs in addition to their release on Dubsided, and of course their work with Douster and Tony Senghore.

Their latest work, set to join the Sound Pellegrino catalog in the coming weeks, is a step in the right direction for all parties involved. Both Caravan and Watching You have quality production finger prints all over them, and the remixes by Jacques Greene and Payme are both really tasteful additions to the release. Greene goes with his typical funked-out future-music touch, will Payme hops of the 303 bandwagon and fashions a pretty stylish acid loop. Check out the entire release below, and comment away.

HARD Gets Haunted

October 15, 2010

In an attempt to hype up a pair of very intimidating Halloween jams in Los Angeles, HARD have commissioned Mr. Ed Banger, aka Pedro Winter, aka Busy P, as well as Mr. Tastemaker, aka Louis Brodinski to put together a little promo mix. The compilation certainly doesn’t lack star power, and embodies 17 thrashing tracks fusing everything from electro to techno and back again. It would be kinda silly to point out one or two cuts worth paying particular attention to, as this mix sets the standard for today’s most relevant electronic music. Love it or hate it, this mix bumps hard and is guaranteed to incite the masses.

Tracklist

01 DANIEL HAAKSMAN // Hands Up (Jan Driver Rmx)
02 NT89 & CAMEL // Flush
03 KEITH // Get up Ouch
04 RACHEL BARTON // Goose Step (Justin Martin Rmx)
05 BREACH // Man Up
06 LA RIOTS // The Drop (Duke Dumont ‘Thudding Like Elmer’ Rmx)
07 SOVNGER & ALEX GOPHER // Breathless (Alex Gopher Night Rmx)
08 TIGA // You gonna Want Me (Hey Today Rmx)
09 DISCO OF DOOM // Sex Face
10 NOM DE STRIP // Tickler
11 STEVE ANGELLO // Knas (Wafa Re-edit)
12 NOVALIMA // Machete (Savage Skulls & French Fries Rmx)
13 HARVARD BASS // O.N.U.R.P.
14 LVIS 1990 // Forever You
15 BRENMAR & NGUZU NGUZU // Knee Deep
16 WILDLIFE // Metazoa
17 SKREAM // Rolling Kicks

Running Time: 0:52:33
Quality: 320 kbps

Brodinski & Busy P — HARD Haunted Mansion Promo Mix (Soundcloud)

Scion A/V have made their much anticipated collaboration with Sound Pellegrino official, and it comes in the form of an eight-track sampler, released just hours ago via the Scion A/V SoundCloud page. The promotional release has been rumored since late June, with the majority of the hooplah stemming from a 3-hour downloadable mix by the likes of Teki Latex, Momma’s Boy, and LOL Boys. When scanning the eight tunes below, pay careful attention to the dOP remix of What Is Guru (of course, a track originally made famous by none other than Renaissance Man) — it’s very very neat. The compilation proceeds to feature unreleased work from names like Harvard Bass, Gucci Vump, as well as Bambounou (who we heard from, just yesterday). Eat this up.

Despite the frigid temperatures that have plagued our city over the past week, this weekend’s weather forecast has called for much more pleasant climes, and luckily for us, a musical forecast that is equally promising. The actions starts off Thursday evening with Dirtybird Records DJ/Producer Doorly playing at Wrongbar, and continues Friday with Atlanta’s favorite spinmaster Klever hitting the stage at Mod, and finally Sound Pellegrino and Turbo Recordings DJ/Producer Harvard Bass caps off the weekend Saturday, at The Social. Buckle up everyone, this will be good.

ALSO, seeing that it’s Wednesday, that means that the latest live-recorded mix from our APRIL Summer Session is now available for download on Soundcloud. This week’s edition features Toronto’s fan favorite, Meech, and the collection of songs seemingly embodies everything this party animal is about. Get it HERE.

Raining Crystals

March 20, 2010

Thermal Team It’s Raining Crystals From The Future by Sound Pellegrino on Mixcloud

An exclusive 12 track mix by Teki & Orgasmic (aka the Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team). The mix features four upcoming tracks set for release on the SP label, in addition to work from Sinden’s new label Grizzly, Youngunz and Dirtybird. It’s truly difficult to pick out a climax in this 40 minute ensemble, but the Noob remix of Para One’s Kiwi is truly out of this world. Honorable mention also goes out to the Douster remix of a mystery Bobmo track, as well as the Harvard Bass remix of Felix Cartal. My God, if this is what the future holds, it is a very good time to be a fan of house music.

Ivy League Bass

October 10, 2009

Harvard Bass

As we suggested in WGW this past Wednesday, we have an absolutely packed bill in the city this wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend. This includes an appearance by Mr. Harvard Bass at the Drake Underground tomorrow night (Sunday). This American-born sensation, who produces out of San Diego, CA has proceeded to make the electronic music industry his personal playground as of late, remixing and producing his way to mass notoriety.

The track we have for you today is an ultra-bassy remix of The Toxic Avenger’s “Rush Hour”, where Harvard Bass appropriately lives up to his name, and lets fly on some big-time low frequency sound. The undeniably French synth is a nice complement to the piece, providing some timely build-ups that make for a classic mid-set marvel. See you Sunday.
