Jokers of the Scene

The SBTRKT show at Wrongbar is going to be a memorable one, that we can all agree upon, espcially with Sampha & ANGO being added to the bill, not to mention rumblings of some special guest appearances as well. Saturday is a pretty busy evening all-around, with options laid out across the city grid. Our best bet goes to another mysterious late-night affair put on by The Faktory & Ledewit featuring the likes of Jokers of the Scene, Gingy & Bordello.

A long list of possibilities on this fine weekend starting off Thursday with This Is Music and Turbo artist Boy 8-Bit, alongside local phenom John Roman. From there it’s an intimate affair Friday night with the man of the moment, Mr. Julio Bashmore. Finally, Saturday evening, some of Toronto’s finest will be unearthing a 20 year-old cinema, a late night affair that will include the likes of Jokers of the Scene, Gingy and some secret appearances as well. Another option is the Discobelle duo of Meati & Meech alongside local kid Wenzell at Wrongbar.

As I look outside my snowy window, my mind cannot help but venture two weeks into the future when the eTO crew will descend upon Miami for Ultra. Then I’m forced to snap out of it, because Canadian Music Week is in full flight in our city, with a hectic tasklist for all affiliated with this website. Both Friday and Saturday night are fixed with incredible headliners, Friday offering a Night Slugs label showcase with bossman Bok Bok alongside Girl Unit and Kingdom, while Saturday night will feature a late night affair with one of house music’s biggest — Mr. Jamie Jones. Tune into eTOLive tonight at 10:30 to hear a couple tunes from the Nightslugs family, as well as Jamie Jones.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

December 15, 2010

This is a very important weekend coming up for the electroTO extended family, as we’ll be hosting our second annual Producing For Presents EP Release Party. We’ve been beating the thing to death, and we’ll continue to do so, because it’s for a great cause and it’s a showcase of great music.  In addition, the DJs are donating their time and wages to support Heart House Hospice, and we will continue to sell copies of the EP compilation for the same cause — so less fortunate kids can have gifts under the tree this Christmas.  We’d love to see you guys out this Saturday at Wrongbar. I’ll be in attendance, alongside Trackson and Kemosabe. Should be hectic!

Wasps Under A Toy Boat

September 15, 2009

NOTE: This was meant to be posted yesterday but I was having some technical difficulties so I’m going to give this one a second shot. It’s not often that I make a post’s title the title of the song. It reminds me too much of those “blogs” that just post full albums. I think you’d agree, however, that this name is just about as creative as anything I could ever come up with– so I’ll let it be. Two things that need to be said first. This track is really tech, which will turn some people off and I guess turn some people on at the same time? Secondly it’s over a year old which might have some people asking why I’d post a track that’s over a year old. The answer is this: when Jokers of the Scene were in town as part of our TRASH night they dropped this tune and I forgot to ask them what it was, so I’ve been wandering hopelessly around the internet hoping to find it. Finally, I did.

So this one comes from a talented dude by the name of Phil Kieran from Belfast, who I must admit I hadn’t heard much to write home about from until this one. His new album drops on Cocoon on the 21st of September so that might be something you might want to check out if you like this one. Wasps Under a Toy Boat is best described by a certain bobbing of the head that you’ll recognize as that of Chris from JOTS. It’s really all that I can think of when I listen to this one aside from the fact that it sounds exactly like Wasps Under a Toy Boat probably would, although I haven’t really had to imagine what that would sound like until today. If tech is you thing, then this is your track. If not then I guess I’ll have to make it up to you another day with something more basscentric.

Green With Envy

September 8, 2009

Tim Green

Today’s musical journey revolves around this man, Tim Green aka TG, a budding 20-something DJ/Producer from Kent, England. Green’s talent has been recognized by the likes of “Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Carl Cox, Claude Von Stroke and other industry leaders”, and understandably so.  On his myspace it reads, “Tim Green is one of those producers who doesn’t turn in a lot of filler tracks [...] when “TG” or Tim Green puts something out there, it has a strong sense of character and literally rocks a dancefloor to its core.”

This description could not be more true, and upon listening to today’s feature track, you will have the same conviction. “Kitch In” is one of two pieces stemming from the widely sought-after Tim Green EP, released in late July. The track was dropped by Jokers of the Scene at electroTO’s TRASH party a couple weeks back, captivating the crowd with the clever sample of ZZT’s “The Worm”… (Woo!). Quite simply, the work is a tech house masterpiece, a minimal marvel, if you will — so be sure to check out the crisp 320kbps version below.

TRASH ft. Jokers of the Scene

The Headliner: electroTO Presents TRASH ft. Jokers of the Scene, Sat. @ Augusta House

Ladies and gents, the time has come. Ottawa’s Jokers of the Scene (of Fool’s Gold Records) will be gracing the Augusta House this Saturday, as a part of electroTO’s TRASH. With a long list of world-class tracks including their remixes of “Turbo” (by Burns) and “The Change-Up” (by Rob Threezy), as well as their original production “Baggy Bottom Boys” — JOTS is well equipped to put on one of the summer’s biggest nights yet. In case that’s not enough, myself, Trackson and Bordello will be hitting the decks earlier in the evening, so come check us out, and show love.

The Opener: 12th Planet, XI, Sek One, Zeds Dead, Fri. @ Wrongbar

Cody LeKush, James Forsythe and David King somehow always find a way to pack their bills, no matter where they throw a jam. Friday night at Wrongbar will be no different, with 12th Planet set to wreck the discotek, DUBSTEP style. As explained on the Wrongbar event page, “The British dubstep movement takes hold in LA thanks to 12th Planet and the events he aligns himself with; Smog, Media Contender, HARD, and his own club night Dubtroit [...] His wicked beats are off axis. His subsonic frequencies surround you in their own orbit. America’s first king of dubstep is ready for impact.”

The Opener: TapeDeckBros, Brake, Vaneska & Tricky Carrera, Fri. @ Supermarket

We always love boosting local talent that we’ve previously featured on this space, and the TapeDeckBros. are a prime example. We pushed their remix of the GoldenGirls track “Do The Criminal” a while back, and it was met with overwhelming support. The duo will be kept company by some of the Toronto electro scene’s top talents, listed above. With The Mansion in charge, the party should be pretty dope.

The Opener: DJ Maus, Fri. @ Nocturne

Well done by nocturne for their write-up. Have a look: “Making an impact on the international scene with her recent productions for Thoughtless Music, DJ Maus has been keeping dance floors moving through the cold Montreal winters for over ten years. Don’t miss this rare chance to catch her signature smooth mixing style and lush tech-house selections before she decamps to Europe!” Should be a very good show, at an equally solid venue.

Have fun kids,

I haven’t posted in a while, leaving the responsibility of providing the world with beautifully crafted music solely on the shoulders of The Vamp. He did well.

Anyways, here at electroTO there’s a common theme that we’ve noticed as we play tracks back and forth to one another, blaring them at volumes that our computers can hardly handle. We tend to love two things. We love music that stretches the boundaries of what we usually expect from producers, and we love homegrown talent.

Ottawa’s Jokers of the Scene bring us both with their masterfully remixed version of Burn’s Turbo. I’m not too sure if I’m supposed to know who Burns is, and obviously searching for Burns on the Internet renders every result with the exception of the one I’m actually looking for, so you’ll have to excuse the lack of information on that one. The Jokers got their start with Fools Gold, and while their skill as producers has improved over time, they still have the same feel to them that got them noticed, and if you haven’t heard it already it’s something you might want to get on. Their resume of remixes is impressive and this is no exception.
