Milano

The Time Festival Edition of What’s Good Wednesday!? — Of course, Toronto’s Third Annual star-studded electronic music event is going down Friday @ Sound Academy. It features the likes of mainstream icon, Diplo, alongside a pair of dubstep pioneers in Skream & Benga, atop the bill. Some more careful inquiry into the line-up, and you’ll find some very good sleeper talent playing as well — with names like Kingdom, Azari & III, Milano and Konrad Black. But don’t exert all your energy on the Friday, because Saturday night features another really good booking by our friends at The Faktory — Nadastrom, in addition to our boy Meech’s follow up appearance at Guvernment.

Simian Mobile Techno

March 12, 2010

In early January, we posted a certain Essential Mix put together by close friends Jas Ford & James Shaw, aka Simian Mobile Disco. Those of you who frequent this space on the regular, will know that we don’t make a habit of posting such mixes; however, we were, and still are convinced that 2010 is going to be a monumental year for this British duo, so we thought it was appropriate.

We mentioned back then, that SMD were putting together their next LP — said to be dedicated exclusively to vocal-less, ‘unpleasant’ techno music. Fast forward to today — An intriguing precursor to their forthcoming LP, is the Extra Temporary EP release (which dropped exclusively through Beatport at the end of February), showcasing a taste of SMD’s  mid-numbing brand of techno. Wichita Recordings explains that “the EP is a collection of six rare and hard to find SMD instrumental tracks which were made around the same time as their Temporary Pleasure album.”

The track we’ve made available for you off this release is titled Are You In the Picture?, and it’s a shining example of that masterful minimal-tech sound that SMD are known for. Who really needs vocals anyway? Also, what makes this post so much sweeter is that you can catch Simian Mobile Disco’s DJ set tonight at Arcade Friday @ Mod Club, alongside Turbo star Milano. Yay #CMW.

Over the past few months, we’ve seen this city truly embrace electronic music. It is now a rarity for there to be less than 10 quality events on any given weekend, and top-bill artists simply keep flowing. This weekend is no different, with tech-house legend Riva Starr descending upon The Social on Saturday night, brought to you by The Faktory. Friday, Mod Club has it on lock with electroTO homeboy Meech, who will be holding it down with the likes of Milano. Also, before the weekend is gone and done, our fam down in London will be throwing a jam under the banner of Real Real Hard — the bill includes the likes of John Roman, Gingy, Golden Gloves and DJ Neoteric (Dubsided).

What’s Good Wednesday!?

September 2, 2009

Tiga @ Labour Of Love

The Headliner: Tiga w/ D.I.M., The Whip, AutoErotique & More, Sun. @ Guvernment

Toronto’s saturation of dance music talent this weekend can be attributed to the Guvernment’s annual Labour Day festival, conveniently named “Labour of Love”. This year’s crop of performers within the famous “electro tent” is a truly star-studded affair, with Turbo Recordings mainstay, Tiga, holding down the grand finale. Tiga is joined by Boys Noize Records product D.I.M.,  fresh off his absolutely mind-numbing collaboration with TAI, entited “Lyposuct”. The evenings openers include The Whip, DIM MAK’s AutoErotique, hometown hero Nasty Nav, among many others.

The Opener: Milano, Nasty Nav, Brandon Sek, Barletta, Fri. @ Mod Club

The inaugural night for Arcade Friday’s brings a haul of local talent that is brimming over the top. Former Randomland boss, and Turbo Recordings artist Milano will be joined by Wrongbar’s Nasty Nav, Brandon Sek, and Barletta. With FAK, The Jons, and Mansion all in on this one, there will likely be a lot of beautiful people, and vodka being used for both consumption and bathing. Should be nuts.

The Opener: Brandon Sek & Paul Revered, Sat. @ Tota

Our choice for Saturday is a bit of a sleeper, but totally worth the trek to Queen West. The spot is called Tota and the music will be an eclectic mix of house, tech house and techno. Music to be provided by the very talented Brandon Sek and Paul Revered. We had the chance to check out Sek last weekend at the Faktory Loft afterparty with Drop The Lime, and Blatta & Inesha –  and seriously, Brandon Sek absolutely blew us away. Don’t sleep on this Toronto.

The Opener: Real Talk, The FranDiscos & Deadlines, Wed. @ Pacha

Tonight, Pacha’s “Movie Night” will host the talented duo Real Talk, our homeboy’s The FranDiscos and Deadlines. The evening is a FAK production, which assures you that shit will indefinitely pop-off. Pacha is very solid venue, and the bill is right, so make your way down to 1305 Dundas and have yourself a good one.

time_festival

The Headliner: Embrace Presents Time Festival, Sat. @ Sound Academy

Talk about an event that need no sales pitch at all — the 2009 Time Festival, hosted by Embrace, at the Sound Academy. The bill is absolutely packed with world-class electro personalities, you can peep the event poster above if you don’t believe us. A-Trak, Mehdi, Felix Cartal, Don Rimini etc. etc. will all be spinning non-stop exclusives, showcasing their undeniable skills. Anyone who is anyone in the Toronto electronic scene will be in attendance Saturday, and we highly recommend you do yourself a favour and attend. We will be there in full force, tearing up the d-floor and providing you with the track ID play-by-play, on our trusty Twitter account, which you can check out right HERE.

The Opener: Congorock, Thurs. @ The Social

On any other weekend, a visit from the Italian-native Congorock would certainly be crowned the week’s glorified ‘Headliner’, but it just so happens that his appearance falls on the same weekend as TIME. Such is life. Regardless, The Social is the undisputed place to be on your Thursday night, and that has been verified by our good friend and Toronto promoter, Mr. Cody Lekush. We’ve kept a close eye on Congorock ever since his debut single “Runark”, we’ve watched him explode under the watchful eye of Bob Cornelius Rifo of the Bloody Beetroots, and we look forward to going buck with him on Thursday.

The Opener: Steve Porter & JELO, Fri. @ Footwork

The weekend’s final warm up for the TIME festival will showcase international house/techno dee-jay, Steve Porter, alongside Toronto-native JELO. The New York-born Porter dropped the album ‘Homegrown’ in 2005, a release that propelled him onto the global stage and contributed to DJ Times anointing him as one of “America’s Best DJs”. Meanwhile, JELO has ripped local events for years, and blew up after his widely regarded collabo with Deadmau5 entitled “The Reward Is Cheese” — again, a very solid bill.

Enjoy this weekend’s festivities everyone. It’s going to be wild.

Skream & Benga

The Headliner: Skream and Benga, Sun. @ Wrongbar

Sunday evening, Toronto will welcome two pioneers of dubstep to Wrongbar, namely, Skream and Benga. Both hailing from the UK, Skream and Benga have helped to shape the development of dubstep during the early 2000′s, seeing it through its most primitive stages. Both have gained notoriety as of late, none more than Skream, by way of his remix of La Roux’s “In For The Kill”.  Sunday’s show will be saturated with the hardest hitting drops known to man, and may not be for those who make use of a pacemaker, or have coronary problems.

The Opener: DJ Tasc, Milano and Bangers & Mash, Fri. @ CiRCA

The weekly edition of CiRCA’s Randomland features local talent, DJ Tasc, joined by Milano and Bangers & Mash. Understandably not as exciting as some of the big-name talent that has frequented Randomland lately– these guys will undoubtedly hold there own. Keep your ear open for DJ Tasc’s original productions, which are available for you to preview on his myspace, right HERE.

The Opener:  Rynecologist, Status Brown and Applied Science, Sat. @ State Theater

Saturday features an electroTO favorite– Rynecologist, alongside friends Status Brown and Applied Science, brought to you by The Jons promotion team. Rynecologist, fresh off the release of his “Still Thinking” mixtape, is guaranteed to please the crowd with his creative track-lists, dropping everything from dubstep, to tech-house, and miraculously including classic rock on some occasions. Both Status Brown and Applied Science are known for their house expertise, and will not disappoint as openers.

Turbo Lag

June 5, 2009

Tiga @ CiRCA

Tonight is the night. Turbo Recordings’ heavyweights– Tiga, Thomas Von Party and Milano are in Toronto, and ready to inject aural dopamine into the ears of everyone willing to listen. CiRCA nightclub’s Randomland has witnessed some top-notch events with some big-name talent, but personally, I don’t think one has been as anticipated as tonight.

If it is musical exclusivity you seek, and you are unable to attend tonight’s event, we recommend that you become close friends with our Twitter feed, where we will be providing real-time updates, and deciphering the most accurate track ID’s. With a Zombie Nation Remixes EP set to drop at the end of the month, and a whole slew of Turbo material yet to see the light of day — it could get ridiculous.

Tiga

In what will become a weekly phenomena at electroTO, we will be providing our loyal following with a “What’s Good Wednesday” segment, exactly like the one you see here. These specific posts will survey the ground-shattering events that are scheduled for the weekend ahead in our wonderful city.  We will then use our best judgment/psychic powers to provide you with the “Headliner”, or the event that you simply cannot miss. This week’s attempt will likely be the easiest edition in our existence, given that the Turbo Recording all-stars are in town. So without further adieu, What’s Good Wednesday!?

The Headliner: Tiga feat. Thomas Von Party and Milano, Fri. @ CiRCA

If this is not one of your most anticipated events of the summer, you need to shift your priorities immediately and make it one. This friday, the golden-boy of Turbo Recordings, Tiga, will descend upon Toronto’s CiRCA nightclub accompanied  by Thomas Von Party and Milano. Forums, Blogs and Viral Videos have all been raving about Tiga’s performance during his world tour. With well-documented exclusive drops such as Proxy’s “8000″ , Brodinski and Noob’s “Peanut Club”, and the Proxy remix of Zombie Nation’s “Shottieville”, the set-list promises to leave you awe-struck.

The Opener (1): Shit La Merde feat. Nasty Nav and Famous Players, Sat. @Wrongbar

If you have any left in the tank after your incredulous Friday night at CiRCA, you could always head down to Queen West on Saturday evening and hit up some local talent at Wrongbar. Shit La Merde hails from the Toronto area, and is coming off a huge gig at Sneaky Dee’s on May the 29th that apparently was out of control. He will certainly put on quite a show for his home-town fans.

The Opener (2): John Roman feat. Golden Gloves, Fri. @StrangeLove

The electroTO favorite, and London (Ontario) native, John Roman will be lurking on College street Friday night, at no other venue than StrangeLove. With a growing assortment of original productions, there is a very good chance you’ll be exposed to exclusive material. Roman is joined by another local tandem, namely, Golden Gloves who we’ve seen open for both MSTRKRFT and Felix Cartal. This will be a solid alterntive for your Friday evening if you have something against CiRCA.

The Opener (3): Meech, Thurs. @ StrangeLove

What better way to kick off your weekend than by sharing your Thursday evening with one of Toronto’s most talented up-and-coming DJ’s– Meech. Equipped with his widely acclaimed smasher “Bottom of the Fourth”, Meech has shown a knack for dominating crowds across Southern Ontario. Fresh off a series of gigs in So-Cal, Meech will certainly have a couple new tricks to share with the StrangeLove faithful.
