Nasty Nav

Today, it is with great pleasure that we are unveiling our third annual Producing For Presents charity EP, a yearly holiday initiative which enlists our most beloved local DJs to produce compositions of electronic dance music, and sell them in an attempt to raise money for a charitable cause. We crafted this idea way back in 2009, executed the project again in 2010, and here we are today, with arguably the strongest line-up yet. Like the two preceding years, all proceeds will be donated to the Heart House Hospice, a local charity which will ultimately use the donations to purchase Christmas presents for children in less fortunate circumstances.

Incredible and infinite thank yous must go out to our talented contributors including Max & Zach of Prince Club, Meech, John Roman, Todd & Will of Tsuka, Gold’N'Grams, Poupon, Gaunt, Colin Alexander, Vlsonn, and our two mysterious festive contributors, Sugarplum Fairies and Saddam Antler. Again your tireless work has paid immediate dividends, and we’re excited to see how much money we can raise this year, after coming within dollars of 1000 last year. Also, special shouts to the likes of Michel Fournier (Meech), Ben Rosenberg (Poupon) and John Roman, who have all contributed in P4P001 right through to P4P003 — endless gratitude for your donations.

For the third year in succession, Nasty Nav and the folks at Wrongbar have been kind enough to open their doors to us and host the annual EP release party on Saturday December 17th. The docket of artists looks more of a Toronto-based festival line-up rather than a one-off, but you certainly won’t see us complaining. Vouchers to download the EP will be made available on the night of the event, but we highly suggest you check out our Bandcamp page where you can purchase the entire collection for a minimum of $15 via PayPal. Your donation can be infinite.

Tracklist:

01 SADDAM ANTLER // Dreidhell (Original Mix)
02 POUPON // Pimpin’s Easy (Original Mix)

inTORview: Brodinski

February 2, 2010

Yes, yes, ladies and gentlemen, we here at electroTO are proud to announce a new segment set to grace our space, and we honestly believe that it will offer insights into the electronic music industry that can seldom be found anywhere else. Most of us are well aware of the talent that comes through our beloved city, but our InTORview segment will provide an exclusive, deeply personal look at the top DJ/Producer talents that descend upon our borough. And our inaugural edition, really couldn’t be much bigger. Here is our sit-down with Louis Brodinski:

So how has your latest trip to North America been? Work or play?

It’s been pretty good. It was not really a tour. It was like three weeks in LA for work, but after that, my agent found some gigs, and said you have your friend from Philly who wants you to play, your friend Ryne in Toronto who wants you to play, as well as a gig in Montreal. So I said, okay I’ll take it. I’m coming back in March in Miami, with Erol, Boys Noize, DJ Mehdi, Aeroplane. Yeaaa… it’s going to be good.

In playing your style of techno, how do you find the difference in crowd response from Europe to North America?

The club couture in North America is totally different, but it’s a really good thing for us too. In Europe it’s a real business. Every club, I come, I open as the invite DJ, and every weekend it’s a good party; the crowd is really into it. But here, we need to work, like, we need to come, and come back, and come back, and come back again. You know? Even for me it’s really difficult because I have no album or nothing like that, like Boys Noize for example. For Alex, it’s pretty good because he has his image, his label, his project, his albums, he has two albums right now, and he’s come here, and people go to see him. One, because he’s a good DJ, and two,  you can hear tracks from an album. You know what I mean? Like only the geeks and the nerd can know everything that I play [...] But it’s cool (haha).

People know you for your close friendship and production relationship with Yuksek. Can you speak about your relationship with him, and are you two still as close in the studio?

I think we are the exact same today. When we can work together, we do. But for example, I have a mixtape to do, I have a CD to do, I have a remix to do for Miami. I’m in North America right now, coming back for only two days in France, play, and then go off to Japan after having only one week off. Then after it’s Maimi… like wow. It’s a lot.

We heard about a collaboration with You, Djedjotronic, Noob and Harvard Bass. Tell us!

Yes, we do a track with Noob, Djedjotronic, Harvard Bass and me. Yea but, like now it’s close to the end, with Noob and Djedjo. But we will definitely be doing something for Miami, I think.

You just named a couple of your close DJ friends. Who’s the craziest? Who parties hardest?

Ohh no Victor (Harvard Bass). Victor is the craziest. He’s so funny. Even Noob and Djedjo too, but they are very clever. They work a lot. Yea but like, all good guys.

From other interviews we’ve heard that you’ve been getting better at doing your own production. Do you ever see yourself producing on your own, without a collaborator?

No. It’s just like I’m not a big fan of being in the studio and working on my own song. But when I’m with somebody, it’s really funny, and we can do something different. [...] If I’m working on something I really like, I need to be in the studio for like a week, working on like exactly the same track. I need to be with somebody in the studio. After two years of working with somebody, I’m just seeing. I know what I’m seeing. I totally understand it. I need some more time, but I think it’s going to be good.

It’s clear that you’re a huge fan of hip-hop, as depicted in your blog SmokeMachine. Are you doing anything to pursue that, or is it just a personal hobby?

I think the real problem with hip-hop… when you want to be a hip-hop producer, you need to produce like 25 beats a day. And we produce a track every 4 months, so like, it’s difficult. The rap business is totally different from the electronic business. But yea it’s interesting, like I will do some stuff. Some people are interested in it. I’m doing a rap mixtape, just for myself, just so I can say, at this time, I listened to this music. I don’t care what people think. I just do it for me. [...] In Canada and US, hip-hop is big. Half of the tracks I put on my blog, everybody knows. In Europe, it’s like nobody cares about hip-hop music.

When it comes to producing techno, who would be the one producer you would want to see yourself working with?

I would say Yuksek is the best for that. Yea, for me, because, he’s an engineer and a friend. And working with a friend is just the best for me. [What about Soulwax?] Yeaa, Soulwax are good, but they’re really busy too, you know?

You appeared on Teki and Orgasmic’s ‘Sound Pellegrino’ label last year, any chance you appear on some other emerging labels, like Mowgli’s ‘Deadfish’, or the like?

I like Deadfish. I think it’s a really good label. We just decide… For example, Mowgli asked me, “Do You want to work with Camel? I think it’s gonna be a good idea for him.” And, I think it’s gonna be a good idea for him too, and I like what Camel is doing at the moment, he is really on fire. So I said, ahh, why not!? And it’s a project, between another one. It’s just like, cool… But for Teki, he approach me maybe a year and a half ago, and said “Listen man, I maybe want to do a label, have you got something?” And I said, yea I got something, and it was the track ‘Boogieman’, an old one, really. Then I told my friend Guilliam (The Shoes) that I wanted to do something, and we did ‘Sha Shtil’, and ‘Casablanco’ was like two weeks after. And it was with Yuksek too, yea. It was pretty good. It was good for me. People liked it, people reacted pretty well.

In previous interviews you mentioned that The Shoes and Monsieur Monsieur are big acts to look out for. Anyone else that you have your eye on in 2010?

Hmm. I think a little guy from Belgium, named Highbloo. He send me just all his stuff, and the last two is just… (gesture suggesting craziness). Yea, yea he’s really good. And he’s a nice guy. He send me all his stuff and says “okay what you think, what do you think?”. I just want to see what’s next for him. He’s a French guy from Belgium. You know how they have two parts in Belgium? But yea he’s really good, I really like his stuff. And another guy, a French guy called French Fries [Ohh yes the Arma EP]. Yeaaa, that’s really good. The BeatauCue remix is the best, and even the original too. And the sound, I think it’s really good today. It’s like that minimal kind of dutch house. It works really well… I remember end of January of 2009, I was so excited about music, with the ‘Spraycan EP’, ‘Nadastrom’, and stuff like that. And today, I’m listening to some different stuff. Like this Dutch guy named Oliver Twizt, sent some stuff to Mad Decent. I was in LA, with Diplo, and I was listening to that, and it’s going to be really big.

As far as your new releases for this year, you have Arnold Classics coming out, and…?

Yes, Arnold Classics is coming out on Sinden’s new label called ‘Grizzly’. Yea, Sinden ask me from long time ago, “He says ya ya. I’m doing a label. Give me a track or something.” So I give him this one, and I said find some remixers. I think one is from Toronto? Egyptrixx? He’s really good. And he just did a remix for a band called Cubic Zirconia, and it’s an amazing remix. I just said to Sinden, let’s ask him to do it.

You’re a wristwatch guy, how many watches do you have?

I have 25 watches, but I only wear 25. I have many more than that. [Do you have a favorite?] I don’t have any favorites. It’s exactly like music, I change all the time.

As far as DJs you look up to, who are the best you’ve seen lately?

Mehdi is amazing. Who I’ve seen recently… Jack Beats is really good. He’s a party DJ. Diplo is amazing, as always. Who else… [Alex, obviously?] Yea, but, pfff, he’s already a king, you don’t have to (haha). Everybody plays different stuff now. I cannot wait to see the Hard party. Between Aeroplane, Erol, Busy P… and, oh man.

Last question, you play a lot of material from cutting edge artists, would you consider yourself to be a musical trendsetter?

Umm, I think a test-maker. I hope to be one. I hope to be one for everybody, not just for those who read the blog and forum! (haha)

Thanks for your time Louis!

What’s Good Wednesday!?

November 25, 2009

White Vinyl

This week’s What’s Good Wednesday is highlighted by one of the most prolific Saturday nights in modern memory for our dear city. It all starts with Sharam , who is one half of the house music legend Deep Dish, spinnig at the always-epic Guvernment. In addition, your further options include the very talented scratch-master DJ Klever at Blvd Room, Trouble & Bass star Udachi at The Social, and our local-favorite Rynecologist, fresh off his Ed Banger release, spinning at Wrongbar.

We cannot stress this enough, this Saturday’s bill is absolutely crazy.

Afrodisiac

August 7, 2009

Picture 4

Last night, we were jammin’ it up at Skybar nightclub, down at the Guvernment complex, where we had the pleasure of checking the Crookers live in action. The evening’s opener was none other than Mr. Nasty Nav, one of the GTA’s finest club owners, DJs, and all-around good dudes. As Nasty was doing his due diligence pumping up the bubbling Skybar crowd, one of his biggest drops was the track we have for you today — the Afrojack remix of Moombah.

The Dutch-born Afrojack has blown up since 2008, when the track “Drop Down” sent shockwaves through the electronic world. His remix of Moombah also appeared in Bordello’s July top-10 chart over a month ago, and since then we’ve been going bonkers over it. The track features some vintage snares and congas, in addition to a blaring synth that is undeniably rude.

No headliner this week, but still a whole bunch of talent.

The Opener: electroTO Presents TRASH, Fri. @ Augusta House

Friday evening marks a major milestone in electroTO‘s young and illustrious history — and it goes by the name of TRASH.  The Augusta House (located in the heart of the Kensington village) will welcome the trio of Stonewall Trackson, The Vamp and Bordello to provide the musical accompaniment for the evening. The event has been tabbed TRASH: Opening House Party, and will hopefully be the first of many successful electroTO parties under the TRASH label. The evening will be absolutely ridiculous, there is very little doubt — and with 4 dollar drinks and a 5 dollar cover, you really can’t go wrong.

The Opener: Barletta, John Roman, Conor Cutz & Real Talk, Thurs. @ Wrongbar

Familiar faces descend upon Wrongbar on your Thursday night. Four of the sharpest up-and-comers in the T-dot electro scene come together for a night of debauchery and some of the hardest hitting electronic music on the planet. Also, with Barletta and Mr. Roman present, you can be assured that exclusives will be flying around like a leaf on a windy day.

The Opener: Motor, Thurs. @ The Social

This week’s version of Social Thursday’s brings the duo of Mr. No and Bryan Black into town — who are more commonly known as Motor. Both 4Play and ADD have said it beautifully: “The duo have remixed the likes of Marilyn Manson, Throbbing Gristle and most recently, Depeche Mode as well as remixing the theme song for the final Godzilla film, Final Wars, in a collaboration with Felix Da Housecat. The MOTOR duo are also known for their work under the alias XLOVER whose album, Pleasure & Romance, was released on DJ Hell’s Gigolo Records last year…” and it goes on and on. Bottom line, don’t miss out on this one.

The Opener: Zeds Dead & Medley, Thurs. @ StrangeLove

StrangeLove opens it’s doors to a pair of producers who have been blowing up as of late, namely Zeds Dead. The Toronto-based duo perfectly fuse vulgur dubstep basslines with hard-hitting breaks, creating a top-notch brand of dubstep music. Their newest track “Summer Grime” is an absolute masterpiece, and we highly recommend checking out their Myspace for a listen, right HERE.

The Opener: Nasty Nav, Meech & Golden Gloves, Sat. @ Wrongbar

Three of the Toronto-area’s best DJs go at it Saturday at Wrongbar. We had the pleasure of catching our good friends Meech and Golden Gloves just last week opening for Congorock, and of course, they dismantled the place. If Nasty gets on the decks, prepare yourselves for an always stellar job as well. We will never get tired of these guys.

time_festival

The Headliner: Embrace Presents Time Festival, Sat. @ Sound Academy

Talk about an event that need no sales pitch at all — the 2009 Time Festival, hosted by Embrace, at the Sound Academy. The bill is absolutely packed with world-class electro personalities, you can peep the event poster above if you don’t believe us. A-Trak, Mehdi, Felix Cartal, Don Rimini etc. etc. will all be spinning non-stop exclusives, showcasing their undeniable skills. Anyone who is anyone in the Toronto electronic scene will be in attendance Saturday, and we highly recommend you do yourself a favour and attend. We will be there in full force, tearing up the d-floor and providing you with the track ID play-by-play, on our trusty Twitter account, which you can check out right HERE.

The Opener: Congorock, Thurs. @ The Social

On any other weekend, a visit from the Italian-native Congorock would certainly be crowned the week’s glorified ‘Headliner’, but it just so happens that his appearance falls on the same weekend as TIME. Such is life. Regardless, The Social is the undisputed place to be on your Thursday night, and that has been verified by our good friend and Toronto promoter, Mr. Cody Lekush. We’ve kept a close eye on Congorock ever since his debut single “Runark”, we’ve watched him explode under the watchful eye of Bob Cornelius Rifo of the Bloody Beetroots, and we look forward to going buck with him on Thursday.

The Opener: Steve Porter & JELO, Fri. @ Footwork

The weekend’s final warm up for the TIME festival will showcase international house/techno dee-jay, Steve Porter, alongside Toronto-native JELO. The New York-born Porter dropped the album ‘Homegrown’ in 2005, a release that propelled him onto the global stage and contributed to DJ Times anointing him as one of “America’s Best DJs”. Meanwhile, JELO has ripped local events for years, and blew up after his widely regarded collabo with Deadmau5 entitled “The Reward Is Cheese” — again, a very solid bill.

Enjoy this weekend’s festivities everyone. It’s going to be wild.

The Headliner: John Dahlback, Sat. @ Footwork

Talk about flying under the radar. One of the biggest names in house music is making his way to Footwork, to treat the Toronto faithful to the finest in Swedish house. John Dahlback’s latest material includes his Turbo 064 Maximus EP release with his brother Jesper. The two track EP is an absolute treat, and is a very good indication of the quality of material that will be pumping through the speakers Saturday night. Also, keep your ear open for the world-wide smasher “Out There”, featuring Basto! (aka Lazy Jay).

The Opener: Hatiras, Fri. @ CiRCA

When your name appears in Fake Blood’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix more than once, you know you’re probably a half-decent producer. Friday, inside the always stellar CiRCA Randomland, Canadian-boy Hatiras will be wrecking the discotek (as John Roman would say). Not only does Hatiras have albums and Juno awards to his name, but in 2003 he started his own “Blow Media” Recording label. Be sure to check out this ever-rising Canadian electronic star on your Friday night.

The Opener: Grum and Barletta, Thurs. @ Wrongbar

In yet another big night for Nasty Nav’s Wrongbar, Scotland’s Grum will be in town, bringing his long list of acclaimed singles to share with all those willing to bust-a-move. Producing a sound that embodies the very essence of European electro, you would be silly to miss out on Grum’s performance. In a brief side-note, local boy Barletta, coming off his widely acclaimed NXNE performance, will be an entertaining opener, given that his track lists are completely unpredictable, and always refreshing.

The Opener: The FranDiscos, Sat. @ Club [v]

Finally, if it’s the obscure and unfamiliar you’re looking for, we have just what you need. Two brothers, Andrew and John, from the GTA, have returned to their stomping ground, Club [V], for the summer months. These gifted wax-scratchers will complement an incredible venue, nestled in the heart of Yorkville, just North of the downtown core. Although you may be thinking John Dahlback on your Saturday, if you’re looking for an upscale spot, with a little less hooplah, and some top-notch spinning, check these boys out. And show ‘em some love!

Fake Blood @ Wrongbar

Today’s edition of WGW marks the beginning of the NXNE festival in Toronto, sensibly named after the compass quadrants “North By Northeast”.  This is essentially the Canadian version of the film/music/culture festival that takes place every year in Texas, by the name of SXSW. What does this mean for the electronic aficionados in the Toronto area? Well let me tell you, it has provided us with one of the strongest weekly event line-ups in recent memory.

The Headliner: Fake Blood, Nasty Nav and Barletta, Sat. @ Wrongbar

Fake Blood exploded on the scene the day Steve Aoki dropped his Essential Mix on BBC’s Radio One. On that day, Mars became much more than a red planet—it became the track of summer 2008. Then there was his Toronto appearance this past winter, where he absolutely blew the doors off of Wrongbar, and left resident DJ Nasty Nav playing his “Stuck On Repeat” remix for months. Yikes, with opening acts by Mr. Nav himself, as well as local-boy Barletta, Saturday will be off the hook, no questions asked.

The Opener: Bird Peterson, St. Mandrew and Guests, Thurs. @ The Social

NXNE’s high-power electro line-up kicks off with Bird Peterson at The Social, a venue which is infamous for its big-time sound system, in its not-so-big main room. Regardless, this doesn’t bode well for your eardrums, especially when Mr. Peterson drops his earth-shattering banger “The Essence”.  Peterson will be joined by the very skilled St. Mandrew, cousin of MSTRKRFT’s JFK. (Note: We incorrectly suggested that Bird Peterson was on the Dim Mak recording label– totally our bad– thanks for keeping us sharp)

The Opener: Klever, Fri. @ CiRCA

Friday night, CiRCA’s Randomland will feature Klever, a world-renowned scratch DJ from the United States who will make a point of opening his bag of tricks and shredding some serious vinyl throughout the night. Coming from a notorious hip-hop background in the mean streets of Atlanta, you can expect Klever to drop a diverse track arrangement with a Baskin Robbins-esque assortment of flavors.

Tiga

In what will become a weekly phenomena at electroTO, we will be providing our loyal following with a “What’s Good Wednesday” segment, exactly like the one you see here. These specific posts will survey the ground-shattering events that are scheduled for the weekend ahead in our wonderful city.  We will then use our best judgment/psychic powers to provide you with the “Headliner”, or the event that you simply cannot miss. This week’s attempt will likely be the easiest edition in our existence, given that the Turbo Recording all-stars are in town. So without further adieu, What’s Good Wednesday!?

The Headliner: Tiga feat. Thomas Von Party and Milano, Fri. @ CiRCA

If this is not one of your most anticipated events of the summer, you need to shift your priorities immediately and make it one. This friday, the golden-boy of Turbo Recordings, Tiga, will descend upon Toronto’s CiRCA nightclub accompanied  by Thomas Von Party and Milano. Forums, Blogs and Viral Videos have all been raving about Tiga’s performance during his world tour. With well-documented exclusive drops such as Proxy’s “8000″ , Brodinski and Noob’s “Peanut Club”, and the Proxy remix of Zombie Nation’s “Shottieville”, the set-list promises to leave you awe-struck.

The Opener (1): Shit La Merde feat. Nasty Nav and Famous Players, Sat. @Wrongbar

If you have any left in the tank after your incredulous Friday night at CiRCA, you could always head down to Queen West on Saturday evening and hit up some local talent at Wrongbar. Shit La Merde hails from the Toronto area, and is coming off a huge gig at Sneaky Dee’s on May the 29th that apparently was out of control. He will certainly put on quite a show for his home-town fans.

The Opener (2): John Roman feat. Golden Gloves, Fri. @StrangeLove

The electroTO favorite, and London (Ontario) native, John Roman will be lurking on College street Friday night, at no other venue than StrangeLove. With a growing assortment of original productions, there is a very good chance you’ll be exposed to exclusive material. Roman is joined by another local tandem, namely, Golden Gloves who we’ve seen open for both MSTRKRFT and Felix Cartal. This will be a solid alterntive for your Friday evening if you have something against CiRCA.

The Opener (3): Meech, Thurs. @ StrangeLove

What better way to kick off your weekend than by sharing your Thursday evening with one of Toronto’s most talented up-and-coming DJ’s– Meech. Equipped with his widely acclaimed smasher “Bottom of the Fourth”, Meech has shown a knack for dominating crowds across Southern Ontario. Fresh off a series of gigs in So-Cal, Meech will certainly have a couple new tricks to share with the StrangeLove faithful.
