Album Onslaught

June 29, 2011

It’s only the tail-end of June, and the docket already seems full for 2011 album contenders, especially considering Azari & III’s album, as well as Proxy’s album are on the horizon. I thought I’d take a moment just to run down a couple of the latest LPs that have made their way to market, and have stayed in heavy rotation here at electroTO.

The one that several local connoisseurs are talking about is the self-titled album from SBTRKT, coming out on the hugely popular UK label, Young Turks, just two days ago. Really can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed this fresh approach to future/UK funky. The production is nothing short of brilliant, taking tribal elements to totally new bpms, blending them with perfect leads, startling percussion, and a whole array of talented vocalists.

Perhaps the one that has stolen our hearts completely and sits as one of the frontrunners for top-5 contention is Parabolas by John Tejada, coming from the always on-point Kompakt Records family. Psychedelic melodies are the clincher here, with each space-bound vestige taking you to some next unexplored planet of experimental techno. No question some will be left scratching their heads, but for everyone of those, there will be someone clutching both sides of their cranium, overwhelmed by the brilliance.

Another album that has flown somewhat under the radar is the funkified 11-track effort by French electronic juggernaut, Para One, under his Slice & Soda project, featuring American vocalist San Serac. This one is all things French chic house, with alluring disco grooves the whole way through, coming together seamlessly with Serac’s voice on almost every exchange. This retro-fit journey is an unofficial homage to the disco fever days of the 1970s, borrowing from the proven formula discovered by Chromeo.

Slice & Soda – More Crazy

The last of the albums we’ll address today is the collaboration between two of the most brilliant men in UK electronic production at the moment, that being Damon Kirkham & Alex Green (aka Jon Convex & Boddika). These two, you may know, are the duo behind Instra:Mental, who happened to have released their debut album entitled Resolution 653 under their own Nonplus+ imprint, with recent and upcoming drops from Lol, Actress, Skream, Lowtec and Martyn. This album represents the pinnacle for the year so far, and effectively stands as the standard upon which forthcoming albums will be measured.

Proxy Goes HARD

April 4, 2010

As we alluded to yesterday, Mr. Evgeny Pozharnov aka Proxy played in New York City at HARD Fest with notable names such as Boys Noize, Major Lazer, and a long list of talent. We scoured the interweb this morning trying to provide you with some of the footage, and we managed to strike gold. Peep the video above and find out how Proxy’s North American debut went — try to control your envy of those who were in attendance.

[Edit: April 5, 2010]

Proxy at Hardfest NYC! from todd Schlattman on Vimeo.

In the words of Proxy: “New York. Atlanta. Boston. Coachella. These are the places and alternative music festivals I was taught to hate as a child. It is difficult to see them as anything other than targets, and I will treat them as such. New York. Rubble. Atlanta. Ruins. Boston. Ash. Coachella. Extinction. [...] I eat a cigarette. I prepare to wrestle your winds of freedom to the ground. I cannot allow you to live inside your skulls for much longer.”

Today (April 3) marks a pretty significant day in history for those with particularly good taste in music. Today is the first time ever Turbo’s Proxy will be landing and playing on North American soil. Unfortunately for us, he isn’t making a stop off in Toronto, but he is making stops in New York, Atlanta, Boston and Coachella. His arrival here marks the start of what will be a huge year for Proxy and his fans. First of all he has the Vibrate Remixes EP coming out in June (obviously on Turbo Recordings) with huge remixes from Noob, Sound of Stereo and the Bloody Beetroots and then his long awaited yet extremely elusive album dropping later this year too.

In order to celebrate this momentous occasion, we’ve got an exclusive for you from our good friend and spectacularly talented producer John Roman. Like Proxy, JR is another producer set to have a huge year, with his remix of Nadastrom being released later this month and some other big originals and remixes in the pipeline. It seems as if it’s just from strength to strength with this guy. John Roman took Proxy’s 8000 and renewed the joy we felt when first listening to it by adding pounding drums along with some other bits and bobs – completely transforming the track while still retaining the initial obscurity of it which makes it such a great tune. The combination of the two separate styles really comes out well in the end with a remix that’s more housey and dance floor friendly.

Still Waiting

February 17, 2010

In a interview in late 2009, Russian super producer Proxy mentioned that he really wanted to work with a Russian producer and friend, Marseille in whom he saw a lot of potential. Some may notice the name from the remix that he did for Proxy’s Raven and for the more recent Who Are You remix he did. In that same interview, Proxy also mentioned that he wanted to start a label and that Marseille was was one of the guys that he wanted to be a part of that. The contents of that interview got swept to the very back of my mind until recently when I happened to stumble across Marseille’s UFO Attack EP on Mako Records a label based in Moscow with only one release to its name. That’s right – Proxy’s label.

As part of the label’s solid debut record, Goodbye is the third (and longest) track on the EP and is my personal favorite. Having such huge support from Proxy I’d expect Marsielle to be all about distortion and bleeding ears but I was pleasantly surprised when this track turned in the opposite direction. The emphasis is on a clean synth line, making it a very coherant, danceable track. The other two tracks on the EP are definitely more busy and high energy and are worth a look too. The 8 bit bloops of Goodbye are right out of an old school video game – giving a nice touch of nostalgia if nothing else.

Invaders Must Die

November 28, 2009

Proxy

Like the rest of the world, we understand the insatiable love affair with Turbo Recordings’ Russian juggernaut, Evgeny Pozharnov, aka Proxy. His militaristic-assault-techno is abrasive in the most enjoyable way and has been battle-tested by virtually anyone worth mentioning in the DJ world. In an exclusive interview with Proxy, done by Dazed Digital, he goes on to explain that his decimating brand of electro arose from the hard life he has led in Russia — God only knows what human trial or tribulation could have resulted in “Raven”, but we’ll take his word for it.

The Proxy track we have for you today is a remix of Prodigy’s “Invaders Must Die” — a vocal that almost seems too fitting for a remix by this Russian revolutionary. Interestingly, this rendition has some serious Drum & Bass accents, and for that reason, it may turn-off just as many people as it turns on. In typical Proxy fashion, the track drops like a WMD, with long-range synths that seemingly have the ability to melt minds. Enjoy.

Bloody Beetroots

Don’t ask me how we have yet to feature the now world-renowned Italian electronic duo, The Bloody Beetroots in this space, but we are proud to declare that the time has finally come — and only one question remains, “who the **** are you?”. That is the word-for-word (absolutely addictive) vocal from the Beetroot’s remix of Proxy’s “Who Are You?”, the precise track we’re boosting today.

As you can undoubtedly imagine, the the Proxy-Beetroots collabo combines the drop-happy Beetroots sound, with the noise-shredding massacre that we’ve come to love from Mr. Proxy. With looming albums from both of these guys, you should be amped to have a taste of things to come from these electro heavyweights. Peep the 320 below and let us know what you think — we’re on-board.

Picture 8

Everyone involved closely with music can tell you that there is always one person, artist, song etc that has influenced them more musically than anything else. That person for me is The Vamp, the man who introduced me to the beautiful and mysterious world of electronic music that now is such a large part of who I am. There is truly no man greater than this and everyone to have ever been graced by his presence would gladly testify to this. He is a God among men, a punisher of turntables and a musical encyclopedia. Most importantly of all, today he turns 21.

To commemorate this jubilant event I have assembled a small collection of songs that remind me most of The Vamp for your nostalgic listening pleasure. While I was initially going to try explain the significance of each song, I think that’s something that only the man himself could truly understand and therefore I will let the music speak for itself. For those who do not know these are practically the anthems when The Vamp and I spin together, and have been for some time now. Of course there is the song that made me fall in love with it all; Morgan Page’s remix of Over and Under, but my immense CD collection is making it hard to find at the moment. So just so you know that one was supposed to be up there. Thank you for all that you have done for me and for being a great man in word, deed and in music.

Zombielicious Redux

June 11, 2009

Zombielcious Remixes

It is difficult to remain one hundred percent objective, or detached, in writing this post, given that I have publicly endorsed “Zombielicious” as album of the year — and worship the ground that Zombie Nation walks on. Regardless of my inherent bias, the fact is, on June 24th Turbo Recordings will be releasing Turbo 065, aka the Zombielicious Remixes album, which includes the likes of Proxy, Milano and Shadow Dancer.

This has been one of the most anticipated Turbo EP releases in recent memory, stemming mainly from the undeniable talent on the record. We had the pleasure of hearing both the Proxy remix of Shottieville,  as well as the Shadow Dancer remix of Mystery Meat Affair dropped live by none other than Tiga six days ago, and they were indelible. Just below, we have a decent version (not 320k) of the Arveene & Misk treatment of “Worth It”. Though it’s not on the same level as the Proxy or Shadow Dancer work, it definitely warrants a listen. Most importantly, dial in to the Turbo website and buy the EP on the 24th, right HERE.
