Sound Pellegrino

Congaloid

November 14, 2011

The man above was once coined as the ‘the prophetic re-unifier of underground house’ by the Sound Pellegrino patriarchs. He proudly hails from the Italian capital, though he is now based in east-London, and it’s pertinent to note that his production is arguably as timeless as the eternal city itself. His name is Stefano Ritteri, but you may know him as Solo, having dropped works on imprints like Dirtybird, Sound Pellegrino, Deadfish (et al.) — and today, he is proudly cutting the ribbon on his very own digital label, entitled, Congaloid.

We had an opportunity to sit down with the man himself just this past weekend, and you could absolutely feel the passion and excitement behind the project. We’ll be the first to admit that house music has been in a state of flux. It almost seems as though only the Crosstown Rebels have been getting any attention as of late, and it’s getting a tad monotonous. This fresh take on modern house music will provide a promising outlet for a very intriguing talent-base. A collection of artists which Solo has hand-picked, both because of their similar vision, and for their incredibly divergent styles and nuances.

The first release features an original piece by the label boss himself, and a straight-forward reinterpretation by a couple Roman kids that go by Doomwork. The scouting report on Doomwork checks-out as well; these kids have been producing for quite some time, and go about pressing their own vinyls, a small self-sustaining project based out of the Italian capital. The original titled Alki Bamba is pure sex at 126bpm, bringing us back to the golden age of Latin-inspired, proper groove. The melodic sub-bass will steal your heart, as it did ours, when heard in the right environment, and the exceptionally long breakdown could do with another sixty-four bars in our honest opinion. Check the low bit-rate preview below, and do yourself a favour by buying this one from beatport.

Night Voyage

November 12, 2011

The ever-evolving visionaries behind Sound Pellegrino are continuing to flex their empire’s muscle, with a new line of merch designed by BIG O himself, the founder and head of design at “Tokyo’s greatest extremist fashion house”, Phenomenon. In addition to their strides in new and trendy garments, Teki & Orgasmic are mirroring this in their forthcoming extended-play releases, baptizing their Night Voyage crossover series late last month with Bok Bok & Tom Trago, and looking onward to some very lofty catalogue inclusions. Stay tuned on their blog for the news & updates.

Podcast Perfection

May 27, 2011

While you were sleeping, our friend Meech was taking over Paris by way of the Sound Pellegrino Podcast. If you haven’t heard already, our good friends Michel Fournier & Todd Schlattman aka Meati assembled the latest mix (the 26th installment) for the Parisian digital super-label run by Teki Latex & Orgasmic. The Podcast is available through itunes, as well as the refurbished Sound Pellegrino website, and features a tracklist chocked full of Meati & Meech production, as well as a steady stream of local talent. Previous podcast sessions have included mini mixes from renowned names like Renaissance Man and French Fries, and now you can add our favorite duo to the list.

The mix itself was recorded at the humble studio of our good friend Doctor Vince, amongst the entire electroTO crew, where the ambiance was fueled by unremitting excitement, and an endless supply of prune aperitif. Plainly speaking, this is a giant step for Toronto’s notoriety on the electronic map; one of the biggest and most relevant podcasts in the world, featuring two familiar faces. Check out the mix below, and keep an eye out for names like Zuluhuupz, John Roman, Urulu, Milt Mortez & more.

Tracklist:

01 Milt Mortez “Astoria” [CDr]
02 Urulu “So What” [Get Flavor]
03 Zuluhuupz “Papaya” [CDr]
04 John Roman “Akabna” (Meati’s Bushweed Remix) [Idiot House]
05 Meati “Air Jamaica” [CDr]
06 Meati & Meech “Favela” [Discobelle]
07 Nick Monaco “Boom Soul” (Meati & Meech Remix) [Demento Mori]

Bellegrino

March 24, 2011

Just a quick little shout out to some of the most important, influential and genuine people in our beloved scene — of course, I’m referring to the big boys behind the labels Sound Pellegrino & Discobelle. The names include Julian (Teki) and Cedric (Orgasmic) of SP, as well as Nick & Martin (Discobelle DJs). We had the pleasure of getting to know both of these cliques at the Bellegrino event from last night at Electric Pickle, and we seriously cannot say enough about how stand-up these gentlemen were. Some of the highlights of the evening include a truly memorable one-hour set by Youngunz artist French Fries, as well as a back-to-back hip hop set with Brodinski and Mikix The Cat to close out the evening around 5am.

Tonight, it’s more of the same with the Delicatessen Party as well as the HARD Miami party. A couple of the names being thrown around for both parties include Simian Mobile Disco, Tiga, Diplo, Brodinski, Benga & Rory Philips. Catch up with you guys soon.

La Dernière Séance

March 15, 2011

This evening became eerily somber after we read this write-up from Institubes’ label manager and A&R boss Jean-René Etienne (via Emile Shahidi) on behalf of the entire Institubes’ upper brass. On the surface, the most disturbing fact to be drawn from his words is that Institubes has been hereby dissolved as an electronic music label — startling considering the mass talent-base they possess. But what’s perhaps more troubling is Etienne’s stark account of the music industry today, and the poison that saturates music politics. He paints a very disturbing picture that essentially calls-out unethical consumer behavior, problematic label etiquette, and the plain injustices of modernism. Among other things, he goes on to say:

“I could write ten pages about the realities and difficulties of the music business but you’ll only get about two paragraphs and not much whining. We never lived those halcyon days some industry elders tend to rave about. We always moved through a post-apocalyptic, terminally pauperized landscape, complete with irradiated A&R zombies and mutated eyeless bloggers. It’s always been a bit of an uphill battle. But it got worse and worse. At first it was fun to figure out ways to get people to check out our music. But once that’s done and you have something resembling an audience, it becomes apparent that this is not really your job. Your job is to reconcile the public with the very idea of buying records. All the power to you if you can bear it.”

This will surely send a shockwave throughout the entire industry, and we’re really eager to hear some of the responses from some of the more respected voices in the scene. Stay tuned, as I’m sure their will be no shortage of press here. What we can tell you at this point is there seems to be a whole lot of hype surrounding Marble at the moment. Stay tuned for more info.

What You Do

March 14, 2011

If you just so happened to tune into our latest edition of etoLIVE last Wednesday, you would have heard us rave over the latest remix from Dutchman Tom Trago, which appeared on Sound Pellegrino’s latest gift to the world. Indeed, this remix that Trago threw together for the High Power Boys opened our eyes to his extensive catalog of releases, and we must concede that he’s definitely not a one-shot wonder by any stretch — this Amsterdam-based DJ/producer is very skilled in both crafts, and has been for some time now.

The piece from Trago that we want to share with you today is a cut off his three track album-teaser EP which dropped just over a week ago on Rush Hour Records. The album itself will be titled Iris and is expected to drop in early April 2011 on that very same label. Believe it or not, after some timely digging, we discovered that this is actually Trago’s sophmore album, and frankly speaking, if this three track taste-test is any indication, you will almost certainly see Trago’s name in our top LP rankings at the conclusion of 2011.

The specific tune that we’re dishing is titled What You Do and features authentic elements of classic Chicago house, refabricated into something both alluring, jackin’, and altogether fresh. The spoken word by Tyree Cooper may be a tad curious for some listeners, but we’re willing to deal with it given the magnitude of the ambient pad progression on which it rides. This one is big.

Watching You

February 8, 2011

We’re always very interested to see what’s going on at Sound Pellegrino headquarters, keeping close tabs on their forthcoming releases, while staying up to date with Teki’s always intriguing Twitter account. By now, you’ll know that for the entirety of 2009, this label could do no wrong, catapulting names like Renaissance Man, Momma’s Boy, Harvard Bass, Douster and Gucci Vump to the forefront of electronic music, repeatedly shocking the world with a series of incredible EPs, exclusively for digital download.

In more recent times; however, the releases haven’t quite tickled our fancy in quite the same way. Maybe we’re simply not adjusting well to the evolution of forward-thinking house music, or maybe they’re just overthinking the forwardness altogether. In our estimation, it’s more of the latter, but I’m sure Teki and Orgasmic would gladly refute that.

Next on the short-term agenda for the Institubes sub-label, is an EP by German duo Savage Skulls, whom I was surprised to discover do quite a bit of unheralded ghost producing — including work on Robyn‘s album, as well as work on Carli and Marcus Price’s “Matt Bira Kvinnor Weed” EP. Not bad side gigs in addition to their release on Dubsided, and of course their work with Douster and Tony Senghore.

Their latest work, set to join the Sound Pellegrino catalog in the coming weeks, is a step in the right direction for all parties involved. Both Caravan and Watching You have quality production finger prints all over them, and the remixes by Jacques Greene and Payme are both really tasteful additions to the release. Greene goes with his typical funked-out future-music touch, will Payme hops of the 303 bandwagon and fashions a pretty stylish acid loop. Check out the entire release below, and comment away.

Gold Jubilee

September 22, 2010

Yesterday, I decided to step outside the ordinary menu. Today however, is a celebration of a label, and a sound, that is right up our alley. A couple days back, Boys Noize Recordings released BNR050, their 50th extended play record, marking the Gold Jubilee of their existence, and how better to make it a memorable release than by enlisting label boss, Mr. Alex Ridha, aka Boys Noize himself.

The two track masterpiece must be considered a split personality EP. The A-side, entitled 1010, is pure and unremitting acid techno with a bassline that could probably inflict bodily injury if heard at the right decibel. It’s dark and belligerent the whole way through, and reminds me of one of Bordello‘s afterhour sets, in one of our finest local darkrooms. Whereas the B-side, entitled Yeah, offers something much different, something much more jubilant, gratified and housey. The tune has some obvious similarities to Puzique’s timeless track Don’t Go with the bassline harmony doing the majority of the work. This one is really easy to listen to, and even easier to fall in love with.

All in all, this is a great opportunity to pause and reflect about the state of electronic music. With Boys Noize Recordings now at fifty EPs in their catalogue, Turbo Recordings on the cusp of 100, and labels like Dirtybird, Made to Play, Deadfish, Sound Pellegrino, Get The Curse, Wolf+Lamb, and others all climbing toward notoriety, it would be silly to suggest that EDM is dead, dying, or the like.
