Torro Torro

Fairly average weekend until you arrive at Saturday evening, with the most notable exchange being a live performance by Mathew Johnson at Footwork, alongside Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, and of course, a very special Jamie Kidd vs. Noah Pred set. Other options on Saturday include a performance by the now reunited kings progressive house, Josh Gabriel & Dave Dresden at Guvernment’s main room, Bicep at Drake Underground, and the valiant return of Azari & III, at Wrongbar.

Friday leaves a bit to be desired in terms of big name pull, so we’d recommend you direct your attention to Saturday evening, with some large scale events covering the entire map of electronic music. Local dubstep heroes Zed’s Dead continue their global dubstep dominance headlining the lastest Digital for their Rudeboy tour, alongside the likes of Drop The Lime, Canblaster & several others, including local acts The Killabits & Torro Torro. Also, established heavyweights like Guy Gerber (Footwork) and Desyn Masielo (The Social) have quietly been booked as well, but our best bet is the Com Truise show which is set to go down at Wrongbar.

As I look outside my snowy window, my mind cannot help but venture two weeks into the future when the eTO crew will descend upon Miami for Ultra. Then I’m forced to snap out of it, because Canadian Music Week is in full flight in our city, with a hectic tasklist for all affiliated with this website. Both Friday and Saturday night are fixed with incredible headliners, Friday offering a Night Slugs label showcase with bossman Bok Bok alongside Girl Unit and Kingdom, while Saturday night will feature a late night affair with one of house music’s biggest — Mr. Jamie Jones. Tune into eTOLive tonight at 10:30 to hear a couple tunes from the Nightslugs family, as well as Jamie Jones.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

February 16, 2011

I write this little blurb with an air of excitement looming, as the second test session of etoLIVE is set to pop off tonight on this very domain around 22:30hr (in, oh, about 45 mins or so). We took a good swing at the whole live radio thing last week (not without a hitch), and we’re confident that we can build upon that inaugural session, with a bundle of fresh tunes, and some hopefully intelligent commentary. During the show, we’ll also take time to talk about some of the events coming up in Toronto this weekend, including timely appearances by Harvard Bass, alongside Torro Torro, Meati, and Meech (Friday @ Mod Club), as well as Zombie Disco Squad, alongside Andrew Ross, and Poupon (Saturday @ The Social).

This weekend kicks off with a resounding clap, nu-disco style, with In Flagranti poised to hit the decks at Wrongbar, and bring the dfloor to a simmer. No doubt this is a rare opportunity to witness one of the unquestioned biggest names in the disco resurgence, made so popular in 2009. The weekend continues with a massive tribute to Toronto’s electronic music scene at The Great Hall (equipped with a tantalizing after-party line-up), as well as a star-studded cast at Mod-Club. Finally, Saturday, the main event  in our humble eyes is the much anticipated release party for Gingy & Bordello’s “Vaporizer” EP. This one has the makings of a serious bender.

Toronto’s NxNE Festival is finally here, and along with the 4am extended drinking license being implemented across all your favorite venues, this weekend will also be rammed with some very notable electronic talent. The action really gets going on Thursday with Junior Boys (playing at The Social), Falty DL (The Drake) and Funkagenda (Cobra), leading up to a Friday evening with Girl Talk (Sound Academy), Huoratron (Wrongbar), and Dada Life (The Social), as well as a huge Saturday with AC Slater, B. Rich, Udachi (The Social), Classixx (The Drake), and of course,  Steve Lawler (Guvernment). Some serious decisions to be made in the coming days, and the best part is, you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Happy NxNE!

In semi-related news (that being the celebration of good music), we have the latest electroTO Summer Sessions Mix now available for download. This edition features the virtually flawless track selection and steadfast ear-to-ear mixing of eTO fan-favorite, Bordello. Although this latest set is, to paraphrase his own suggestion, a tad saturated with above-the-surface material, in actuality, it’s really just textbook peak-hour work that balances the always conflicting realms of obscurity and mass appeal. Preview, listen and download right HERE!

Almost a year ago, we featured two fine remixes from the dynamic duo of Yo Ev and Mikey Digits, aka Torro Torro — needless to say, we were impressed with their sound, and the direction that their production was taking. Fast-forward over ten months, countless gigs, and a whole slew of promising new production, it seems appropriate that we update you on what Torro Torro are up to, and how they are seemingly imposing their will on electronic music in Toronto and abroad.

Most recently, Torro Torro headlined last night’s party at one of the most essential electronic institutions of Queen West, namely Wrongbar, and several reliable sources have confirmed that these kids absolutely tore the roof off the place. Moreover, this entire year has been an active one for this Toronto-based tandem, having opened for the likes of Bird Peterson, B. Rich, DJ Sega, Mightyfools, and countless others. We were also able to catch up with Torro Torro in March at WMC, and they kindly provided us with a bunch of their new material, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Today we’re going to share two of the Torro Torro tunes that have been making the most noise over the past several months. Both of the remixes are adaptations of local production, making them especially relevant to us (Gooffee & Autoerotique), and both have a thrashing electro/house vibe. In fact, the remix for Autoerotique is often played out by Autoerotique themselves, the ultimate compliment. Suffice to say we will continue to have our eyes and ears locked to what Yo Ev and Mikey are up to, as they are clearly on the right path — you should do the same.

Autoerotique — Gladiator (Torro Torro Remix)

Gooffee — Flow (Torro Torro Remix)
