Yearning For Miami

March 1, 2011

Today is officially March 1st, meaning that March DJ charts are flying everywhere, and much more importantly, our jaunt to Miami is no more than twenty-three days in the future. Yes, aside from the fact that the usually collaborative forces of WMC & ULTRA have split forces (for the worse), we’re confident that late-March will provide us with a hectic seven days of music-related ruckus, regardless of the festival’s hashtag. We’re also going to step up our media coverage this year, providing you a steady stream of daily content, including: the odd live to air radio session, daily videos, more pictures, and of course, breaking the biggest tunes to the world, when they happen. And who knows, hopefully we can arrange for a special interview or two (currently in the works).

We land on Wednesday March 23rd, just in time to catch the tail end of the Recession Session Pool Party with Art Department, Dubfire, A-Trak & several others. From there, we mission to the recently announced Night Slugs Party being organized by Toronto’s own Embrace at Eve, formally known as the famous White Room. One of the best vibe venues in Miami will welcome Night Slugs label boss Bok Bok, as well as Girl Unit, Kingdom and more threads from the same cloth.

We know that Thursday afternoon will be the sun-soaked affair at the Surfcomber when we hit up the People Like Us pool party, featuring the likes of Seth Troxler and Loco Dice. Thursday evening will be consumed by HARD Miami, being held at arguably the best venue I’ve ever been to, in Grand Central — featuring names like Tiga, Brodinski, Mehdi & Diplo, just to name a few. Also that night, Simian Mobile Disco will be playing the Delicacies Party alongside Rory Phillips at Eve, which should make for a convenient late-night stop, before we descend into the depths of an early morning affair at Space, with Loco Dice and Marco Carola.

Friday it appears as though the main event on our docket will be the first segment of Sunday School: The Lost Weekend, which will feature two separate stages, both equally enticing — one with Boysnoize Records artists (ie. Boys Noize, Tiga, Djedjotronic, DIM), and the other with Minus Records artists (ie. Richie Hawtin, Magda, Marco Carola). After that, it’s off to Electric Pickle for the Crosstown Rebels Get Lost party, which will feature Konrad Black, Dan Ghenacia, Maceo Plex, Lee Foss and a very long list of other talented dudes.

Saturday afternoon and evening are still somewhat up in the air, with some big name parties still to be announced. We do have the comfort of knowing that the Trouble & Bass party, and Busy-P’s Let The Children Techno party, are both strong possibilities for the evening hours, but no one could ever predict how whacky the Saturday can end up being.

Sunday evening, Electric Pickle will be hosting the Hot Natured Miami party, which will feature the likes of Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Soul Clap, Art Department, Robert James and others. The big value-add will be the classic sets thrown down by legends MK, Scotty Deep and Craig Richards. This will be special.

Anything past Sunday we really haven’t given much thought to, but as we mentioned, this is all subject to change seeing as we are still eagerly anticipating the Sound Pellegrino Miami announcement, which Teki will be making in the coming days, as well as the Discobelle announcement. Saturday the 26th is bound to pack more than a couple surprises, and who knows, we might just end up on a stage in front of thousands again.

Enjoy one of the latest remixes from disco sensation Rory Phillips (who will be playing on Thursday the 24th with Simian Mobile Disco at Eve), to set that indescribable, feel-good, Miami mood.

Heavy Bass Champion

February 23, 2010

The track below will have a lot of people divided. You will either love it or hate it and that doesn’t mean that either feeling towards it will stay that way for very long. Off Trouble & Bass’ “Heavybass Champions of the World Vol I”, Doomsday Device has Drop the Lime going in a new direction. There are no vocals, there is no wobbling bass – only a jacking party tune that is so in tune with the kind of music that he likes to throw down in his sets. It’s been floating around for a while and we sat on it as we were a bit unsure what you’d think about it but we’ve decided to put decision up to you.

Drop the Lime is just one of the many producers that seems to be switching up their style a little as of late, which is just as well because our ears are always on high alert for something with a fresh sound regardless of who’s pumping it out. It still has a little bit of filth at the bottom end for the heavy bass lovers, but the main high pitched frequencies is what will either make you love this track or drop it from the playlist after your first listen. Here’s to artists branching out and to listeners doing the same. Try this one on for size and see how you feel about the new, bass-reduced sound.

Phat Cat

September 4, 2009

Mikix The Cat

Arguably one of the biggest August releases was the fifth installment from the Sound Pellegrino catologue (“WedouWedou / Give It Up EP”), an EP that showcased the very talented Parisian producer “Momma’s Boy”. The release was met with global acclaim, on a budding Institubes sub-label that we have been raving over for time.

Momma’s Boy’s sudden fame in the Western Hemisphere leaves the vast majority without any idea of this dude’s humble beginnings under the alias “Mikix The Cat”. Known as a breakdancing marvel in the mean streets of Paris, Mikix wisely decided to hang up the tap shoes, and spin records — instead of himself. Mikix The Cat (or Momma’s Boy) has become one of the most widely recognized and celebrated young Parisian producers to date, and has made it his calling to create heavy bass productions. With releases on Trouble & Bass, Fabric London, as well as the aforementioned Sound Pellegrino, you shouldn’t have a difficult time finding his high-quality stuff.

The track we have for you all today was a piece that Mikix The Cat featured on his own blog. Upon the first listen, we fell in love, and we highly recommend checking it out. Funny enough, the track’s called “Check Dis Out”, so by all means, do it up.

electroTO Presents Drop The Lime

The Headliner: electroTO Presents TRASH Feat. Drop The Lime, Sat. @ Augusta House

For the second consecutive week, us here at electroTO have focused our attention on throwing one of the dopest parties in the city. If you weren’t able to tear the roof off with us and Jokers of the Scene last weekend, you’re going to want to alter your decision making process and check out one of the craziest/hardest electro acts in existence, Drop The Lime. This week we are proud to announce the valuable support of Toronto electro-scene boss Cody LeKush, as well as our friends over at The Mansion. This means the place will be packed to the mo’fuckin rafters, so get there early for the cheap dranks. (Psst…keep your ear to the ground for some post-event madness)

The Opener: Azari & III, Violca, YPro, Mr. Charlton & DJ Cal, Fri. @ Mod Club

Our friends at FAK really know how to put together a world-class bill. This Friday at the Mod Club, they’re hosting their “Voyeur” party with a long list of local talent, clearly outlined above. The most notable act on the list is the Toronto-based duo Azari & III, who in my humble estimation are two of the most underrated cats in the scene. Their original productions are ridiculous, and their live sets known to be equally skillful. Moreover, with close to 6000 Facebook invites on the event page, we’d recommend you creep through the Mod Club doors early, and check out each of these fine disc jockeys from beginning to end.

The Opener: Blatta & Inesha, Sat. @ The Social

It pains us that two of our favorite Italian DJ’s are in town the same night as Drop The Lime (another Italian talent), but hey, that’s just the way it is. Quite simply, Blatta & Inesha will throw it down Saturday, and permanently induced deafness is not out of the question. Our friends at The Faktory are the brains behind this operation, and they have promised a couple nifty maneuvers for the after-party, which is set to take place at Studio 204 (Queen & Spadina). All I can say is, this is going to be a Saturday evening for the ages.

The Opener: Golden Gloves & Medley, Thurs. @ Strangelove

There is no better way to start your weekend than with electroTO favorites, Ben and Kevin, of the DJ tandem Golden Gloves. Their original productions have been well documented on this space, and their live acts have been well recorded on our live Twitter feed. Bottom line, these guys know how to dominate a dancefloor, no matter the occassion — The Jon’s weekly DLYF event seems like a match made in electronic heaven. Don’t sleep on your Thursday, head down to College and rock out with our homeboys.

See You Saturday,
