Perpetual Thoughts

April 15, 2011

We’ve long documented the well-deserved success of the Toronto-based, BNR super-stud, Rynecologist, both through his previous mixes, his unparalleled tunes, and his charitable deeds. We managed to catch up with him less than a week ago at the Brodinski show, and homeboy was as humble and jovial as ever — humble and jovial, with a crate full of exclusive heaters that merked the Queen West patrons that evening. Today his legacy continues with the third installation of his Still Thinking mixtape series. The tracklist is still pending, but that just makes the listening experience that much more rewarding, with a whole slew of treats in there from the BNR, and Turbo vaults. Grab this one, and support one of TO’s most promising electronic mavericks.

Cover Your Eyes

March 8, 2011

In celebration of the The Shoes album that dropped yesterday on Southern Fried (yes, we absolutely adore The Shoes), we thought it’d be more than appropriate to toss you the latest Gesaffelstein remix tearing its way through cyberspace — ironically a rendition of The Shoes’ tune Cover Your Eyes. It’s more of the same brilliant arrangement from France’s newest lord of techno / throwback rave, with spacey breaks, big bass, and alien stabs galore. Toss all that together with The Shoes vocals that we simply never get tired of, and you have an instant gem.

So enjoy this one, and be sure to cop the entire Shoes album, titled Crack My Bones, which features singles like Wastin Time and Stay The Same. Some really good music that’s suitable for settings beyond clubland — toss it in your car, and you’re good to go.

The Shoes – Cover Your Eyes (Gesaffelstein Remix)

Top Ten Labels of 2010

January 3, 2011

What’s maybe more interesting than the actual list below, is the notable omissions made for this year — well, one in particular. You will find that Sound Pellegrino, everyone’s (us included) super-label of 2009 has not been included on our 2010 docket. With a solid start to 2010, releasing Bart B More’s Romane EP, we thought SNP was off to another scorcher of a year, but it was a tragic fall from there. Far too much annoying gibberish by Teki Latex, too many soft spot tracks, and no where near the production prowess that was enlisted in ’09. It’s sad, but true. Ok, now, after having got that off our chests, we must mention that we love the way our 2010 label rankings shaped up, with some stunning up-and-comers, and some always stellar powerhouses. Enjoy.

Top Ten Labels of 2010:

01 | Turbo Recordings

Est: 1998
Headquarters: Montreal, Canada
# of 2010 Releases: 22
Notable Artists: Tiga, Sei A, Kebacid, Terence Fixmer, Gesaffeslstein, Azari & III, Boy 8 Bit
Website

Whether it’s industrial techno, banging techno, sappy disco, fancy electro or nu-acid, Turbo does it all. With the Sei A album, and EPs from the likes of Terence Fixmer, Gesaffeslstein, Azari & III, and Boy 8 Bit, our friends from Montreal seriously ran away with it this year. With looming LPs from Proxy and Azari & III, a repeat for 2011 looks more than probable.

02 | Made To Play

Est: 2005
Headquarters: Berlin, Germany
# of 2010 Releases: 14
Notable Artists: RTK, Renaissance Man, Jesse Rose, Riva Starr, Homework, Oliver $
Website

A massive campaign for Jesse Rose and the boys, with a classic album from Riva Starr, a pair of EPs from Renaissance Man, and EPs from the likes of Homework, Oliver $, and the boss himself, this was truly a year to remember for Made To Play. Add to that, the success of Play it Down, and the number two spot in our ranks is cemented.

03 | Get The Curse

Est: 2010
Headquarters: Paris, France
# of 2010 Releases: 5
Notable Artists: Clement Meyer, Photonz, Olibusta, Darabi, Sei A, Roman Fluegel
Website

This selection may raise a bunch of eyebrows, but we’re adamant that no one is making proper techno music like these boys from Paris. The entire braintrust from Get The Curse are on another dimension of deep, haunted techno production, and the quality rammed into their tastefully minute catalogue is the cherry on top.

04 | Hot Creations

Est: 2010
Headquarters: Los Angeles, California
# of 2010 Releases: 5
Notable Artists: Lee Foss, Jamie Jones, Robert James, Burnski, Robin Porter
Website

The funkiest, grooviest disco-house outfit on this list, with EPs by Lee Foss and Jamie Jones that were some of the strongest we heard all year long. Very happy to see that California is a stronghold for creative house music, with another label run by Mr. von Stroke not far away, in the bay-area.

05 | Youngunz

Est: 2009
Headquarters: Paris, France
# of 2010 Releases: 7
Notable Artists: French Fries, Manare, Bambounou, Alan Gay, Lazy Flow
Website

What a year for this youthful group of Frenchman. They practically took the industry by storm in early 2010 with unforgettable releases by French Fries and Manare, but eventually cooled with a borderline sexpose´ EP by Alan Gay. Regardless, a very promising future for these ringleaders of gangster house.

06 | Night Slugs

Est: 2010
Headquarters: London, England
# of 2010 Releases: 10
Notable Artists: L-Vis 1990, Mosca, Egyptrixx, Girl Unit, Kingdom, Velour, Jam City
Website

A label that embodies the vogue sound for the back-half of 2010. How to categorize it, we’ll never know. Throwing around cliches like UK Funky, UK Garage, Experimental, Dubstep — none of these resonate particularly well with us. Regardless, an incredible roster of talent, with a series of knock-out EPs.

07 | Crosstown Rebels

Est: 2003
Headquarters: London, England
# of 2010 Releases: 16
Notable Artists: Art Department, Soul Clap, Jamie Jones, Laurent Garnier, Lee Jones
Website

Vintage house music was reborn this year, and Crosstown Rebels lead the brigade. We all know how successful the release by Art Department was, but strong showings by Soul Clap and Jamie Jones as well, help make this decision a no-brainer. Will they hit the jack-pot with another Art Dept. release in 2011?

08 | Boysnoize Records

Est: 2005
Headquarters: Berlin, Germany
# of 2010 Releases: 17
Notable Artists: Boys Noize, Djedjotronic, Housemeister, Strip Steve, Rynecologist
Website

Boysnoize Recs is always an electro manufacturing powerhouse, and we were really happy with the mother-load of releases they dropped this year. Add to this, the success of BNR Traxe and some may be scratching their heads as to why BNR wasn’t top-5. Our answer, too much of anything is never a good thing; BNR needs to diversify in 2011.

09 | Ed Banger

Est: 2003
Headquarters: Paris, France
# of 2010 Releases: 15
Notable Artists: Carte Blanche, Mr. Flash, Cassius, Feadz, Mickey Moonlight, Breakbot
Website

A renaissance year for Pedro’s crew in France, after being snubbed off our list in 2009. Obviously there was no stopping Ed Banger this time around with EPs by Carte Blanch, Mr. Flash, and of course, Cassius. Hopefully they don’t make a habit of taking years off, and keep the tunes churning in 2011.

10 | Ghostly International

Est: 1999
Headquarters: Ann Arbor, Michigan
# of 2010 Releases: 29
Notable Artists: Gold Panda, Matthew Dear, Deastro, School of Seven Bells
Website

Home to some of the most bizarre, artsy-fartsy, experimental snob music around, Ghostly makes our list because they were the geniuses behind two of our top-10 albums for this past year. Indeed, Black City by Matthew Dear and Lucky Shiner by Gold Panda were both products of this Michigan-based label.

11 | Dirtybird

Est: 2005
Headquarters: San Francisco, United States
# of 2009 Releases: 17
Notable Artists: Claude Von Stroke, Justin Martin, Sascha Braemer, Julio Bashmore
Website

Perhaps the most solid contemperary house music label in the world. Dirtybird’s brand of San Francisco house deserves it’s own sub-genre at this point, because each release bring something innovative and fresh to the table. Taking chances on fresh artists like Julio Bashmore and Cajmere really paid off.

12 | Phantasy Sound

Est: 2007
Headquarters: London, England
# of 2010 Releases: 10
Notable Artists: Erol Alkan, Paul Chambers, Chilly Gonzales, Babe Terror
Website

Phantasy always operates in a very sneaky and subliminal way, compiling solid release after solid release, often going unnoticed the whole way. Luckily, anything run by Erol Alkan is going to wreak with quality, so there never is much of an issue when it comes to measuring their success.

13 | Deadfish Audio

Est: 2008
Headquarters: London, England
# of 2010 Releases: 10
Notable Artists: Mowgli, Camel, Tom Flynn, Zombie Disco Squad
Website

A bit of a drop-off for our Italian friends at Deadfish. Mowgli and Camel are keeping this outfit alive with their sturdy house and tech-house production. A little more variety and some fresh faces would have done them good. We saw glimpses in the Deadfish remix album, but we want to hear from some of those artists in EP form.

Top Ten EPs Of 2010

January 1, 2011

Our musical sympathies have gained a year of maturity, and the ever-changing landscape of popular dance music has shifted — both important factors that have weighed heavily on these EP selections. I’d like to think we were a bit more bold in our decision-making for the top EPs of this past year, as compared to our Top 10 EPs of 2009. Looking back at ’09, I almost feel like we were gung-ho on mass appeasement, ensuring we were aligned with the safe-haven of widespread appeal. Whereas for 2010, we were relentless slaves to our own musical passion, selecting releases that we, on a visceral level, were moved by. One thing that hasn’t changed is that our assessment looks at these releases both on a track-by-track level, and how the work coalesces as a whole. Enjoy.

Top Ten EPs of 2010:

01 | Coma Cat

Artist: Tensnake
Remixing Artists: N/A
Label: Defected Records / Permanent Vacation
Release Date: January 2010
Cat #: PERMAVAC049-1
Beatport

Any electronic dance music aficionado could have predicted that 2010 was disco’s year for the taking, but no one could have foreseen the impression that Tensnake’s Coma Cat EP left on music enthusiasts of all denominations. With arguably two of the top-20 tracks of the year, in Need Your Lovin and Coma Cat, there is little mystery as to why this release represents the absolute pinnacle of all dance music for 2010. Simply put, every time we hear those glass-orb disco stabs during the second breakdown of Coma Cat, time virtually stands still, reality becomes blurred, and our goosebumps are the only physical reminder that we’re still alive.

02 | Variations

Artist: Gesaffelstein
Remixing Artists: N/A
Label: Turbo
Release Date: November 2010
Cat #: TURBO093
Beatport

We were privileged enough to discover the unmistakable aura of Gesaffelstein back in August, when we ventured on an impromptu road-trip to Montreal to celebrate Turbo’s unveiling of Azari & III, alongside Mike Mind and Thomas von Party. The evening proceeded as any other, impressive yet ordinary, that is until Mike cued the track Selected Faces off of the Variations EP. My heart instantly crept into my throat, and I knew that this was something alien; some piece of bygone electronica from the Turbo vault that was destined to save us from vintage techno mediocrity. In one sentence, this release was techno’s black swan for 2010, crafted with surgical precision, innocently lured into the most menacing depths of rave, treading the silk thread that separates absurdity with genius.

03 | Without You / Vampire Nightclub

Artist: Art Department (Kenny Glasgow & Jonny White)
Remixing Artists: N/A
Label: Crosstown Rebels
Release Date: August 2010
Cat #: CRM064
Beatport

This one represents a resounding “win” for the city of Toronto, but honestly speaking, geographic sympathies played absolutely no part in our assessment of this two-track release from Art Department. Without You has been repeatedly billed as the track of 2010, resuscitating the haunted allure of house music from the 1990′s. Vampire Nightclub continues this trajectory, with the same melodic harmonies, unmistakable downtempo basslines, slow mode arpeggiators, and timely vocal assistance from the always eccentric Seth Troxler. Not to mention, their set at The Social during Nuite Blanche was one of the most impressive musical experiences of the year.

04 | Midnight Madness

Artist: Clement Meyer
Remixing Artists: Olibusta, Sian Finglas
Label: Get The Curse Music
Release Date: March 2010
Cat #: GTCM001
Beatport

Some will suggest that we’ve gone completely off the board for our number four selection, but we must warn you not to let a veil of ignorance sway your sentiments. Clement Meyer’s Midnight Madness EP was the inaugural release from Get The Curse Music, a Parisian label that was sown from the seeds of an incredible collection of podcasts and one of the most respected techno blogs on the web. This release stands out for its willingness to take chances, refusing direction, except those that lead to the obscure. A Bucket of Blood easily makes my top-10 track list for the year, and the Olibusta remix of Midnight Madness isn’t so far off either.

05 | U Got Me

Artist: Lee Foss
Remixing Artists: N/A
Label: Hot Creations
Release Date: August 2010
Cat #: HOTC003
Beatport

Throwback 90′s house was an undeniable recipe for success this past year, but I must add that only in the rarest of instances was it done properly. Lee Foss’ U Got Me EP was one of the shining examples of how soulful vocals, deep bass guitar riffs, pitched-down grooves and massive snares could still be tasteful, and incredible. A couple different tunes off this EP have solidified a lofty place in our overall track rankings, and you can expect the entire Hot Creations label (founded by Jamie Jones) to hold their own in our 2010 label rankings as well.

06 | Honey Comb / Brood Comb

Artist: Matt Walsh
Remixing Artists: Camel, Monsieur Monsieur, Sei A, Clement Meyer, Mike Mind, etc.
Label: Waxon Music / Seinan Music
Release Date: April 2010 / July 2010
Cat #: WOM003 / SEI006
Beatport / Beatport

Matt Walsh’s Honey Comb (released on Wax:On) and Brood Comb (released on Seinan) was billed as two separate releases, but given the fact that they contain remixes for the same song, we took the liberty to combine them. Featuring a King’s ransom of quality remixes by some of the world’s finest techno and house music producers, this double release is 2010′s prime example of “strength in numbers”. Whether it was Monsieur Monseiur’s big room rendition, Mike Mind‘s always reliable acid cut, or the obscure piece by Clement Meyer — there was something for everyone on this two part remix package, amounting to a great debut for Matt Walsh.

07 | Black Billionaires

Artist: Carte Blanche (Mehdi & Riton)
Remixing Artists: N/A
Label: Ed Banger / Because Music
Release Date: May 2010
Cat #: BEC5772672
Beatport

When we heard through the grapevine that DJ Mehdi and Henry Riton were collaborating on an EP for Ed Banger, the expectations were instantly sky-high. Bearing this in mind when we finally got our hands on the release, we were still blown away.  Gare Du Nord is the tune that resonates almost universally among EDM listeners; a track which takes us back to Miami’s Winter Music Conference 2010, when Brodinski, Mehdi and Busy P spun back-to-back-to-back at a venue formerly known as the White Room. What a party, what a song. Great to see Ed Banger back on the map with quality releases, and we look forward to more from this talented tandem.

08 | Calypso

Artist: Round Table Knights
Remixing Artists: N/A
Label: Made To Play
Release Date: February 2010
Cat #: MTP025
Beatport

This release changed the way the world now looks at the steel drum. Perhaps the most infectious melody of the year, Calypso was the track that effectively wrote the book on tropical house, and simultaneously closed the book on tropical house, as few were brave enough to emerge from this track’s shadow. The B-side on this two track collection, entitled Drop The Dow, is no throw-away either, albeit a much more traditional house cut. The massive success of Round Table Knights was a big win for Jesse Rose, and the entire camp at Made To Play, and with an LP set for an early 2011 release, RTK is set for another big year.

09 | Forever You

Artist: L-Vis 1990
Remixing Artists: N/A
Label: Night Slugs
Release Date: July 2010
Cat #: NS005
Beatport

Forever You is one of those rare instances where futurism and anachronism haphazardly collide to produce something truly brilliant, and refreshing. Last year it was Reckless For Your Love by our Toronto homies Azari & III, and this year it was L-Vis 1990′s turn, with this beautiful release on Night Slugs. The entire EP comes together beautifully with an essential dub mix, a very enticing reprise, as well as two b-side originals for good measure. The original mix also ranks quite highly in our top automotive cruising tunes for 2010.

10 | Vaporizer

Artist: Gingy & Bordello
Remixing Artists: Rynecologist
Label: This Is Music / More Music
Release Date: August 2010
Cat #: TIMORE004
Beatport

Vaporizer was one the most innovative hard-hitting techno tracks of the year, and it didn’t take long for the likes of Simian Mobile Disco, Dubfire & Brodinski to notice. We hate to use the term banger, but we love to use the word tasteful, so we’ll pair them together here and call it a day. Vaporizer is summed up with one of the most well-thought-out grooves we had heard all year, and a synth that balanced the attack, the resonance, and the release all seamlessly — amounting to a shriek that ultimately sounds like Satan tearing souls apart. Add to this a super-groovy remix by the lava-hot Rynecologist, and a catchy minimal B-side, entitled Partikal, it would have been silly to leave this release off our final rankings.

11 | Mommy/ Daddy

Artist: Populette
Remixing Artists: TBD, Harkin & Raney
Label: Throne Of Blood
Release Date: March 2010
Cat #: TOB004
Beatport

Is it techno? Is it acid? Is it disco? We’re not quite sure why we’re so enamored with this release by Populette, but you can certainly start with the infectious rave stabs in the Original mix of Daddy, moving on to the ice-cold acid bassline, eventually layered with a totally opportune conga loop. Ok, I’ve figured it out, we love this release because it literally amalgamates everything we know and appreciate about electronic music into two near-perfect original tracks. The two remixes aren’t much more than a bonus for us here, but we can honestly say that both Mommy and Daddy showcase Populette’s vice grip on good electronic music.

12 | Man From Earth Remixes

Artist: Jori Hulkkonen
Remixing Artists: Astronomer, Sei A, Jesper Dahlback, Matt Walsh, Alex Jones, Guy J
Label: Turbo
Release Date: March 2010
Cat #: TURBO079
Beatport

When this release first came out, I thought it was destined to be number one in our 2010 EP rankings. Obviously my infatuation cooled, but my undying love for each of these tunes lives on. The Astronomer remix of Man From Earth will go down as own of the most underrated techno tunes of 2010, presenting something so mysterious, yet so enjoyable. Oh yes, the Sei A remix, the Guy J remix, the Jesper Dahlback remix and the Matt Walsh/Alex Jones collabo on the EP aren’t too bad either. It’s really unfortunate that Turbo couldn’t get a half-decent line-up for this remix package. What a shame… Seriously though, it doesn’t doesn’t get much better than this for a bundle of techno remixes.

13 | Arma EP

Artist: French Fries
Remixing Artists: Bok Bok, Tomb Crew, BeatauCue
Label: Youngunz
Release Date: January 2010
Cat #:
Beatport

Granted that this one-time vogue sound is well past its expiry date, it would have certainly been unfair to leave this EP off our list entirely. Both Senta and Predador were influential in the same foreign vocal – big drum – tropical house vein as tunes like Calypso, and they were undeniable dance floor gems. The remixes on this EP are fun and enticing as well, enlisting a young and fresh group of talent. There is no mistaking that this was the coming out party for French label Youngunz.

The Dove

November 26, 2010

Tonight, Toronto welcomes the man who’s voice can lift things that muscles were simply not meant to. The man that fun never forgot. Montreal’s techno archangel — Tiga . He runs Turbo Recordings, and he is arguably the most well-seasoned DJ in the world, with an indelible library of music. Usually we make a much stronger attempt to conceal our bias in our posts, but today is not one of those days. Check the links below for some of the previous articles we have dedicated to this man’s music.

Sei It Ain’t So

November 16, 2010

We do a lot of music analysis here. Sadly, some of the tunes we fall in love with expire quicker than an unrefrigerated bag of milk in mid-July. It’s just the way it goes sometimes. The shelf life on the vast majority of electronic music is alarmingly short. Enter anomaly. The latest to come from our friends at Turbo Recordings will defy this trend, and probably go down as one of the most timeless LPs we’ve ever heard.

We’re refering to Sei A’s latest release, White Rainbow, a thirteen track voyage through everything from techno, to ambient, to garage, and back again. This Glaswegian sensation has managed to put together a nearly flawless techno album, no easy feat. We’ll leave it to label boss, Tiga, to solidify our sentiments, “the consistent innovation of his tracks. Two years on, and I still have never been disappointed by a track. White Rainbow for me is modern techno at its finest – a rare techno album that works in the clubs and at home. I just can’t wait till the anti-Glaswegian techno conspiracy is exposed and Sei A can take his rightful place in the pantheon of techno gods.”

The part that really makes this release special, is Sei A’s willingness to break down all genre barriers, presenting a type of musical diversity that is truly sparse in these digitally fueled circles. He easily skips from techno assault weapon in Flicker, to snake-charming Syriana-groove in Flylo, to spiritually feckless ambient in Body of Eyes. Go buy this album. Support undeniable musical genius.

Planet Turbo

September 28, 2010

“What we’re doing is like planting trees all over the world, but far more important.” – Tiga

Planet Turbo has transcended the notion of world-tour, it has gone beyond showcasing individual talent; moreover, it has served as a palpable reminder to all electronic music enthusiast that there is only room for one label in the top-drawer of our beloved genre. The purpose of this brief foray will be to catch you up on the recent going-ons down in Montreal, where the Turbo brain-trust are casually putting work before sleep, on a consistent basis.

Rewind back to April 29th, when Tiga and his goon-squad (which included the likes of Erol Alkan, Riton, Zombie Nation, Proxy & Thomas Von Party – no big deal, right?) stopped off in Rotterdam, Holland to kick off the first stop of their 2010 world tour. Needless to say, this event crippled the will of those in attendance, and sent some very meaningful shockwaves throughout the entire electronic aristocracy. Turbo was here to claim 2010 as their own, and from there, global metropolitan strongholds like Glasgow, London, Madrid, Sydney, Montreal, etc. were lined up like Jenga pieces in front of a wall of Marshall monitors (à la the Justice promo photo).

As you may, or may not know, Turbo was recently kind enough to release an entire EP showcasing some of the most well-received bombs of the Planet Turbo world tour. This can be purchased at the Turbo shop, available right HERE. There, you will also find some of the label’s latest releases including Azari & III’s Indigo EP, Boy 8-Bit’s Yard Birds EP, and the most recent, released today, Discosamurai’s Yes & No EP. In addition to these latest works, Turbo has provided you with three no-charge downloads via their Soundcloud account to prove to the consumer that they aren’t capitalist vampires (see below). Pay particular attention to the Deepgroove remix of Sei A, which could possibly be one of the best free tunes ever released.

Clouded Vision – Saturation

Chromeo – Rage (Riton Re Rub)

Sei A – Lazers (Deepgroove Remix)

In an effort to aggrandize the current Planet Turbo world tour, and shed light on the upcoming release of the latest Proxy EP later this month, Turbo Recordings is giving away one of the most stellar freebies in recent memory. Indeed, Proxy’s TURBO083 (or Vibrate EP) is set for digital release in just 11 days, and alongside the vaunted original, it features remixes by Sound of Stereo, Noob and The Bloody Beetroots. The last on this illustrious list is what Turbo is graciously dishing out on their Planet-Turbo homepage. Check it!

Cooking with Acid

May 21, 2010

Our love for all things Turbo has never been something we’ve attempted to hide here at electroTO. The fact is that they consistently put out some of the best releases in the league from some of the most talented producers in the league and never stray from their vision. This, and the fact that it’s run by Canadian boys Tiga and TVP make it really top notch year after year. Continuing the in trend of super star duos that The Vamp talked about last week, Turbo jumped on the band wagon so to speak with their own take in house collaboration of Jori Hulkkonen and Jesper Dahlback under the moniker Kebacid. In their latest, the Party Hat EP, Kebacid delivers exactly what it promises on the tin with three acid smashers titled Jack the Potato, Bandy Party and Journey of Life.

In fitting with the acid theme of the EP, the boys over at Turbo edited the short film Love & Theft by Andreas Hykade to the soundtrack of Jack The Potato (see above.) Listen to the whole EP at the Turbo website pretty cheap and get your hands on it before most become wise to how wonderful it is. While this may not float everyone’s boat, Kebacid is a really exciting concept to some people and we are most definitely looking forward to hearing what else the lads churn out. This, along with Brodinski’s Arnold Classics which you absolutely have to get a hold of if you have not done so already ranks in the top three releases of May. June is going to hard a hard time topping this.
