What’s Good Wednesday

After salivating over the Ultra Week events yesterday, we have to come back down to earth a little bit and outline this weekend’s EDM agenda for Toronto. We mean this with no disrespect, it’s just realistically hard to compare the two. Friday, Mod Club will host a homecoming of sorts when it welcomes JFK to the main-stage. Also, on Friday, Fabric London’s house music legend Evil Eddie Richards will be playing an under-the-radar party in the Dundas and Ossington area. Saturday night, Rico Tubbs will play The Social alongside Robb G, while another house music pillar will be in town when DJ Sneak brings his talents to Footwork. Also, as we do every Wednesday evening, be sure to check etoLIVE tonight at 10:30pm EST, where we will share the most influential tunes of the moment, and highlight some of the finest in local talent.

It’s been a crazy week here. With the elimination of many, many mediafire links, and a benevolent switch to high quality streaming applications, electroTO is now a proud ambassador of unrelenting record label support and artistic integrity. However, one thing that certainly has not changed, and will never change, is our weekly WGW segment, which highlights electronic music acts throughout the city. This weekend brings some very tantalizing acts to the forefront with names like Mark Knight, Bart B More, Rynecologist & Ramon Tapia all on deck. Also, an important heads up, Wrongbar is dishing rock n’ roll sets ’til past midnight on Saturday, so tread carefully before you pay cover. Not that there’s anything wrong with rock n’ roll, we’re just simply letting you know. Enjoy kids.

A very tantalizing string of headliners on deck for this weekend, with all of Toronto’s most influential EDM venues showcasing top-tier bookings. Resident Advisor’s golden boy, Kyle Hall, makes his Toronto debut at the very chic Galapagos Thursday at The Drake Underground — expect all sorts of deep grooves and nothing past 126 bpm. Friday evening is the people’s choice gala with everyone’s favorite ‘pa ‘pa Americano — errm — Yolanda Be Cool — lots of local radio-play foreshadows a fun-filled evening. Saturday is our pick of the litter, with House music’s cream of the crop Swiss duo, Round Table Knights at The Social for another dazzling edition of Faktory Saturday.  Other massive Saturday options include disco mastermind, The Magician (Wrongbar) and everyone’s favorite, Chromeo (Opera House).

And the docket is as full as ever, with a busy Friday-Saturday to help kick-off the new year. For all of you who endured the New Year’s nightmare at 99 Sudbury, your redemption song will go down at Sound Academy where Avicii and Glen Morrison are scheduled to play. What’s Good Wednesday!?

December 29, 2010

For the second week in a row, What’s Good Wednesday!? has been slightly abridged because of the Calendar’s quirky schedule this year. Not much we could do, but the plethora of options on New Years Eve should compensate for the reduced amount of listings. Frankly speaking, we’re not huge fans of NYE hype, but it’s undoubtedly an opportunity to gather with good friends and rejoice — although, aside from the countdown, we don’t see how this is much different than any other weekend. Regardless, it is what it is. NYE is here, like it or not. Either way, we would like to wish you all a very happy 2011, more specifically a great evening, and of course,  please drink & party responsibly.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

December 22, 2010

Sorry ravers, but silly Christmas has fallen square on your weekend. As a consequence, What’s Good Wednesday has suffered, and will only document holiday parties from December 23rd (Christmas-eve-eve) and December 26th (Boxing Day). The parties are, for the most part, all local affairs, with the usual talented suspects on the decks; however, boxing day, we get something special in our stocking. Spin Gallery (right above The Social) will welcome techno overlord Robag Wruhme, in a rare Canadian appearance — admission will be a tad pricey, but it will certainly be worth it to see this legend in action. Some of this man’s production has left a permanent dent on techno music, and his DJing will almost certainly follow suit on Sunday.

As the temperature continues to plummet, and we are subjected to the very bitter beginning of winter’s wrath, it’s comforting to know that Toronto’s most important electronic establishments are ideal refuges to overcome these frigid temperatures. Take for example, this Thursday, Cabin Five makes a great spot to check out some quality disco and funky house all night long with Nacho Lovers and some of their friends. Friday, The Social is your best bet, with Get Physical legend, Heidi, arriving in town ready to spread her minimal magic to the masses. Saturday, you really can’t go wrong, with electro options, techno options, and new wave UK garage all in the mix.

Some would suggest that the weekend actually starts this evening at Wrongbar with Skrillex rolling into town, but we didn’t want to stray from our sleek three-day WGW format. Regardless, that one is well sold-out by now anyway, so those who know, know.  Now, on to the gigs that fall within our jurisdiction, which include some really world-class bookings. Thursday brings a rarity to the table, with techno giant Marc Houle of Minus playing at Cobra. Mr. Houle just released a widely celebrated album, so this is a perfect opportunity to appreciate, and celebrate. Friday the lofty standard continues as The Drake will welcome one of the UKs brightest names in techno, Mr. Matt Walsh of Turbo Recording fame. Finally Saturday, why not finish up with a legend, as Mr. John Dahlback will work his magic at Footwork.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

November 24, 2010

Really excited about this upcoming weekend, with a whole ton of options, options, options, dispersed evenly throughout all three evenings. Some very cool Canadian content kicks it all off on Thursday night at The Drake with The Mole, alongside fellow canucks Nacho Lovers. Look for the dark vibes here, with the finest in murky house and daunting techno. Friday introduces a whole ‘nother level with the likes of Tiga at the Mod Club, alongside techno’s black sheep, Fuhgahzi Bordello. Other Friday options include Sydney Blu and Shapeshifters. Saturday goes just as hard with Felix Cartal, Poupon and Gingy at The Faktory’s Saturday. Also, Nocturne will host the start of the Bully parties with the likes of Bombaman, Brandon Sek and a bunch more.
