What’s Good Wednesday!?

November 17, 2010

The city is resurrected this weekend after a relatively quiet weekend seven days ago. In particular, we kick it all off with a very impressive Thursday line-up, including the king of nu disco, in Tensnake (at Wrongbar), as well as the king of minimal techno, in Richie Hawtin (at Footwork). The good news continues throughout your Friday and Saturday with names like Wolf + Lamb, Art Department, Jesse Rose, and local boys Poupon, Meati, Meech, Brandon Sek, Mark Meny. The time is right to check out some very talented disc jockeys.

With everyone and their mothers talking about the valiant return of the Crookers and the absolute shit-show set to go down at Sound Academy on Saturday, there are a number of notable acts that are flying under the radar. Take for example local kids Talal and Zoi (Dirtybird Records), two cousins who have absolutely mastered house music, playing on Thursday at Augusta House. Also, your Saturday evening includes sleepers such as Prince Language (The Social), as well as Azari & III (Wrongbar). Choose wisely my friends.

If the pumpkins pictured above were DJs, then that orchard would be Toronto. That’s right, a lot of notable bookings for the upcoming weekend with a pretty wide range of EDM genres, ensuring everyone has a reason to dress up and act foolishly. Jack Beats on the Friday evening will be an opportunity to witness some of the hardest hitting, wonk-wonk infused electro you can imagine. Then Saturday you have your choice of top quality bookings with Roska (Roska, Roska) at The Social, and the always impressive Boy 8-Bit at Wrongbar. Oh yes, and a couple legends in Carl Cox and Steve Lawler will also be in town on the Saturday, at you guessed it, Guvy. In any event, we’d like to wish all you ghouls and gals a very splendid weekend (awful, right? bingo).

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a free party this Thursday. I say this semi-sarcastically, seeing that there are more than eight Facebook events for this single jam, which by the way is taking place at 99 Sudbury. It will feature the likes of Classixx, LA Riots, Treasure Fingers, Azari & III, as well as our very own Meech, among others. It’s like a mini festival — so perhaps the overwhelming amount of hype is warranted. Skip to friday and DJ Zinc will be making a visit at Mod Club alongside local acts Zeds Dead. Saturday, we have a very special bday extravaganza featuring the likes of Rynecologist, Meech, Meati and Poupon. Also on Saturday, Italian techno gem Uto Karem (who we’ve made light of before) will be at Footwork. Then Sunday, anyone up for Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki? No? Awesome.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

September 15, 2010

The TIFF festivities continue in the city, and if you’ve managed to avoid the contagious poison of the celebrity DJ-set, we wholeheartedly applaud you. Otherwise, there have really been some memorable performances thus far, and that trend looks well-equipped to continue with a docket full of international talent this weekend. Thursday has a full slate of events, the most notable of which will feature Poupon continuing his momentum from yesterday’s performance with Riva Starr — he’s playing at Loki. Friday features another world class booking by Footwork, when they bring Tim Green into town, and Saturday features some massive names from both the new school and the old school, allowing for a wide array of options. Enjoy the final days of TIFF everyone.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

September 1, 2010

Pictured above is an early 20th century photo of the Labour Day parade in Toronto. Fast forward, oh about one-hundred years, and society has found a couple more enticing ways to celebrate this statutory holiday. This weekend is summer’s final hurrah. An opportunity to go hard, for three, four or maybe even five days in succession. Most notably, Labour Day weekend is synonymous with the Guvernment’s super event, Labour of Love. Although this year’s line-up leaves much to be desired in our eyes, it still presents an opportunity for thousands of electronic music enthusiasts to congregate around good music, and explore the subterranean realm of synthetic drugs.  One more item of note, an absolute sizzler of a booking at Mod Club on Friday, when Fake Blood attempts to rekindle his dominance of the Toronto club scene.

Without further adieu, we present to you the Toronto Pride Weekend Edition of What’s Good Wednesday!? … The most important repercussion of this festival, for all you raging bulls, is the fact that bars and clubs will have extended drinking license until 4am, making for some tantalizing late-night debauchery. That same evening, The Faktory will welcome the Faceless Management family, including Meech, Golden Gloves and Bordello. After an absolutely massive NxNE festival in our city, you’d think things would slow down somewhat, but that simply isn’t the case. Introducing to you, the G20 Summit/Earthquake edition of What’s Good Wednesday!? …where geological activity, far beneath the earth’s crust, isn’t the only rumblings in this town.
