Farewell Faktory

July 2, 2011

Tonight we bid farewell to one of the unquestioned staples of the Toronto electronic music scene, The Social’s Faktory Saturday; founded by booking visionaries Mike Scrimshaw & Ryan Burton. This weekly arrangement, which has gone steady for well over two years, rewrote the script on bringing conscious DJ/producers to the city, including folks like Untold, Soul Clap, Art Department, Damian Lazarus, Justin Martin, Douster, Teki Latex, Orgasmic, Roska, SBTRKT, Zombie Disco Squad, Camel, Round Table Knights, just to name a handful.

This evening, The Faktory will open its doors one more time to a number of influential local acts, including names like Brandon Sek, St. Mandrew, Nitin, and of course, our good friend Poupon. We’d encourage you to stop by, pay your respects, and rejoice in the wonderful memories that this nostalgic space has provided over the years. That being said, don’t dwell too long on The Social’s closing, as a completely new venue, tabbed The Hoxton, is set to open by summer’s end — ensuring that much of the same quality will continue to flow to our ears.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

February 16, 2011

I write this little blurb with an air of excitement looming, as the second test session of etoLIVE is set to pop off tonight on this very domain around 22:30hr (in, oh, about 45 mins or so). We took a good swing at the whole live radio thing last week (not without a hitch), and we’re confident that we can build upon that inaugural session, with a bundle of fresh tunes, and some hopefully intelligent commentary. During the show, we’ll also take time to talk about some of the events coming up in Toronto this weekend, including timely appearances by Harvard Bass, alongside Torro Torro, Meati, and Meech (Friday @ Mod Club), as well as Zombie Disco Squad, alongside Andrew Ross, and Poupon (Saturday @ The Social).

Almost one year ago, we held our very first inTORview segment, which featured the likes of electronic music’s shining prince, Louis Brodinski. The concept was catchy, an explicit play on the word interview, so as to insinuate that the artist was playing a gig in Toronto. Genius, if we do say so ourselves, but we must admit, these close encounters are too few and far between, so a conscious effort will be made by us to conduct more of the like. Today we’re very happy to announce that we caught up with one of the premier duos in the realm of house music, Made To Play’s DJ/producing tandem, Round Table Knights — who are coincidentally our headliner for this Saturday. We touch all topics branching from hip-hop music, to picking sides in Black Swan; you don’t wanna miss this.

Huge congratulations to you two upon the completion of the forthcoming album on Made To Play. The “Say What” Album Sampler gave us a taste of what to expect, but we’re curious about the tenuous process of creating a house music album. Was there a unique direction you guys chose to take with the album (a theme, maybe), or was it a bunch of pieces that eventually just came together?

The basic idea was to make a real album. Not just some dance tracks that can only be enjoyed in the club. We wanted to do something that works in the club, as well as at home, or in the car.  The album should be like one of our mixes, with all the different influences we have, but at the end it should be house music.

Your relationship with Made To Play has rendered three massive EPs, all of which have been very well-received by the house music community. Talk about your relationship with label-boss Jesse Rose, and how influential he’s been to your work, and evolution as DJs.

We have been fans of Made To Play since day one. The label has always had quite a big influence on us, so it was a big honour to hear that Jesse Rose liked our stuff so much. We first met Jesse when we opened for him in Switzerland, and that was also where he first heard Calypso. He loved the song, and one week later it was signed to Made To Play. That was a big step in our career.

There’s no denying that “Calypso” almost perfected the tropical/ethno house sound that was so popular over the past two years. In general, has that specific sound begun to expire, or will there always be ways to keep tribal/tropical/ethno house fresh and enticing?

Its like with every sound. Someone comes up with it, it gets popular and after a while you get sick of it because everybody’s doing the same thing. Its just normal, but there will always be elements that stay and help to improve future music. The interesting thing is gonna be who is taking which elements, playing with it until they come up with something new. The learning process in never over.

With darker strands of Techno music, more specifically Acid, and Deep House seeing such a renaissance as of late, do you guys see your sets going noticeably deeper, or do you make a point of keeping your sets fun and bouncy?

Our sets are always different. We never prepare. We usually arrive one hour before the set, check out the club and the crowd, then one of us starts with a song ,and from there on it’s back-to-back till the end of the set. But it’s true, we notice it ourselves that our sets getting deeper than maybe one year ago. That has to do with our interest in developing our music and our DJ sets. We wanna do new, fresh stuff. Improvement is the most important thing.

We’re always curious about what artists think of the contrast between European and North American club culture. You’ve been across the pond a couple times now, where do you see the main differences between the two?

The main thing is maybe that nights start earlier here in North America than in Europe. But then again Europe is very different too from country to country. Some people told us before we came here, that North Americans like it ‘harder’, that we couldn’t play as deep as we play in Europe, but that’s not true. We play the same kind of sets over here as we would play over there. It’s all about your attitude on stage and how you combine your songs.

We understand your early DJ career was rooted in serious turntablism, being big fans of the ITF and DMC. Hip-Hop remains a massive musical sector in North America. Do you guys keep up to date with the going-ons in rap culture?

Yes, we were big scratch nerds. We still have a lot of old DMC and ITF videos at home…haha. We still follow the hip-hop scene a little bit, but its not like it has a big influence in our music. But it can happen that we play some hip-hop tunes in our set. That’s always fun.

You guys just recently put together a remix for your countrymen, Mercury, which dropped on one of our favorite labels, GOMMA. We were so impressed by Mercury, we were wondering if you could give us the inside track on any other budding talents from your homeland?

Yes, check out Mercury they are amazing, and there will be more stuff coming soon from them! Also check out Jagged and if you like it a bit more tropical, check out Wildlife! I’m sure you already know Deetron and Dimlite.

RTK is part of a close-knit rat-pack so to speak, with the likes of Mowgli, Solo, Jesse Rose, Zombie Disco Squad, Renaissance Man, Camel and several others. Tell us about the dynamic when you’re together with those guys. Who’s the funniest, who parties hardest, etc. etc.?

We love those guys, and it’s so amazing to be part of this big family. It’s fun with everyone, but the best thing is when we’re all together, then it gets messy…haha.

Who are some of the DJ/Producers you guys look up to (past or present)? Who have you seen lately that you’ve been especially impressed by?

Homework are great! And one of our favourite labels at the moment is Suol. We are also big fans of James Blake, and Jamie XX.

Who is Reverend Beat-Man, from ‘Cut To The Top’?

Reverend Beat-Man is a voodoo Garage Rock Legend from Bern. Check his amazing label, Voodoo Rhythm, and if you have the chance, go check him out live. He’s an amazing performer!!

We understand you guys are somewhat big movie buffs, in regard to Black Swan — Mila Kunis, or Natalie Portman?

Natalie Portman!!! We love her!!!

Last question here gentlemen. What’s the best thing in Bern that we don’t know about?

In the summer you can swim in the river called Aare. This really is the best thing you can do! After this, go to Club Bonsoir ;-)

Thanks very much for doing this guys, and we look forward to catching up with you again at The Social on Saturday. We’re certain that the Faktory will have the “Really Good” sign positioned all over the place! Cheers!

Much like the photo above, this weekend’s compilation of talent is sky-high, off the charts, or just “really good”. Perhaps the two events that have the most intrigue for us, would be the appearance of Aeroplane (Vito) @ Wrongbar on the Thursday night, and Zombie Disco Squad @ The Social on the Saturday night. Both of these bookings provide some really special international talent (the first of which is nu disco, and the latter, some of the finest gangster house), that don’t come around every weekend. Friday, be sure to take an opportunity to support a wide selection of local-talent jams going down at familiar venues like Mod Club, Wrongbar, Andy Poolhall, and the list goes on. Enjoy!

Too Fast, Too Good

April 13, 2010

It’s no secret to anybody that Discobelle has things all figured out, not only do they dominate as a blog they’re also starting to gain some clout as a record label due to the brilliant recent release of the Too Fast EP from Swedish producers Jamtech Foundation. The release comes with a whole slew of remixes from one of our favorite producers Camel, British producer Julio Bashmore, Top Billin and the endlessly talented Zombie Disco Squad. Thankfully for us, the Discobelle crew gave out the ZDS remix for mass appreciation which really was the one that we wanted the most. Go to the link at the bottom to support the release on beatport or grab it on itunes and just about every other digital music store. Short and sweet today because this one really speaks for itself.

High Security House

February 26, 2010

We’re lead to believe that the UK duo known as Zombie Disco Squad has 2010 in the palm of their hands. After a breakout 2009, which saw the release of the Banging on Drums EP on Jesse Rose’s Made To Play label, the Congo Fire EP which dropped on Claude VonStroke’s DirtyBird label, as well as a whole slew of innovative remixes, that have seemingly guided the evolution of this reborn minimal sound –  it becomes clear, that 2010 is ZDS’s for the taking.

They’ve kicked off the year in convincing style, with yet another one of their brilliant remixes. This one was released in late January, under the HFN record label based out of Hamburg, Germany. The remix features an original by a Denmark Indie-Dance soloist, by the name of Kasper Bjorke. ZDS extracts the perfect vocal, layers a hypnotic piano riff, adds the ideal 808 kick, and finishes off with the most relevant claps, bongos and shouts under the sun. Here is the Zombie Disco Squad Remix of Alcatraz.

Uffie’s Comeback

December 27, 2009

Uffie

Uffie is Ed Banger’s resident female rapper/superstar/supermodel who experienced a huge surge in popularity right around the same time that Justice did back in 2007. To those of you who don’t know, Uffie is where Ke$sha (the one on the radio now) got her style from.

Uffie is back and set to release in 2010 and this one of the first tunes off the up and coming album. MCs can kiss is a spunky little tune that got the royal remix treatment from Zombie Disco Squad. ZDS, like any other SNP and Made to Play artist this year, can really have their way with a track and they most definitely have done so this time. While the lyrics don’t really do it for me and seem a bit slower, it rounds out to be a good track and is more than enough to get people excited for the productions that will be on the album. Producers include Oizo, Sebastien and other notable members of Busy P’s label so keep your eyes peeled for that and enjoy this one in the mean time.

Made To Play

December 8, 2009

Made To Play Squad

Here at electroTO, we have a tendency to fall in love with record labels at any given time. We give no warning, it kinda just happens — true love. The latest victim of our amorous electronic passion is a Berlin-based label known as “Made To Play”. These guys have just recently begun releasing digitals, and they’ve wasted no time shocking the world of house music.

The cats involved include label-boss Jesse Rose, alongside a star-studded cast with names such as Riva Starr, Idiotproof, Oliver $, Claude VonStroke, Zombie Disco Squad, and Jan Driver. The label explains that they strive to push the boundaries of house music in an attempt to “keep proper house music alive”.

The track we have today comes from the latest Made To Play release (MTPD004), and is an absolute scorcher by Mr. Oliver $ (pronounced Oliver Dollar). This raging red-head, pictured third from the left in the above photo, has been cranking out some of the most ridiculous and innovative tech tracks in modern memory. The original cut of  “You Got It!” bumps like mad, with so many intricate sounds and some numbing bass, the future of house music is on display for all to see.

What’s Good Wednesday!?

September 30, 2009

I Love Annie

The Headliner: Annie Mac — Thurs. @ The Social

This Thursday, Toronto will welcome Annie Mac, the widely recognized host of a number of shows on BBC’s Radio 1. Her most notable show,  Annie Mac’s Mash Up,  “is renowned for playing an eclectic mix of new musical genres such as electro, dubstep, dnb, hip-hop, and disco.” In addition to her on-air accolades, Annie Mac has a reputation for throwing it down live. This will be crazy.

The Opener: Laidback Luke — Fri. @ Mod Club

With simply too many top-notch productions to mention, it is sufficient to say that this Friday Toronto will host one of the world’s top electro-house acts, Laidback Luke. His resume speaks for itself, and regardless of the fact that he was in town less than a year ago, you’d be silly to sleep on this one.

The Opener: Zombie Disco Squad — Sat. @ The Drake Underground

The weekend’s super-sleeper involves the Dirty Bird, Made to Play, and Sound Pellegrino breakthrough DJ/producers, Zombie Disco Squad. These guys are popping up all over the place, and that is music to our ears, as there is no denying the quality of their productions and live sets. Take advantage of the rare opportunity to check these guys in North America.

The Opener: Tommie Sunshine & Felix Cartal — Sat. @ London Music Hall

If it’s a roadtrip that you fiend, then you might as well make the two hour trek down to London, Ontario and check out the London Music Festival’s tent party.  It will be a star-studded affair with both Tommie Sunshine and Mr. Felix Cartal on the decks. Definitely worth a nauseating drive West on the 401 highway.

The Closer: Martyn — Sun. @ Wrongbar

“The man the dubstep scene has come to know simply as Martyn has been a drum & bass DJ in his native Holland for more than a decade (he even recently collaborated with Mancunian D&B king Marcus Intalex). Deykers grew up in Eindhoven, but eventually settled in Rotterdam (his record label, 3024, is named after his old zip code there), and his fingerprints are all over the Red Zone D&B club nights that were held throughout the country.” (Thanks xlr8r.com) Be sure to check out the city’s solution for dubstep, Wrongbar Sunday.
